in todays episode, I discuss the recent storm Lillian and the destruction it's caused at the allotment site. From broken greenhouse panes to structures being blown down. I thought I survived the wind... but boy, was I wrong!
I discuss how to build a potting shed with all the accessories, a potting area, a snug with a log burner. encased in windows, overlooking the new pond. the potting shed will only be accessed via the bridge over the pond.
I also discuss remodelling the allotment plots and creating more metal raised beds on the new plot. I also give you a August plot tour, with a twist! I also show you other plotholders plots and their successful growing areas.
Cheryl, Jonny and Linda's plots are fantastic this year.
Linda has a channel called ‪@Feelgoodgardens‬
Give her a follow!
Cheryl also has an instagram: cherylgardens
While back at my plot I harvest more blauhilde beans and discuss the disasters on the plot this year. I also discuss which bed was more successful. The Dig or the No Dig bed. Is No dig worth it?
I also discuss the polytunnel and how the tomatoes didn't do as well this year. you win some, you lose some!
It's now time to start closing down the allotment for autumn. Removing obsolete plants that are swamping the winter vegetables is necessary now. Removing nasturtiums that are taking nutrients from the winter veg such as the leeks is needed right now. Composting the green matter will ensure nitrogen is added to the compost heaps, creating rich compost for next years plants.

40 years old and going downhill PMSL. No damage here from Lillian, thankfully. The worry (problem) is other people's rubbish causing damage so lucky that my 2 plots are upwind of them! Too scared to build my new beds just yet as I need to gather a load of stuff to fill them with before the real storms come. I'd report those plot neighbours, Linda & Cheryl, to the committee, hard enough to maintain a plot without that sort of peer pressure (grabs coat and runs a mile!) @Feelgoodgardens Good luck on the Little Welsh -Homestead- Danstead LOL

Summer started the same way in Wisconsin, US. It’s ending with a few days of 109*F heat index. Wayyyy too hot for us, not normal. The jet stream is all messed up and brought the heat to the Midwest and we get extreme humidity near the lakes. Surprised most veg did well except for tomatoes this year, just too much rain.

I'm with you, sometimes it's great to sow densely. I broadcast my old seed and daikon (forage) radish in beds where I need a ground cover for fall and am not concerned if there is no edible crop as that is not the purpose. Your great reminder about reducing overgrowth of plants that are not food crops is very timely! My green beans in Canada have been very good but not the shelling beans. Because we had an usually cool May/June and now our growing season is nearly over, I'm not sure how many I will get. I hope you continue your recovery!

Hi Danny , I’m Lysandra and I live in West Sussex but today I’m watching from Evesham in Worcestershire as currently on holiday go home tomorrow (Monday) …. I had an 12ft sunflower up until last Thursday , hoping my other tallest (10ft) is still holding up. As for runner beans, I have a handful from my first lot and my second lot looks like it may do better but weren’t ready for picking before we went away on Friday. …I’m already planning for next year , I’ve bought a bunch of seeds in the sales (so looking forward to sowing them next year) and I have been planning my layout for next year …I’m growing in garden (a reasonable size) , mostly in containers …so I can change a lot it about …I too take structures down for the winter and helps when I change things around next year. Have a lovely week ! 🌻

Hey Danny I am from Surrey and my french beans this year have been so good, especially the Blauhilde and the Cosse Violette. My Cobra green beans are great too. The runners ( Scarlet Empire) were slow and are constantly under attack from snails but they are now starting to come good, bit slow but enough to eat every few days and I have some in the freezer too. Enjoy Malvern wish I could be there this year but I have a special birthday holiday clashing with the show haha 🥳 I love the veg marquee at Malvern and the giant veg competition it is such fun, all against a gorgeous back drop. Bean harvest looked good 🫘 I’m still ok the fence about dig Vs no dig. Some of my beds have done better than others, but I do think No Dig is better if you start it right. It can get quite costly though if you don’t make your own compost. You reminded me to get down to the plot to pull up crops that have finished growing - need to fill up the compost. Have a great week 👍
