In this video, you will know the key difference between Cp and Cpk.
To prosper in today’s economic environment, it is important to continually improve our processes. We must continue to seek efficient methods of improving our products and services to enhance their value.
To accomplish this, understanding the processes, their variation (common and special cause), reasons why it is happening and its statistical interpretation is pertinent. To understand more about it, clarity about Cp and Cpk is necessary.
Dr. Walter Shewhart developed the first control chart in the 1920s to describe common and special causes. The key objective of implementing statistical techniques is to
Improve quality
Increase productivity
Reduce cost
There are 2 key needs for process controls through statistical techniques
1. Detection (tolerates waste)
2. Prevention (avoid waste)
There can be 3 key types of variation in the process
1. Location (mean/central value)
2. Spread (width/span)
3. Shape (Pattern of variation-skewed, asymmetrical, etc.)
There are 2 key types of causes for the variation in the process
1. Common Cause: Variations that are consistently acting on the process. Produce a stable and repeatable distribution over time (in a state of statistical control)
2. Special Cause (Assignable causes): Variations that affect only some part of the process output. Often intermittent and unpredictable.

Dear Neeraj, Thansk for your query. SPC is a improvement tool. If we focus on the higher value of CpK then improvement chance will be less. So it is recommended to look at the lower value so that we can do improvement in our process.

Bell curve means normal distribution of data. If cpk is 1, it means process is not capable and bell curve will not come.

We need to follow either customer-specific requirements or the SPC manual. As per SPC manual, it should be 100 parts.

Cp is showing our process is capable to produce the product as per customer defined specification. If Cp is 2 it means process width is reduced and it can produce product under the spec. So if Cp 2 it will reduce variation and bell curve will squeeze.

Hello sir, thanks for the lesson. I have a conceptual doubt. In many case studies I have seen that the goal was to reduce recruitment time, increase production and other things related to VOP. When this happens, let's say reducing recruitment time at a maximum of 3 days, can I still calculate cpk using 3 days as spec limit? I ask you because in this case spec wouldn't come directely from VOC but from VOB.

When an organisation wants to reduce the recruitment time, it could be due to the pressure from the market or internal customer like process owner or top management. To achieve that we may be be changing the specification limit

Dear Suryakanta, Thanks for your query. It is important to understand why so do SPC study? Once we understand that, it will be easy to decide that when 100% inspection is done, there is no need for conducting SPC.
