Thanks so much for this interview. It highlightens many questions, issues, and I can so much relate to so many - in the yoga world, that's suppose to help you broaden you view, perspectives, to open yourself to your interior world, but also to be open to others and other ways of thinking, - I was shocked to see there were always the same speeches, talks, opinions, "good" ways to be a yogi, the idea of purity ... and all the eating disorders it can lead to, some taboos maybe, should sometimes be talked about, also for teachers maybe to help? and I think the essential message is : yoga has to help you for your life, to have a calm mind in a healthy body, somehow, to be in harmony with yourself - So what Laruga says about : Knowing what is good FOR YOU and there is no universal right or wrong - listening deep inside and being your own judge - is so important.

Very interesting series of videos, thanks for making this podcast with Laruga! I watched all 3 and I must say diet is a topic which should really be more emphasised in the Yoga world. All of those stigmas about what you are: Vegetarian, Vegan, whether you are following an Ayurvedic diet and so on should just stop being used. Labelling people based on their diet is bad. Eating whatever makes your body feel well and energetic is the key.

Yes, this conversation was fairly controversial, but, you’re right; when it comes down to it, we are all free to make up our own minds and also have to learn to tolerate others too ..

This is such an interesting topic of conversation and I applaud you Adam for brokering this important discussion. I am sorry to hear that Laruga has dealt with so many digestive problems on a vegetarian diet but to justify eating meat by saying that so many rodents and small animals are killed when harvesting the crops is in no way a justification- 1st, 70% of the world's soybean and other grain crops are strictly going towards animal feed for AG industry so by being Vegan you are already greatly reducing your impact but more importantly, our objective as Vegans is to reduce, to the greatest extent possible, the amount of cruelty and suffering to all life beings. We are not perfect but we strive to be as good as possible to the earth and all its inhabitants. So not a valid point to bring up... I respect anyone for taking the reigns of their health and making decisons based and informed by their own specific experiences but I just hope and pray I will never run into those kind of issues as eating animals will never be an option for me... it's impossible once you have seen the level of cruelty & suffering that farmed animals endure every second of every day... to willingly partake in this atrocity😔

Thanks Jade. I appreciate your openness in return. I agree in and of itself, this isn't an argument that can justify eating meat. On the other hand, I think it wasn't the main thrust of her argument. Ultimately, I think she just made her decision after many years of wrestling with it. And, this decision is an interesting one as I feel it is one based on gut-feelings (pardon my pun!) and non-rational. For my own part I used to be a militaristic style vegan and my understanding has not shifted, solely a 'feeling'...
@jadex38
@jadex38 2 года назад
@@keenonyoga Yes, you are right- wasn't her main argument but when you are used to hearing these kind of "justifications" from non-vegans, it's a knee jerk reaction to want to respond & debunk it😉 I hope I will never have to deal with those kind of digestive issues as I can imagine that it makes every day life pretty miserable😕

Im really enjoying these interviews and topics and look forward to wading my way through all the others you have done with amazing and inspiring people. Im a veggie and have an Ayurvedic food principle in my life, however I didn't take the interview in any negative way towards my choice. I actually thought that these interviews were more about talking about experimenting and exploring what works with your own body and when you are in touch with your body, what better person can decide on that than yourself. What I did especially love about this interview is the mention of eating disorders and the honest comments around that. So many people suffer with this on and off their whole lives and it does need talking about, there should be no shame. Compassion, understanding and support is needed. Namaste.

Thanks for your comments Kat, it's good to hear that you appreciate the nuanced discussion with Laruga, it's so nice to hear a veggie with an open mind. It is our goal to talk about what could be considered uncomfortable subjects like eating disorders, we want to highlight the reality of many people's situation and help in any way we can.

Hi Adam. I also have some thoughts I want to share with u. First of all thank you for providing the space to talk about this subject. For me it felt a bit like the main message of the interview was 'vegan/vegetarian diets can be dangerous'. And I do agree with that but I think this applies for every other diet as well if not done properly. But such a powerful message then requires a bit more of profound information while looking at the subject from a very neutral position. I was very much missing the neutrality in the videos. I understand that is an interview and just Larugas' personal experience but I hope you would agree that being a public person on youtube comes with the responsibility to also educate people. No studies, articles or documentaries were mentioned and there are so many. So many vegan athletes having different experiences than Laruga. Observed by scientists over years. Documented and shown in studies. I'm not even vegan but killing animals is one of the biggest reasons for harming animals, humans and our planet. "Justifying" or playing this down by saying "but I mean we're doing stuff all the time to other ppl, to animals.. whether we're vegan or not" is also questionable since it would be sad if everyone would think like this about everything bad in the world.

Hi Florian. Thanks for your thoughts and taking the time to comment. I do appreciate your sentiments. I would counter however if I may… Firstly, there’s a lot out there by so called experts/authorities on diet. So, this was meant to be showcasing something different . A subjective and personal discussion (within which we were not clearly claiming to speak for everyone). Second, re. Responsibility. I’ve also come down on your side of the fence previously. Yet, we have reached a pot with the sheer quantity of information out there that I would suggest now that the responsibility must now be with us as the purveyors of the multitude of opinions, options and ideas that are shared. Finally, as to the argument on harm, i also get you. But, my point still stands, we all are involved in harmful actions and the point (as per The Bhagavad Gita) is to not become attached to the self as the doer of good or bad actions. Yet, I do understand this argument will not wash for all. Thanks again for this engagement 🙏

It's the other way around... She's potentially saving human lifes from non responsible vegan activists that feel empowered from propaganda movies like "Game Changers"... The amount of ex vegans on RU-vid sharing their stories of quitting veganism is so abundant that one can only be amazed at the brain wash you guys are under...

A lot of vegans understand that animals are killed in harvesting plants. We also understand that fewer plants are harvested when you don't consume animals and its about doing the least amount of harm where possible. Kind of sounds like a slow introduction to certain foods to build up that microbiome would help with the bloating issue. This takes time, for sure.

Body doesn't reject beans and grains. When you avoid these foods for so long, its going to hurt when you consume them again. Start with 1 bean a day and build up slowly.

Digestive issues can be serious and many times don't go away unless properly address by a qualified professional. Most people who experiment with raw diets, fasting, food restrictions, or simply not eating properly for their needs, damage their health/digestive system. Sadly instead of addressing the problem end up blaming vegetarianism or even veganism (since is not even a diet). Adam: How many people you know have digestive problem's? And how many of them are veg? 🤔 Lastly if you both are giving nutrition/health advice you should (at least once) tell people to seek qualified help. (Good dietitian? Good nutrition professional?) Seeing a good endocrinologist? 🤷🏻 The conclusion of eat meat and go on its really poor. And disappointing from both. But just my opinion✌️
@keenonyoga
@keenonyoga 2 года назад
Dear Nuno. Thanks for your consideration and thoughtful comment. I think we did on a number of times say that we are in no way giving instruction here from a position of expertise. That much was clear I think. Indeed, reading between the lines I can see how you could see that the conclusion was to eat meat. I’m sad that that may have appeared to be the outcome. It is not necessarily my opinion. I myself eat a little fish now and again but haven’t eaten meat for 20 yrs. I don’t think any conclusions are being drawn here to be honest. As for digestive issues . To be honest , many. I know *so* many people who suffer nowadays with digestive issues. But, I might also say that a lot of this may be stress related too. All in all I do appreciate your listening and your thoughts. I think the conversation is really impossible to succeed as ultimately as diet works different for everyone and meat/no meat is a line in the sand that everyone must navigate . Anyway. 🙏🙏

@@keenonyoga You did make it clear that this is strictly a discussion on Laruga's own personal experience and how she was able to address her health problems. It no way is this show advocating for a meat based diet. That much is very clear. I do wonder if Laruga could have had similar positive results by eating mock meats instead. So many new great innovative products are available out there - it would be worth a try perhaps...I applaud her for havign the courage tp sepak about this sentive topcis... it seems senstive as there is always goign to be judgement coming from others but all that truly matters at the end of the day is how you feel about yourself and your life. I would never let others dictate how I live my life😏

Hi Adam and Laruga! Eating disorders are certainly an important topic and must also be addressed in the yoga context. In this sense, an interesting conversation. Beyond that, however, I find the chains of argumentation rather weak and a little disappointing. Nutritional science tells us clearly: we don't need certain foods to be healthy, but certain nutrients. Feeding on animals is the most inefficient and brutal way to eat. Of course, it makes little sense to eat mainly almonds and avocados instead of meat. But that's not the alternative either! And let's not forget: one injustice does not legitimise another. Because growing almonds requires a lot of water, we might as well kill the cow... (?) What kind of logic is that?🤔
@keenonyoga
@keenonyoga Год назад
Hi Ueli. Thanks for your comment. I agree, I don’t think the arguments anyone puts forth on this topic are logical as such as it’s a matter of emotion in the end as to what one decides to do. Just as vegans cannot understand meat eaters the same is true on the other side. So, in the end it’s what one feels to do - and remember for many it doesn’t feel brutal and we have to realise an opinion is still subjective as hard as we might feel it. I know this is not what you would like to hear , but my only motivation here is to present different points of view in the hope for further tolerance. I have also podcast interviewed Bettina a plant based chef which you can find on our podcast channel. So, none of this relate to any personal agenda of mine or even my own opinions.

@@keenonyoga Thanks a lot, Adam, for answering my comment. I very much appreciate the platform you’re creating and follow your posts and interviews with great interest. Of course, I agree, it is a personal decision of everybody, which diet to follow. Just one with a huge impact on others, especially on the animals being killed, but also on future generations, maybe deprived of a world worth living in. What I notice with some bewilderment, is a growing focus of (Ashtanga) Yoga practitioners on what “feels good for them”, neglecting the impact of their actions on the world. Our feelings are certainly important, but is critical thinking really totally out of fashion? Let's say it straight out like this: our system of yoga is built on the Yamas, and especially the first one, Ahimsa. What this means when it comes to the question whether a yogic diet should include meat or not, is probably evident for everybody. At least the traditional Sutra commentators seem to agree here in the most radical way. And let’s add this: not all vegans have eating disorders, and I’m convinced, with some effort, (almost) everybody will find a healthy vegan way of feeding themselves (especially in our western world, where there are so many options). One just have to want it… Thanks again and all the best!
