In this video, different generations of Dynamic RAM (DRAM) has been compared in terms of their speed/bandwidth and power consumption, in terms of the memory packages (SIMM, DIMM, and SO-DIMM) and in terms of the types of applications in which they are used. In this video, it has been also discussed that how higher speed has been achieved in each generation over the previous generation.
Asynchronous DRAM:
In this type of RAM, the RAM is not synchronized with the CPU Clock.
Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM):
In this type of RAM, the RAM is synchronized with the CPU clock.
It is also known as the Single Data Rate SDRAM, as data is being transferred on the rising edge of every clock pulse.
DDR SDRAM (Double Data Rate SDRAM):
In this type of RAM, the data is transferred twice during each clock cycle, with rising and falling edge.
Different Generations of DDR RAMs are DDR1/DDR2/DDR3/DDR4. In each generation of DDR RAM, the speed of the RAM was increased and power consumption has been reduced.
RAM Packages:
DIP (Dual In LIne Package)
SIMM (Single In line Modules)
DIMM (Dual In Line Module)
SO-DIMM (Small Outline DIMM)
Mobile DDR / Low Power DDR (MDDR/LPDDR)
This type of RAM is used inside the smartphones, which is optimized for the low power consumption.
Graphics DDR (GDDR):
This type of RAM is used in graphics cards for multimedia applications which required very high bandwidth.
Timestamps for the different topics in the video:
1:25 Asynchronous DRAM
1:48 Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM)
4:51 DDR1
6:45 DDR2
8:43 DDR3
10:17 DDR4
12:22 SIMM (Single Inline Module)
12:58 DIMM (Dual Inline Module)
13:40 SO-DIMM
14:20 MDDR/LPDDR
15:03 GDDR
This video will be helpful to all the students of science and engineering in understanding the different types of DRAM.

I found one thing in this video that was confusing. In the section on DDR4, you say that the I/O bus rate should be 4 times the internal clock rate (which is the same as for DDR3). But then in the table at the end of the video, it shows DDR4 having an I/O bus rate that is 8 times the internal clock rate. Is this an error?
@iamsmartacus
@iamsmartacus 4 года назад
After doing some research on my own, it seems like your information on the DD4 RAM in the earlier part of the video is correct, but the entry for DDR4 in the table at the end has some wrong values. You might want to double check this.

so on ddr3 are you referring the clock frequency just as the external data bus or the system clock? Because I thought the ram had to be as fast or faster than the system clock or else the computer would crash? I do understand when ddr3 came about there were improvements in the input out put and the electrical system and ram buffers too not sure what a ram buffer is and or how they actually improved ddr3

@aquaticsplashes
@aquaticsplashes 4 года назад
I get the pc number is mtps times 8 but not how you calculated the mtps is that a given number in the manual or is that something you calculated?
@aquaticsplashes
@aquaticsplashes 4 года назад
for example on the data rate for ddr4 200 times 800 you get 1600 but 400 times 16000 shouldnt that be 64000? but you still got 3200 but you multiplied 800 times 4 and got 1600 but multiplied 1600 only by 2 why is that one multiplied differently?

how is mtps calculated I'm not sure if I glossed over that part or if you added it but on ddr3 it cant be added the io frequency and internal clock to get that mtps

If a computer is using DDR3 SODIM, can it also use DDR3 SDRAM. I am looking at a Mac Mini and working out the best upgrade for it.
@Muneeb.266

I don't think so because SDRAM has DIMM packaging and it can't be placed on a SODIMM supported motherboard.

According to what I saw when I looked it up, DRAM started being widely used in the early 1970s, and SDRAM was introduced in the 1990s.

i have a doubt!!! you have given maximum band width of SDRAM as= (100*64)/8=800 MB/s but 100*64=6400 bits and 1 byte=8 bits so 100*64/8 =800 bytes/s but not 800 MB/s
