I'd be interested in the softer ferro rod also. A softer rod (I think like the Light-my-fire rod) seems to work better when the speed of the stroke with the striker is slower. Often you can use a knife blade and scrape very slowly and still get good sparks. This means that it is less likely to disturb your tinder bundle. The harder rods tend to require a fast stroke for them to work.

Put a file to the edge of those strikers. Square the edges off
