Do you know the difference between a psychiatrist, psychologist and neurologist? Do you know which doctor to go to for a brain problem? What is the job of a psychiatrist, psychologist and neurologist? How are these three different from each other? Let's know the difference between the three through this video.
Their titles sound similar, and they’re both trained to diagnose and treat people with mental health conditions. Yet psychologists and psychiatrists aren’t the same. Each of these professionals has a different educational background, training, and role in treatment.
Psychiatrist: Psychiatrists are medical doctors who are experts in mental health. They specialise in diagnosing and treating people with mental illness.
Psychiatrists have a deep understanding of physical and mental health - and how they affect each other.
They help people with mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders and addiction.
What does a psychiatrist do?
Psychiatrists assess all of your mental and physical symptoms.
They make a diagnosis and work with you to develop a management plan for your treatment and recovery.
Psychiatrists provide psychological treatment, prescribe medications and do procedures such as electroconvulsive therapy.
As part of their work, a psychiatrist can:
provide urgent care for a sudden mental illness
help you to manage a long-term mental health condition
provide advice about lifestyle changes
work with you individually, or with you and your partner, family or carers
provide second opinions and advice to other doctors and health professionals
refer you to other health professionals
admit you to the hospital if required.
Psychologist: A psychologist is someone who studies mental processes and human behaviour by observing, interpreting, and recording how people relate to one another and the environment. Some psychologists work independently, doing research or working only with patients or clients. Others work as part of a healthcare team, collaborating with physicians, social workers, and others to treat illness and promote overall wellness.
Neurologist; A neurologist is a medical doctor with specialized training in diagnosing, treating, and managing disorders of the brain and nervous system including, but not limited to, Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), concussion, epilepsy, migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke.
A child or pediatric, neurologist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of neurologic disorders in children from the neonatal period through adolescence. Some of the conditions overlap with those seen by adult neurologists, and others are unique to this younger population. Child neurologists treat many of the same common conditions found in adults such as migraine, epilepsy, stroke, and Tourette’s and are also trained in conditions related to neurogenetics and developmental problems.
So after looking at your problems you have to go to a psychiatrist, psychologist and neurologist and take treatment.
