Great video! I am working on a ceiling mural and made the HUGE mistake of purchasing the LED black light, which is terrible if you are recreating a realistic scene. I'm painting a true to life night sky with full moon and some light clouds and tested the LED black light and everything is washed out with pink and purple. So I decided to try to find fluorescent, which is and always will be the best...and discovered that very few folks are making them or selling them. That's a real shame. Nothing beats a fluorescent black light, ever. Great video explaining the difference! I'm glad I didn't by all ten of the crappy LED's!

You don't need black light for florescent materials to work. So long as the light is of a longer wavelength than the light that the material will emit, they will fluoresce. The further into the visible spectrum, the dimmer the emitted light will be and the visible light that can reflect off nearby objects will make it's perception harder, but it still works. You can also go beyond UV. A low wattage x-ray source will emit NO visible light, very little UV light and the florescence will be incredibly bright. The x-rays will break down any phosphors with time and it's really hard to rave in a 2 inch thick, lead lined body suit, which is why we stick with UV technology.

I built a wife ball field in my back yard and am looking to add black lights to create a similar effect as "Cosmic Baseball" not sure if I should get multiple square lights (4 - 300 wt lights) build a frame and mount them and put it on a retractable pole 10' tall and place one pole/ light assembly in each of the corners or get the long rectangle ones and mount them along the permitter at the top of the fence (6' tall). The yard is ruffly 90' long and 45' wide. any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'd like to get a UV flashlight to play with in the desert around my house. The desert is full of fluorescent minerals and scorpions but also non-fluorescent cactus and rattle snakes. I am wondering if a light with a bit more visible light (400 nm) would work better for me than one which isn't going to light up snakes and cactus and other things that I may stumble on, anyway. I have exactly zero experience with UV lights. Any suggestions?
@UVBlackLights
@UVBlackLights 3 года назад
@Matt Rivers if you’re looking for more visible light then yes go with the 400nm. Although you can’t go wrong with either, because the 365nm will still put out some visible light. I would look into the UV Beast Flashlight. I have 2 videos on a 365nm and 385nm. It’s pretty powerful and has a little bit bigger beam spread than those smaller hand size UV flashlights. Hope that helps!

Hi there! Good stuff in your channel. This picked my curiosity. Last year I made a phosphorescent (not flourescent) mural and charging it with a 395nm light seems to yeld good results. Now, not having the issue of what becomes visible and not and being focused only on making the strontium paint glow as bright as possible (and charging it as fast as possible), I'd wonder if you'd still recommed a 365nm light for it or if in my case stronger is just better. Actually had the idea of going with a UV-C lamp for room disinfection when no one is inside, but I guess it would do a poor job for what I have in mind?
@UVBlackLights
@UVBlackLights 3 года назад
If you're just charging the strontium paint both 365nm and 395nm will get the job done. UV-C should charge it as well, I'm not sure how long it'll hold the charge since I don't really play around with UV-C. In the end if you just want to charge it as fast as possible any UV light source will get the job done. Hope that helps! Thank you for watching!!

wow - you are so amazing with all of the questions you have commented on and answered from this post over the past 3 years! I have been searching for weeks trying to figure out which blacklights I should buy. I don't know if you'll be able to help me but figure it's worth a shot. I want to do glow in the dark pickleball in my garage. I found a cob floodlight that was recommended but I can't stomach paying $400 for one light when I might need at least two! So I have been trying to research all of my options. The court needs to be 20 feet wide by 44 feet long. I assume I should hang one light on each end - kitty corner from each other for full coverage. I'm kind of at a loss as other than that cob floodlight it looks like LED lights or strip lights are my only option and I just don't know what's going to work the best and what's going to give me my best value per dollar. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thanks so much for any advice you are able to share :)

I have a client that wants a japanese statuette made from uranium glass illuminating within the display case. it is about 12" tall and apparent quite dense (in terms of transparency) what would you recommend to get the best penetration through the object if it was to be lit from behind or in front. Are there any good light bulbs on the market that you could recommend 4 me to buy to put in my living room lamp? hi, interesting video but you forgot to consider true fluorescent objects like fluorescent minerals : to me its the real test to check the quality of the fluorescence. So far I tried different led sources and only the standard Hg lamp with Wood glass filter produces proper 365 nm line. BLB fluorescent tubes produce less visible light that led UV sources .Take some fluorescent minerals and check by yourself to see :). Still , I know that most people are looking for the visual effect such as those you show on the video.
@UVBlackLights
@UVBlackLights 3 года назад
If it’s true 365nm and the minerals react to 365nm then the minerals will react to it. There aren’t many LEDs of quality in the 365nm, and yes BLB fluorescent does cut out more visible light, unless the LED is covered with woods glass. The only company that I know that has legit 365nm LED is Wildfire. The 365nm in this video doesn’t have woods glass, so it does create more visible light.

*Please reply* I work doing (NDT) non destructive testing and in order to perform certain operations I use UV lights around 265-345nm, I add fluorescent penetrant on the parts I’m inspecting and proceed to wash/rinse them under the UV lights. I usually spend about 6-8 hours daily doing this. Can this exposure be harmful to me? My face is literally exposed, I mostly get my hands exposed even though I do wear PPE gloves etc… Recently I started experiencing itchiness and a tingly feeling in my hands and forearms the two areas I get exposed to the most.

Since I knew that 365 nanometers UV is the more standard blacklight spectrum, I decided to spend a bit more and DIY my own filtered blacklight flashlight with Nichia NVSU233A LED, it was worth doing it correct from the start and I am already very happy with it, and 400 and 395nm near UV looks like blue-purple light that I personally obviously can see, and didn't mesh well with fluorescence for me (I grew up knowing what it means being around the old school blacklight fluorescent lamps so I knew what it's supposed to look like and yes, apparently I can also see 365nm UV light, to me it looks like very harsh purple, so I accounted for that in my DIY flashlight to make sure it's just exactly that, a genuine blacklight).
