Dieffenbachia rescue by propagation and some care tips!

Pardon me for not knowing the exact ID for the dieffenbachia in this video lol. But it was a big plant that rotted at the base, so I had to rescue it by… propagating it of course. In this video I share some care tips, document my process, including some mistakes in there so you learn what NOT to do when propagating these. As usual, there’s satisfying updates at the end of the video to show you some of the baby leaves!

I love Dieffenbachia, this particular one gets really big. They love moisture and I give all of mine direct morning sunlight daily and they love it. They’ll get stretchy and leggy in low light. Only thing I don’t like about them is that they get really wide and can take up so much space. They also outgrow their pots really fast here in the tropics.

Thank you for your video. I am a new plant parent/steward. My Diffenbachia was not looking so hot and just went stagnant after a year, no growth. With one leaf yellowing here and there. I'd take it off. Wait...then one day a new leaf came in but it stayed curled for literally 4-5 months and a yellowing leaf happened. In desperation I took it out of its pot and put it in water like I would when I propagate my monsteras and put it in a new window with no direct light. The leaf curled open within a few days. It is literally thriving in water and new roots are bountiful. I live here in Los Angeles. Its been in water for almost a year. No real growth so I will have to figure out a way to get it to thrive more. Its spring now so I will re-pot her and see if she can grow more fluffy and thrive. Just wanted to share. Happy planting xoxo -Yaya

This kind of Diffenbachia is particularly like saturated soil, in my care. They grow like a giant in a bright indirect light. But compared to my indoor one, the growth of the stem is clearly different. When it's indoor, and got a lot darker light, the stem stay thin and leggy. When it's getting direct light the leaves may burned and the color starts to fading. But somehow strong and woodier stem. Diffenbachia really give off the vibe when it's already big like that 👍

I do this (add the substrate little by little) with my anthurium props and new seedlings that are in the wet greenhouse but i always let at least 3 nodes/leaves uncoverd, I use cymbidium pots with lots of side holes and very draining substrate (more aerated than the standard aroid substrate I use outside the wet greenhouse). So far, 100% success with all props and seedling "fattening". veitchii, magnificum, crystallinum, warocq, metallicum, recavum, corrugatum have all developed very well using this method, and considerable larger amount of soil roots than the ones that just stay with the aerial roots like.. AERIALS lol and I think it holds true for any vertically growing aroid.

I trashed my dieffenbachias over & over again. Even had a few in those tiny vertical garden pots til they outgrow the pots. They just didn't die. LoL. I also propageted mine without knowing about the grow nodes, though mine all grew. Perhaps since I didn't water them as often. lmaooo... From about 10 plants I chucked 9 down the bin since they got so big and look rather leggy (tall & skinny with broad leaves at the top side). Only keep one which has a neony kind of leaf patterns. Great vid!

So funny, I've propagated my Dieffenbachia many times, always without gloves and have touched the sap but it never hurt or caused any irritation. I once propagated a piece of stem straight into the soil and it grew 3 different stems beside it but nothing ever grew from the main stem I cut itself. Super weird and it took so long that I thought I had killed it and almost threw it away!

I think it would be better if after you put on the rooting hormone, that you make a hole in the soil, set the cutting into it & water it in. When you just push the cutting into the soil, you are rubbing the powder off.

Obviously, the higher the humidity level, allows you to play with smaller cuttings (In dry weather it is not viable to place them directly in substrate). Curiously, what is a disadvantage in a humid climate (a larger stem means a greater tendency to rot), is an advantage in a dry climate (a larger stem allows a balance between water lost through evaporation and the level of growth). Interesting: if you plant the cutting directly in soil, it is better to plant it is better just to leave 2 leaves maximum. I understand that the higher the stress level, the more the number of leaves must be reduced. For example, in water it can perfectly maintain 4 leaves...🤔
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 10 месяцев назад
Yes the leaf to node ratio is important. In water propagation it can absorb more water to support more leaves. But in soil propagation 1-2 leaf is the optimal 😀

@onlyplants
@onlyplants 9 месяцев назад
Only the top can be rooted into water. The middle you can follow my method of chopping single nodes to make more plants to give your loved ones. Leave maybe 1 meter at the bottom of bare stem in pot. It should spit out 2-3 new vines from there. Water it a lot less since it has no leaves. Also wear gloves and glasses, their sap is very very painful to the touch.

What kind of soil do you use mine are so thin

I use general potting mix on these. Do fertilizer them and give good light. They should thicken over time. Some varieties of them have thinner stems and appeal than others
