Diego was so touched by the reception from the Spurs fans that he claimed at the end of this interview (not translated very well by Ardiles) that he they made him feel like he was a member of the squad kicking the ball around on a Sunday afternoon for them. Diego continues to be a Spurs
Yeah but spurs fans are the ONLY english club fans that can get a poster of a prime 80s maradona in they're strip on the field at white hart lane-& it's NOT a photoshopped fantasy, it's real, now run along
I've just read the sad news of his death. The man had no peers. It was one of the highlights of my life to have seen him play for Tottenham in this match.
He was so good it looked like he was just taking the piss out of World class players. As an Englishman and England fan I have total respect for his skills. Yes goal 1 in that World Cup match was the worst example of refereeing in a World Cup ever but goal 2, omg. Total respect for a great, probably one of the greatest ever, footballers. RIP.
You should forgive him for that goal. Before he made it the English player beat him in face with elbow. And called him simulator. Maradona was very angry. That English player made Maradona score that goal by hand.
I was there and remember well that fantastic bicycle kick from the corner. I've never seen anything like Maradona. You felt he could do anything. Brady played well, Hoddle was excellent. But Maradona was from another planet. The whole game is also on this site.
I was there to still have the programme, thats how i remember the game to just as you said ,even though they were on the same team it seemed like a football dual between maradona and hoddle as to who could do the longest pass best free kick most crazy skill
@@keithmaxine534 I agree. Hoddle dictated the play, even from deep esp in the 1st half. His sublime ball control, vision, passing range coming from both of his feet were delighful to watch. He was the real number 10 playmaker in this match.
Both played in that epic quarterfinal a month or so later. I’ve watched it back in full now. Maradona controlled the whole match from start to finish. Hoddle played second fiddle to Maradona when it mattered most.
@@jagjitsinghmanku2283 I also remember a young Chris Waddle trying all kind of passes that didn't work out. But you could see he might one day come good. He did!
Wow, omg Diegoollllll, Arsenal fan here 😁 Diegito, El mejor, El mejor de todos los tiempos! Greatest there's ever been! What a player, what a character! El Pibe de Oro or The Golden Boy for a reason! And he chose party over football! (same with Ronaldinho)! One can only try to imagine what he would have done, had he chosen career over partying!
I never saw him play live but became aware of him back in 1978 when I was 7 years old through an oversize football magazine from South America. I can't recall the name, wish I still had it but I looked at it so much that the pages were coming off. After 1980, I enjoyed Maradona's legendary career watching his matches.
El mejor de la historia de la MULTIVERSA! #D10S 💙🇦🇷🔥🔥 El CAPITAN Único Diego Armando Maradona! Una raza extraterrestre 👽👽 Nobody comes even remotely close to this magician! The greatest to ever play the game! Multiverse on his own, by a long mile!
As a Spurs fan & an Argie (incidentally both my favourtie Euro teams were playing in this game Spurs & Inter) it gives me goosbumps to see Diego pull on the glorious white kit and to wonder what it might have been like to see he and Hoddle in their prime and an ageing Oz with Waddle and Gary Mabbutt gracing the pitch together.
Just a glimpse of his magic! What he was doing in traing tho, people and teammates say it was unparalleled, impossible! Every time New thing! In training he was the true Duegolll, imagine that! El CAPITAN Único Diego Armando Maradona, una raza extraterrestre 😍😍💙💙🚀🚀 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w21dkqtBwXk.html
One thing I admire about most English football fans is that they recognise quality when they see it and they give credit where and when credit is due, regardless of whether they're supposed to "hate" the player or not - they are purists, true football lovers. In this case, despite the fact that Maradona pierced their hearts only months after this match, many English fans continue to hail him as the greatest.
He came here to Toronto around 95 to play a friendly with bis brother!! It was a puny municipal stadium with no security anywhere. No partition from field and stands . Sat front row behind net. Crazy times here
Another time AC Milan showed up with Van Bastien Gullit etc. Peak team of that era. Inheard that they were having a practice day before match and i went down with younger brother to try to watch etc. Well....we were able to just walk in onto the field from street level and kick a couple balls with them🤣🤣🤣. I vividly remember Arigo Sacchi thinking wtf is going on here
He shows up at your club knowing you would appreciate the worlds greatest player wearing your beloved shirt, even if its for 1 game, he loved the game, Maradona
1:39-1:47.. it's a master display of two-footed skillful player. Inter's number 11 player was desperately trying to stop Hoddle, but the Spur's man managed to escape. That was one of my favorite Hoddle's play in tight space.
I am a liverpool supporter. But I have to say....maradona looks great in a spurs shirt... Can only imagine what it would have been like, if he had played for spurs?!!
Terribles jugadores Waddle y Hoddle. La seleccion inglesa del 90 era un equipazo. Waddle and Hoddle were incredible. England had a fantastic team in Italy90' and it was a really pitty to not have made it to the finals. They really deserved it.
@@madmax5144 Yes i agree, it was a shame. England actually had a good team in '86 too, it's just they came up against Maradona. Arguably the '90 England team were better....
I never knew this. And in the same year I was born too! I would loved to have been there and seen Maradona don the Spurs shirt. The greatest player ever, and he was upfront alongside Hoddle!! COYS
Cant believe this is up here! First football match i ever went to. I had the same clip on VHS for years - an insert on saint and greavsie I think. This was MAy 86 litterally a month before the hand of god so funny to hear his response to Question at the end! You've made my day thanks for posting.
I posted this video a few years ago now as I had it on VHS, was really happy I did having been there at the game myself. Now it's emotional for different reasons of course (especially as it was actually my birthday when he died) but happy people are getting to still see it. I had it on good authority (from Ossie himself) that Maradona nearly signed for Tottenham on three different occasions. But we shall have to make do with the one appearance! RIP Diego (or Dios as he's known), the greatest player of all time. COYS.
I might have to pick you up there on the Queen bit?! What I will say is having been there for the game, it was one of the great nights at White Hart Lane.
I was at this game as a kid standing on the terraces and it really was packed. What I remember most was although Maradonna was superb with flicks, tricks and sublime skill , so was Hoddle, and they linked up.so well. It was if the shackles had come off Hoddle and he could truly express himself. If he was playing in todays era when players get so much more protection and most pitches are like bowling greens he would be considered one of the world's truly great players.
It was not showboating either. If you look at some of his highlights for Napoli in Serie A he was trying overhead kicks/flicks from crossing positions to catch defenders out quite regularly. It worked a few times as well !!
Wow. Yet, In Maradona's biography, he said They (Argentina world cup 86 side) were most fearful of Peter Beardsley than anyone else in the England squad prior to the epic showdown in the Azteca Stadium in June 1986.
Personally my proudest moment being Tottenham , shame we never paid/or he accepted the £10mill' for the signature. Shame as under Ossie may of done him good yet we will never know, R.i.P ~ Q.E.P.D
Hoddle was a true talent- more 2 footed and a better striker of a ball than Bobby Charlton- however one big problem, he lacked Charlton and Gazza's engine and acceleration.
Who doesn't love Ossie Ardiles? I'm a Leeds fan, but even I can put aside my aversion to Spurs for that bloke. I doubt this would have gone down so well after the "Hand Of God" incident though.
Glenn Hoddle gave his number 10 to Maradona in this match, but still played as the real number 10 playmaker. Imo, this was one of the finest performances of him.
Hoddle shined in that game and I remember the after match conference in which Maradona asked Ardiles why England had been hiding Hoddle and Ardiles said they don’t like skilful players in this country. So true and you can see by this video how one world-class player compliments another.. Hoddle was so wasted in England But revered around the world. England’s preoccupation with work rate and trench tackling in that era cost us a once in a generation talent.
I have seen the full match on youtube. It's apparent that Maradona acknowledged Hoddle's ability as a playmaker, as he never hesitated to pass the ball to Hoddle to build up play. Even at one moment in 2nd half, in freekick situation, he just did short pass to Hoddle who then striked on target. They also tried to do combo whenever possible.
Imagine if Hoddle had a chance to play for Napoli, instead of AS Monaco in 1987 : Hoddle, Maradona and Antonio Careca in the same team would have been awesome.
