Difficult to read English words! With Kevin & Jihyeong 

Apparently colonel is based of a French word “coronelle” meaning commander and the spelling changed to colonel in English but kept the r sound

I actually just finished taking an Old English class and its really fascinating how a lot of old pronunciations (like the knee and knight thing) are residual spellings from like thousand years ago. Also a lot of the weird spellings can be blamed on the influence of French on the english language. During the norman invasion they actively tried to change spellings to reflect the french pronunciation, despite people still saying them the English way. Anyways, thanks for the fun video! As a linguistics student I always love watching your language videos!!!

The English language borrows a lot of words and sounds from other languages like French, Latin, German, and a bunch of others. Some words are spelled differently than they were a couple centuries ago but are pronounced the same while others are spelled the same but pronounced differently. A lot of the words in this video have French roots that make them sound different than they're spelled in English.

I mean... to be fair, several of those words are French words or French influenced, which is why half the letters aren’t pronounced lol. ‘Champagne’ is just a straight up French word and ‘Colonel’, ‘Choir’ and ‘Receipt’ are all amalgamations of Latin and French words (like receipt comes from the Latin recepta - to receive - and the Anglo-Norman French receite)

I think it's important to note, for when people ask WHY so many English words have confusing pronunciation rules... So many English words have roots in French, German, Latin, and other languages. We tend to borrow only "parts" of the original pronunciation, so we have some strange rules along with typical pronunciation rules in English. For example, "choir" comes from Latin "chorus", which was later adapted into modern French as "choeur". Same with "champagne." We're familiar with the word as English-speakers and we know how to pronounce it, but it's the name of a region in France where champagne grapes are grown. I really love videos like this because it also gets me wondering why our language works the way it does. It's so interesting to read up on the etymology of different words. Great video!

The key is to realize that a lot of these words are not actually originally English words, and that’s why they seem like they’re breaking pronunciation rules. It’s also good to remember that a lot of letters and pairs of letters often have multiple sounds they could make, so you can’t always assume one sound for each letter or combination of letters.

As an English speaker, with many non-native English speaking friends and students, I enjoy these videos because they help me know how to help my friends and students! So I like these a lot!

For "choir", the english word is from the french word "choeur" (the "ch" has the same prononciation) and "choeur" is from the ancient greek "khoros" (the first letter of this word is a "khi" which is pronounced /k/) And as always thank you ! It's an amazing video ! :)

Colonel is pronounced weird for some speculated reasons. The most common reason is because it was morphed into "Ker-null" in high pressure situations (battlefields) because if you say Colonel (as written) very fast it evolves into "Ker-null" for most native english speakers. This is the same reason that english officers were called "Left-tenants" instead of Lieutenants. Once said quickly it changes the vowels in english words to consonants "r" and "d" respectively. NOW YOU KNOW ! :D

The "Kn" spelling comes from older English, where the k was actually pronounced! For example, the word "knight" (pronounced "nite") was originally pronounced "kuh-nite" until the k sound was dropped in modern English. Hope this helps make it a little more clear!!!

Yeah, the problem with English is it has several different spelling conventions usually based on the words original language, but not always (some words were erroneously re-spelled, often with Latin conventions even though they weren't actually Latin words) Scientific terms often often use Greek spelling (PH instead of F), military and cooking words use French spelling (QUE instead of IC), and a whole swath of German nouns. It's rather unfortunate that it has become the lingua Franca, because the lack of a consistent phonetic spelling convention causes endless confusion.

Little lesson about english. Through the Norman conquest of England, french had been spoken in Enland for about 200 years. So a lot of english words as well as the pronounciation are influenced by french. This is also why english, a germanic language, has more in common with latin languages like french or spanish than german.

The key to mastering English spelling is learning the root derivation of each word, keeping in mind that English vocabulary is greatly influenced by a myriad of other languages: Latin, Greek, German, French, Spanish, etc. A good Oxford or Webster's English dictionary, even Google, will give you this information. You should have given colonel's homophone: kernel.

Im in denial abt how Colonel is read 😱😱😱 thats why sometimes english can be said the easiest yet the hardest language to understand ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

If it's a silent letter or a pronunciation completely different from how the spelling would assume, then the word isn't from a Germanic language, which is where Old English came from. Only like 30% of Modern English uses its ancient roots in spelling and pronunciations. Modern English mostly borrows from other languages, particularly French.

Colonel becoming kernal is basically the slurring of coh-loh to keu-luh to keul (there's actually a long history behind why this happened involving the switch between l and r). Like how colour (cuhlor) sometimes becomes (keuleur)

English has borrowed words from other European languages and lot of time English language does not change the spelling to reflect the pronunciation, especially if the borrowed language also uses the Latin Alphabet to write. Also, look up the "Great Vowel Shift" that happened around 1300-1600s. This shift changed the way the English language is pronounce versus how it is written.

The difference in the fonetic depends of the etymology of the word. For example: choir comes from Latin chorus and French cuer, and the sound it's "similar" to that lenguaje of origin.

Champagne makes more sense because the a_e makes an ae sound (cake , make , wake etc) , and similarly to the kn sound the g in gn is dismissed , thus the sound of champagne makes more sense then the others because it still follows a basic rule.

The 'p' in 'receipt' was added so it would look more similar to its Latin root 'receptus', and the 'k' in words with the 'kn' consonant cluster was historically pronounced in Old and Middle English and (I think) is still pronounced in English's sister languages!

In spanish we have words that means like 3 or more things. For example: Banco: means bank, a chair (from the park) or in argentinian tongue can be "to support some one"

So we read "receipt" as "receit" ?? I learn english since i was 8 yo at school now i'm 23 yo n no one ever tell me how to read it. Whoaaah. Thank u Dave

There is actually a reason why those words are pronounced like that. You can study them in linguistics :D For example, the k is silent in kn- words because it was difficult to pronounced. In Old English, they did pronounce the k. As more and more people became learnt English, kn- sound was simplified to n sound to help foreign speakers.

Alot of these words are derived from other language routes that have different pronunciation rules. Remember that while English is largely germanic at it's core with a nice smattering of romantic derived words, it draws from a multitude of cultures, languages, and dialects of these.

You should discuss the difference in pronouncing "read" (past and present tense), "lead" (type of metal), "lead" (to lead people). As well as, the usage of "they're", "their", and "there" and "two", "to", and "too". When English is your learning language, it might be hard to understand. Overall, love your videos!

1:20 It's either pronounced /ker-nel/ or /ko-lo-nel/. Mostly the first one, but the second one somehow ended up in the Philippines during American occupation. We do say /ker-nel/ as well tho. 2:50 Not sure why, but gh is sometimes, if not usually, pronounced as f in English when it's at the end of the word.

most of the words i think are pronounced like that because they came from Latin, the sound really similar to the potuguese words that also came from Latin (sorry for the bad english)

English words come from other languages such as having Latin and Greek origins so yeah. I believe that’s part of it

Colonel is a French word,which English has a lot of since the early middle-age was conquered by people from Normandie in France. The spelling of many words were changed due to that and either the locals kept the original word but started writing it like it was required or the pronounciation got twisted or change in the beginning or over-time. Also,I think Dave doesn't know that these word are from foreign languages or influence and that's what makes the standard English reading not apply to them.
