As a cruise ship passenger I can say that you would be our favorite crew member on our cruise. My family likes to incentivize great crew members that work hard and go above and beyond whether that is the person cleaning a deck area throughout our stay or someone that helps with an issue whether big or small. We do this by giving large random tips to crew members that deserve it and personally letting management know what a great job the crew member is doing. I know this video is for crew members but as a passenger that sails a minimum of 4 times a year, I want to understand what crew lives are like and what affects the people that spend so much time improving my life. So thank you for the helpful video and I really hope most passengers are like me and are like me and actively look to reward great crew members.
We were on the QM2 back in 2008 and in the main dining room we were at a table for two beside a family table of 8 The family was husband and wife, 4 children and a set of grandparents. The wife was a bully and treated everyone at the table really badly. Their waiter was also ours and he was very good at his job. She was unbelievably rude to him and there was nothing he could do to make her happy. She called the maître d over and made a complaint about the waiter including telling him the waiter treated them rudely. We had seen enough so when we left the restaurant we spoke to the maître d and let him know what was going on and said the waiter should have been given a promotion for the way he dealt with that horrible person. We have just returned from our 26th cruise and I have never needed to stick up for a crew member before but would do so again in similar circumstances. Frankly I could not not put up with people behaving like that I would get fired for sure so I guess I'm better off being a passenger.😊
My Father in Law is one of those complainers that complains about everything. I literally have to follow him and profusely apologize to the employees behind him. That's why I don't take him cruising with us.
People struggle with emotional intelligence and self-awareness. I refuse to be a cruise jerk but have seen some people with bad behavior who should just be banned from interacting with the public. My December cruise, people in the party behind us were being seated at an adjacent table. We had a window table. Instead of simply asking for one at the podium, the woman waited until she was brought to the table and blurted out very nasty and loud shrill "Is it too hard to seat us by a window!!!" I almost choked on my water. There is no excuse for that. As a people watcher, I continued to observe her at the new table. Her entire party did not smile once and actually frowned, keeping their heads down the whole time. She continued to send food back, scoff & sigh loudly and waved off servers dismissively. Luckily, it was my daughter and my brother/wife's 1st cruise so it was a learning experience on how NOT to behave. It was breakfast but we pulled our cash together that we had on hand and asked for the manager. We said that we would like to tip her servers bc no job pays enough to be treated so terribly. We gave them a $75 tip in hopes that it, at least, is some positive outcome from such a vile and unnecessary situation. While I know that crew could get fired on the spot but there HAS to be some way to put these horrid people in there place. Bullies only stop when someone stands up to them. You are 100% correct, truly happy people don't treat others terribly. If they do, they deserve that unhappiness.
Lucy, you have such a great attitude! You have so much going for you at such a young age with all your training and experience with working with all sorts of people. In future these experiences will be most helpful no matter what occupation you may pursue!!
Nearly every job involves customer service, directly or indirectly, even amongst co-workers. I learned early on that the customer is NOT always right, but the customer must be made to FEEL they are right. Perhaps it's only a nuance, but it has always made it easier for me to rise to the challenge of dealing with a difficult person.
You are so right! We are from the same industry and that is exactly how I deal with difficult passengers. I had a passenger who even called me "dumb bitch", but I still remained professional and kindly thanked him for the service. These kinds of people don't have joy in their lives, so they try to steal yours. Don't fall for it. You don't need another person to validate your worth. You know your worth and that's what matters. Other people's opinion of you is none of your business. As long as they don't physically hurt you, their words have no meaning unless you take it personally.
I use the "They must be a very unhappy person" point of view to keep from getting caught up in other's misery. Another thing that I use is "I'm not a social worker" and I don't need to fix other's bad behavior.
I really enjoy your videos and I can relate to most of what you say 😀 It brings back a lot of memories from our “normal” ship life. My job onboard is customer service oriented too (i’m a photog) and I think I can write a book about rude pax and their complaints 😀 Keep it up with your videos, they’re really interesting! ;)
Ha Ha. You mention 1000 subscribers. Today when I watch your video you have 62500 subscribers. Well done and thank for a nice channel. Always enjoying your videos. Keep them coming. Best regards fro Denmark /Adam
As a retired tour operator/ guide I understand your problems. Example idiots who come to Africa and complain about bad roads. Complain about African time, about traffic
I am a Customer Services Director (Purser) on Princess and I think its the most challenging job on the ship. The passenger services desk is generally where almost all the issues and complaints are dealt with. Of course the junior pursers or the senior assistant purser refer to me the passengers who won't accept their explanation or help. Believe me, some passengers wouldn't be happy unless they got the cruise for free. Next level up is the Hotel Director (huge job) or the Staff Captain or even the Captain. Is it any wonder I have a plaque in the crew bar?
I’m sure your job is a little better now that tips are included up front in the fare. I remember on the last night people going crazy at the pursers trying to get tip money/vouchers.
@@burningblue1254 I know … but your staff isn’t dealing with a 3 deep line of passengers trying to get money or vouchers to tip housekeeping or food service on the night before disembarkation.
Moaning's a British privilege - nothing better than a good whinge, especially on holiday. If anyone moans at me, I respond with my moans. Like: "If you think that's bad, guess what happened to me....". They dont bother moaning to you again :-) .
Beautiful Lucy! Could you make one interview with Guest Relations|Guest Services Agent please? ) And it would be sooo cool - with Royal Genie and Concierge and Next Cruise Representative!!! Thank you! You are the best!
I absolutely LOVE your videos, Lucy! Just discovered your channel, so I am binge-watching. I have a question: Are you allowed to accept a gift from a grateful customer, if they choose to gift you something as a thank you?
A miserable complaining tourist on a three day tour and his wife were real pains. They told me they were going to stay in the Gardens of Cape Town guest house behind the Gardens Center. They were under the impression that it was in the center of the garden. Yes the suburb of Gardens right smack bang behind the Gardens shopping mall. No view of plants, only the bus and traffic interchange center.....lol
They just look at you as a peony, and are confident to so such a thing, and they are happy within their own peer group because they think they are better then you.
