5 KW diesel heater running off an 18 amp hour battery. I ran the heater at the low setting. on a fully charged 18 amp hour battery Bank composed of two 12 volt 9 amp hour batteries ran in parallel. I was surprised with the outcome.

Very interesting idea. John McK 41, RU-vid's author of a 20-video in-depth tutorial on these heaters, recommends a larger diameter of exhaust pipe if extending the one already on the heater, to avoid back pressure on the system. Hope it works out for you!

Thanks for the running exaust through the output idea. I was 11 when we landed on the moon and became, and still is, an Apollo buff. I think Ive seen every documentary on the Saturn V rocket. Because weight was such an issue the engineers had to come up with some very ingenious solutions for certain situations. Your idea reminded me of the way the NASA engineers designed the F1 engine. Obviously they didn't have the luxury of adding a cooling system. What they did was put piping all around the nozzle and pumped the fuel through the piping on its way to the burn chamber. The fuel cooled the engine as this beast was burning something like a ton of fuel every second. I believe they also used some of the exaust heat for some things that I can't remember. I haven't installed my heater yet but your video lit a very bright light in my head!

Great info. Very clear. Pity about the farinheight figures. Imagine an Altimeter that read sea level as being 45 somethings? Ya would need a pen and paper on a parachute jump)))) Zero means 0 means freezing. Zero altitude means ground starts here. End of the road means zero road left ie; a wall etc. I am glad you were not telling me pipe length in Hands or Furlongs)) I have one of these ordered. It set me back euro 150. Which is quite a few Shillings))))

Yeah I wouldn't use cranking batteries. Probably better off with the sla batteries or a deep cycle. Lifepo4 batteries are getting cheaper and are a good option as well as you can use the entire capacity instead of half like lead acid. Just have to make sure the bms is capable of 10a continuous for when the glow plug is on

Get a larger pipe to run your exhust pipe through and pack it with sand to extend the heat time cycle longer. Research thermal sand heat battery

Run the exhaust thru a old steam radiator, then run it outside, two heat sources from it, hot air and radiant heat!

Just curious, maybe I’m missed the mention but when the battery reaches a certain voltage, is the system not designed to automatically shut itself down?

Hi James, just subscribed to your chanel, I like what you are doing. I watched a video yesterday where a guy uses a house radiator that he connected the exhaust to and through it from bottom left in to top right out and then through the wall to his outside muffler. The volume on the video was impossible for me to hear what he was saying (tinitus didn't help either) and I can find the link for you if you wish it, but I wondered about back pressure on the system doing it his way? My heater arrives any day now 'hopefully' so I was thinking of doing similar to you or perhaps him, as I have some spare radiators. I would love to hear your thoughts on this, as a newby lol. Keep em coming friend!

Hey Gordon, thanks for watching the video. I too would be concerned with back pressure also leaks in these connections. I myself would not attempt it because I don't know welding and special fittings would most likely have to be made. But any attempt to recover some of that lost heat done safely there's a good attempt. Also thank you for your subscription in the comment as well.

@@jamesgilbert1013 Hi James, I agree with you about leaks and back pressure being an issue. I will be careful for sure. If I come up with any other ideas I will let you know. Meanwhile, I will be watching you lol. 'warm' even 'warmer' regards!

I've had one of these heaters for two years . I started out with using a new car battery, I've had it for two years . still using it. I will till it's dead, or doesn't work anymore. but I still get 6 hours running on setting 2 to three. I just used it last week , the heater still works fine. I ran mine down to 8 volts then the heater showed a code an wouldn't start up an run so from my findings .. the heater will not run whith 8 volts. but the car battery did run my heater till it dropped to 8 volts. not good for the battery .. once I charged the battery reset the heater it was fine. But 6 hours of use from a fully charged car battery. I don't recommend this but it happens . That was a 2 year old car battery from Walmart. Hope this may help someone.

Hi Bruce, thanks for watching the video and thank you for your comment. The comment will be very informative to viewers who take the time to read the comment and it should be helpful. I hope to do a video regarding batteries, and what the best battery is to use for these heaters. I just uploaded a new video on using a PSU to operate diesel heaters. Maybe you'd be interested in watching that video. Also if you have a little time can you let me know how many cold cranking amps at battery is that you have I would be grateful. Thank you

A fully charged lead acid battery, allowed to settle down after charging is 12.5 volts. So your 13 + volts is not applicable.
@darcy3245
@darcy3245 Год назад
No sir! Depending wether it's gel or not, 13.1 is fully applicable and maintained during use with proper usage. Gel batteries being more durable in cold weather are sustainable at 12.2 all day everyday but, BUT...not using gel will be way better when depending on holding a longer, higher charge!

@@darcy3245 Thats why i said Lead Acid.. I have No expierance with Gel.
@4kays160
@4kays160 Год назад
Lead acid charges at 14.4 and float charges at 13.8.. 13.3 is fully charged ... 12.5 is a completely dead 12v battery, 12.2 and your damaging the battery... you have no idea what your talking about, this applies to lead acid and agm gel within 0.2v of each other..
@stevecarlisle3323
@stevecarlisle3323 Год назад
@@4kays160 so your saying after a typical lead acid battery has been charged, and you leave it for a day, and it levels off at 12.5 its DEAD. That 12.5 volt battery has always started my equipment for the last 50 years.
@4kays160
@4kays160 Год назад
@@stevecarlisle3323 yep, your battery is half dead, it should level at 12.8 minimum upto 13.. lets say your battery was 1200wh , now its only 600wh. Half the plates in your battery have dissolved from electrolysis, and remember lead batteries only have half the available power of there max charge before you damage them, so of the 600wh your battery has left only 300wh are usable.. yeah your battery has worked fine for 50yrs but you only have a quarter of the battery you bought new...

you should be getting a lot more than that if your running it on low setting, like about 4 times longer, when there running on low it should be round the 0.35w range
