Scientific Calculator Tutorial. How to use a Casio FX-991EX Classwiz calculator to differentiate to find the gradient of a curve at a given point. You might want to do this in order to find the equation of a tangent or normal to a curve. This video shows you how to input a function of x, insert the x value at which the gradient is to be found and obtain the answer. Ideal for checking answers!

The video finds the gradient of y = x^2 + 2x +4 at x = 2. So to get the y value at the point where we are finding the gradient, substitute x = 2 into y = x^2 + 2x + 4 which gives y = 12

Which mode you use ma'am in my calculator mode is statistics so it gives me syntax error 😢

Hello. Students would usually learn how to differentiate in the first year of their maths A level course but there are GCSE courses that include calculus too.

Hello, we put x = 2 in because that is the point we've chosen to find the gradient at. Once we've worked out the gradient function dy/dx = 2x + 2 we can put in any x value we like and that will give us the gradient at that point. So if we want the gardient at x = 3 we put the value 3 into dy/dx which would give us the value 8 and so on.
