Dr. Dan Shapiro a board certified plastic surgeon located in Scottsdale, AZ plastic discusses the difference between a mini facelift and a full facelift. According to Dr. Shapiro, there is often some confusion about the different types of facelift procedures he performs.
What is a Mini Facelift?
A mini facelift, which Dr. Shapiro also calls a cheek lift, approaches the cheek area only and not the neck, as a full facelift would. A good candidate for a mini facelift can look in the mirror and pull gently on the cheek area to see a decrease in the jowl area.
An ideal candidate for a mini facelift has minimal jowling, has some excess skin along the cheeks and moderately good skin elasticity. A bonus would be someone with very pronounced cheek bones because the skin tends to drape nicely across the bone and help the results last longer.
A mini facelift can be performed in office under local anesthesia with oral sedation. Other procedures can be added to improve the result, including laser resurfacing, fat transfer to the face or an eyelid lift. This allows the cumulative result to be better than a mini facelift alone.
What is a Full Facelift?
A full facelift, on the other hand, generally lasts longer and is more complicated. A full facelift is something that addresses the skin as well as the muscle and fat to elevate the jowl and the mid face (under the eye). A facelift also addresses the neck for a sharper jawline.
The facelift recovery process is longer than a mini facelift and the procedure must be done in an operating room with an anesthesiologist. A full facelift usually looks more natural and softer for a more youthful appearance.
The good candidate for full facelift surgery will vary, as patients may be in their 40s all the way through their 80s. The only way to determine if you are a good candidate for a facelift versus a mini facelift is through a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon.
Mini Facelift vs Full Facelift
Deciding which procedure is best for you must be done by analyzing your own goals and aesthetic needs. Each area of the face must be assessed for how it contributes to the overall appearance of the face with an individualized plan to address your needs.
Mini facelifts, or cheek lifts, tend to lose their effectiveness for older patients or those with significant jowling and loose skin, as a full facelift will be necessary to tighten the jawline and smooth the neck. In some cases, it may be necessary to add additional procedures like fillers or fat transfer to add volume that has been lost through aging.
If you're considering a procedure to address facial aging, it's important to discuss your goals with an experienced facial plastic surgeon to determine which procedure will offer the most benefit.
