The original German movie that "The Sound of Music" was based on. The story of Maria Van Trapp and her husband and children in Austria at the start of WWII. The American actress, Mary Martin, happened to see the German version and loved it. She went to Rodgers and Hammerstein and told them they needed to do an updated American version.
