How many of you screamed "I KNEW IT!!!" when the female lost twice? It always looked to me as a kid that female vills attacked slower (the animations looks more sloppy) so i never sent them forward. And for some reason and the same flawed logic, I was convinced they gathered food faster ^^

I used to make only the male villagers do all the hard work like building, hunting, mining and chopping wood, while the female villagers only do stuff like farming, foraging and handling sheeps

When I was about 7 years old and just started playing AOE2, my older brother had convinced me that female villagers carry less amount of gold and stone, as the animation shows such (the female carrying little, with the male carrying look like they will break their backs soon.).. I believed him and for years I used to task male villagers to mine gold and stone and females to only farms.. It was only when I changed the dynamics, because I love the farming sounds that male villagers make (using a plough), did I realise how he fooled me. 🤦🏾‍♀️

when the game came out, i actually thought each gender had bonuses collecting from differnet sources (females being better farmers while males better miners)

Mayan farmers work slightly slower than other civs. When conquerors expansion was just released, only the male Mayan farmer was slow. So as Mayans, making your female villager as farmers was beneficial.

Before patch AoC 1.0b female Mayan farmers were better than the male counterparts. Male hunters also used to get +1 line of sight before that patch

When I was little I use to only want male villagers working because I thought they worked harder being men and being able to carry more.

I wonder how you would even get an idea to test out something like this. This certainly isn't something that you can notice in a game as you pointed out.

I use Female Villager mainly for food (Foraging or Farming, sometimes she become shepherd, but I didn't collect food from animal, except fish trap). Sometimes she become Lumberjack or Builder, but I rarely make her work at mining.

As a kid I had female villagers only used as builders, farmers' and lumberjacks. Never did stone or gold mining for them cause I thought it wasn't nice to the ladies Male villagers did all tasks though Plus part of me thought females built faster lol

bro when I was a kid I was playing the wallace campaign CHRONICALLY, just trying to defeat those scenarios was a task in itself (even though they were VERY limited) now I can crush them with ease in no more than feudal age on any setting, blows my mind how farm I've evolved from the 25 minute to castle age, to the fast castle 14 minute.

You know, for the game having came out in 1999 it still looks pretty good. Also AOK villager shows up with a shiv. Then DE villager shows up "Now this is a knife!"

Yes, I was aware of that in the 2000s... the knife sound was longer to be heard with the female than the male, and each combat she was losing. I was thinking the guy with only females was in trouble during fights !

I like how 0ad does this. Male villagers(who are usually also fighters) have higher gathering rates for mining, tree cutting and stuff like that while women are better at gathering and farming. Also if you put them close to male villagers they inspire them to work harder.

It would be interesting to have a scenario with realistic unit (re)production. Namely click a villager to a villager of opposite sex to start training a baby villager. The baby is always trained by the female villager. The baby villager is useless with almost no line of sight, can be captured like a sheep, and is very slow moving. Villagers can Garrison in houses, including baby villagers. Baby villagers will slowly lose health unless healed by a villager or garrisoned. Baby villagers are of random sex. Villagers can train military units in a barracks, but are replaced with the unit they trained. Both sexes can do this. Military units can also go back to being villagers and retain a combat bonus, but still must be retrained at cost in order to become a military unit again. It would be interesting to see the strategies that evolve. This is perfect gender equality but in the environment of an RTS, I think the important reproductive differences would lead to lots of gender-based strategies.

You forgot to mention how, at least in the pre-def. ed., only male villagers 1-shot boars and wolves after using the cheat code "aegis"

The explanation for why the male villagers win was not sufficient. You said the animation doesn't affect the time between attacks, and also said the animation causes the attack to finish slightly faster. But 1.05 isn't slightly faster than 1.5, it's almost 33% faster. So what is the actual reason for the male winning if attack animations don't have any effect? And if they do have an effect, then 33% faster attacks would mean he wins with a bunch of HP left, which he doesn't.

One thing I would like to see is the angles on animations and the reach. I always thought that the female villagers would be able to hit the target ever so slightly before male villagers. But maybe I’m remembering things wrong

I feel like male villagers don't have a (filled with farm food) sprite set. That's what I have noticed before watching this video.

It's been a long time since Age of Kings, but I could've sworn male villagers carried more huntable meat on the William Wallace campaign map, where you have to destroy the tower. At the time I thought it made sense. Maybe it was a wheelbarrow bug?

I don't think it's a bugged statistic in the original game. The animations are very different in the original, with the male villager swinging the knife(?) in a slashing motion, and the female villager stabbing instead. In the definitive edition the animations are more similar, with them both doing a stab.

One works the farms, gathers berries and tends to the sheep. The other does the hunting, the fishing, wood cutting, stone mining, gold mining and the building.

"Male villager will finish ... sooner". Okay, no need to twist the blade.

In the game 0AD there actually are deliberate in-game differences between male and female villagers.

In an alternate universe, _Age of Queens_ has the ladies winning. Tell me if I'm understanding this correctly: can a unit "reload" its attack before its attack animation is finished playing, but only deal the damage of a subsequent attack on the first (or a later) frame of the next attack animation? If a unit deals damage in 1 frame, has a reload time of 0.75 sec and an animation duration of 1.05 sec, for example, and if my understanding is correct, then such a unit will have its next attack loaded by 0.75 sec after making its first attack, but won't actually be able to deal damage until its next animation starts, yes?

Could some try in senario editor placing 2 scouts but one scout reveals the other scout by going forward, if they still attack at the same time does this affect who won since one scout now reveals the other scout

Wait, so is are there any differences between them in DE or not? And what about the gather rates and such? I need more in depth analysis! I would love to see an ever so slight difference where the Female vills gather food faster than males, Males gather stone and gold faster and wood chopping is equal.
