Hi! I have a tiny black velvet that I was lucky to find at a nice home improvement store, which has large garden section. It had 3 leaves in a 13 cm pot and I paid 7,99 euros, which I thought was a nice price because the fancy plant shop down the block was asking 24,99 euros. I put the black velvet on my kitchen table with a mini dracaena marginata that I bought at the same store. They got indirect sunlight through the window and it was amazing to watch them grow. By the end of a couple weeks, the black velvet had six beautifiul leaves and I thought I should replant it in a proper pot. I mix my own soil with loam, peat moss, vermucelite, a small amount of organic compost, coco peat, and sand. It drains well and has a pH around 6.5. I also put stones in the bottom of the pot before the potting soil. I transferred 2 tiny palm trees and the mini dracaena to new pots. But when I took the black velvet out of the store pot, I was really surprised! It had a root ball almost the size of a tennis ball and the roots hanging from the ball were 30 centimeters (12 inches) long! The ball and roots looked very health. I had already purchased a 17 cm pot, so I put the soil in the bottom of the pot, then I gently laid part of the long roots in the pot, then again, and finally the root ball. When the rest of the soil was put into the pot, I watered it and set in the bathroom to drain overnight. So, here is my question. The long roots had to be carefully laid down in the pot, so they are not vertical, but resting horizontally in layers with soil in between the layers. Today, I got a tall pot that is not to wide and I was wondering if I repot the alocasia in a couple months, the long roots can extend naturally down and if new roots coming out of the ball want to grow outwards instead of vertically, there's more room for that. When I see people who grow the black velvet and the leaves are huge, the plants are outside with plenty of space. Mine has to be indoors because I live in Finland, but I interested in recreating the natural conditions for this and not a strong believer in the idea that alocasia like to be root bound. I'm sure this is an alocasia, not a philodendron gloriosum, which would have the big root ball on such a small plant and maybe such long roots. Do you think it's okay if I put the alocasia in the tall narrow pot to see how it will grow? Thanks in advance for your kind reply.
