I am pretty sure that engine is a F3L 812. I have the same engine as a 4 cylinder in my tractor. Here in Germany they are a dime a dozen and every farmer knows how to fix them. Parts are very cheap. You should definedly get the glowplugs working, in cold weather they will not start without them. And also, you can get the cooling shrowd out without taking the injector lines off, its tight but it works. Looking forward to seeing that old thing run. They quit making the 812 series in 1969 so its propably a mid 60s machine.

It's not f3l 812 but rather f3l 913 or 912, only difference is in cylinder diameter, but is wary small difference
@93holzkopf1412
@93holzkopf1412 2 года назад
@@MechanicB123 912 and 913 are direct injected. This engine has glowplugs, so more likely an 812 which has indirect injection.

I thought I had a problem buying too much junk. I bought a South Bend lathe in 2015 and it still isn’t running. Do yourself a favor and stop buying so much junk! It seems like it would help your channel to do a few multi-part series where you take one machine and take us through several processes on one machine. Basically what you’re doing now, but not so much clapped metal. The loader(don’t get me started…), the dump truck, the heavy trailer, the crane, the whacked out church building (OK, I miss the church and I really want to see you work on that some more.)! I feel heavily invested in this channel all of a sudden.🤪

These Deutz engines are really but REALLY bullet proof. I work here with the same engine on our Deutz D4506 tractor. Our tractor has not recieved new oil, oil filter or diesel filter or any filters for atleast 15 years. It still runs like a clock even without any service on it after all these years. The tractor is made in 1972. I love them. always start. Never let us down. Has no heater for the diesel so you can't preheath. It is direct injected. you have a reliable engine there.

Big Moe's in San Antonio Texas is THE place to go with troublesome starters. Of late, I always seem to find myself working on projects that need antiquated motors diagnosed, repaired, or rebuilt. I took an early winch motor in to them to be diagnosed and rebuilt. When it was all over with, I had a motor that was rebuilt from tip to tail and they didn't even know what kind of motor it was (and we STILL don't). Their workmanship is second to none. Prices are very reasonable.

Matt, you probably know this, when you pour the floor for your shop, don't let them use the old concrete cure, go to a industrial dealer and get a industrial dealer. Put it on as soon as the concrete is cured. You can keep it clear or add a color later. I would suggest a light tan, broom sweeps easy and also it is easy to wash down. From experience, my 2 cents. I finished all the walls with white roof metal 8 ft high. All the electrical outlets were 4 plex. I also put an exhaust fan in the top of the roof, big one will take smoke out in 5 minutes. Have fun.

I have a soft spot for Deutz engines. Spent 3 1/2 years working on forklifts, majority of our fleet were Baker diesels with Deutz motors. We had 70+ forklifts almost 50 Bakers. Most hours on a motor without an upper overhaul was 32,000, had pump problems, replaced top end on general principal. Most ran about 18,000 hours average on top end. Bottom end no problem, keep an eye on wrist pin bushings after a couple of top ends. Longest I saw one run was nearly 60,000 hours, if I remember right 56,000, was running well, bottom end had never been touched. Your motor is a glow plug motor, use them, they don't like cold. Old 7103300 used to get parked in a colder spot and I have had to get it fired up for the week many times, use the glow plugs, get some smoke, wait for heat to transfer and it would fire up. You have the later lift pump, earlier ones had lever. Setting valves on Deutz motors is kinda easy, set for zero lash at lowest temperature you want to start it at, lash grows as it heats up. One last bit. Deutz motors are easy to start when it is cold. A space heater blowing over the cooling fins warms it right up.

Matt, I have a Deutz 2011 diesel engine in my skid steer. Mine is an oil cooled three cylinder. Most of these motors have either a glow plug or a glow element (element is a single plug that goes in the intake manifold or air box before maniford) Be sure not to use ether if glow plugs are operating as you can blow things up. I have seen guys using a propane torch directly into the intake (like the glow element) and will make things fire right up. I also agree that if you are not seeing fuel or smoke while cranking, that is the problem. Matt, most important is to check the timing belt, yes, belt. Pretty easy to replace and not too expensive. It is an interference engine so it will bend push rods or more. Keep up the great work and videos, you rock!

On starter theory, the usual problem is that they are full of coils of wire that are insulated by very thin shellac, which burns off easily whenever they are run too long and overheat. Then with in insulation burnt off the coils, the electricity shorts right through instead of going around in circles like it is supposed to.

Matt , here in Europe we have plenty of these old Deutz engines around , and i know one thing : they can be pretty difficult coldstarters in freezing temperature and if they done a lot of hours . Does your engine have a glow plug in the inletmanifold like in mine ? If so , put some 12V on the glowplug for about 20-30 seconds before cranking . My 3cyl Deutz starts pretty well but it has done only 8000hrs .

@humbucker0076
@humbucker0076 2 года назад
Yeas, those Deutz engines are really hard to start due to the fact that they are usually not direct injection, but have a precombustion chamber setup. That needs some time to get warm, especially with old school glow plugs. And even if your Deutz engine is worn down to bits, that's not too big off an issue. One of the greatest things about them is their repeatability. It doesn't matter if you have a single cylinder, two or six. The engines only differ in the injection pump, crankcase and shaft. Every piston, head and cylinderhousing/sleve is the same. That makes for great parts availability. Like a piston with rings and cylindersleeve only costs around 200€ for some engine families. And with them not being in one single block you can just chance them easily too. They're just fixed with the headbolts into the block. Experienced personal can switch the complete upper engine in about half an hour. It's all so simple. I.e. for adjusting the compression/clearance between the head and cylinder, you just put washers between the block and sleeve. Deutz recommended method of measuring the clearance is just to put a piece of soldering wire onto the piston and to turn the engine over. The wire gets smashed and you can measure your current clearance. Edit: As for your "shut-off" lever. Often those Bosch pumps have their run position pushed int and it a pull out all the way to stop. Inbetween, before you start to feel the spring action there is usually a third position to give you more diesel during start up.
@horstszibulski19
@horstszibulski19 2 года назад
There are actually glow plugs, right behind the injectors, the wire could be seen not connected, would just take another jumper wire from the positve post on the battery for around 30sec before cranking and the chances of starting up would multiply... :-D

Yeah, you can learn not to spray ether (which is OBVIOUSLY very flammable, that's the whole point) onto a lit blowtorch

I’d remove that drive shaft in front until the engine is running good then reinstall it . There may be enough of a drag on it to slow the engine turning over , considering it has been sitting a long time.

A+ for persistence, my feet were getting cold and numb just watching you work outside in the snow! I think it is good that sometimes we have to wait just like you to see it start and some times you have to come back in a few days or wait for parts, makes it all real. Luv this channel and what you do!

I am amazed that you didn't put a new fuel filter on it before trying so hard to start it, especially after seeing what the inside of the pump looked like. Thank for sharing!!!

Looked like the filter was by-passed when the temp tank was installed to me. But l could be wrong.

The fuel filter suppose to screw on top of the oil filter housing. The lines had been cut off. But since he use an external tank He know that the fuel in his tank is clean so to start it I don't think he need a fuel filter.

Matt, for the "out on a limb" line you should be locked in a punitentiary And that everyone should give this a thumbs-up cos we don't always hear that frustration in your voice I prefer swearing and throwing things at reluctant machinery It's briefly satisfying

Hi Matt, love your videos, does look like the spinning speed was too low for the engine to pop off on. But this type of deutz engine (F3L812) is an indirect injection engine so you really need the glow plugs working. But beware with them the are most of the time just 2 volt type. So there should be a big resistor somewhere that's in series to regulate the voltage.

Great video Matt! Nothing like wrenching on equipment in the great outdoors. The whole time you were turning it over, I kept telling myself it’s just turning too slow. I was surprised not to see a little smoke from the ether though. Looking forward to part II.

You'll get it fired up and running, I'm sure of that, Matt! With something as old and "stagnant" as that old roller, it's inevitable that you're going to have to throw some money at it to get it going again. I know you know that. I will be clapping my hands in delight with you when it turns over!

Stripping down a Bosch governor like that - takes shade tree rebuilds to whole different level 🤣 Just don't stand near the crankcase until you're certain top governor is going to work, you don't want to win a connecting rod.
