Thanks for another good vid, Beau. It reminded me of the old farm house and property we lived on when I was a kid in eastern Washington state. There was a ditch down from the barn that led into a ravine and all of the junk for generations had been dumped there, including old refrigerators and wringer washing machines. The old house was built some time in the late 1800's and when the place sold the farmer that bought it built another house, on an adjoining property, and turned the house into a rental house for his farm manager. My dad was a manager of this guys place in the early 1970's, and just like everybody before us, we threw our garbage there too. You'd be amazed at how much junk there was. I always wanted to go through it and look for things, but we were in the heart of rattlesnake country, and I was always too afraid of the snakes, as we killed a plenty. Some were as thick as your wrist, three feet long, with thirteen rattles and a button. They were some darn mean snakes too. Our hen house was the original claim shanty built in the 1850's, and our well was actually a spring with a little house built over it like in one of your other vids. It sat in a grove of birch tree's and was the site of an old Indian encampment. I used to find arrowheads all over the place there. We cooked on a wonderful old wood burning cook stove, and I remember trying to keep the heat regulated for the oven, to bake my moms home made bread, without burning it. It was some pain to do that in the summer time, but boy was that bread good. She used to bake some loaves in yeast cans, so we could have sliced round bread for hamburgers. I love Bottle digging and have since childhood. My brother taught me all of the more Archaeological ways to retrieve a bottle. I once found an in tacked green bottle with a "lady legs" neck and etching on it. The problem was, there was a tree root completely wrapped around it. I went home and brought my brother a saw and like a surgeon he cut away that root so the bottle came out intact. Turned out to be a rare bottle and worth a lot of money, It was dated to the 1700's! I tried to get a group together thru Craig's list, But everyone was to spread out over CT and we could never get together. I did find another woman who enjoys the hobby, so I can't wait until Spring.(I'm saying this on a day CT is getting hit with the worst snow storm all winter-LOL)Love your video's and I am subscribed too.

Chigg David here professional bottle digger here from SC. You have to get behind the buildings in Sharpsburg and dig privy S. 1860 stuff. You are in prime well and privy digging country. Any bottle newer than 1915 is worthless. Please let me come bottle digging with you. It seems like you are magical at getting permissions. Once you find some cobalt soda bottles than some Yankee threw in the privy from 1863 you well give up farm dump hunting. I love your videos you are a true inspiration. My grand boys love you. When you say hold your breath or do you want to they give out a big laugh. I tried watching some other metal detecting RU-vid S but it's always F this and F that so keep up the excellent videos Thanks

With Cumberland being a busy rail stop, local brewers seized on the areas supply of “high quality” mountain water for marketing. The Cumberland Brewing Co., used the slogan “Mountain water makes the difference. Good Old Export Beer.” They were in fact comparing their beers to German beers and might be why the bottle looks more European to you. Cumberland Brewing made Gamecock Ale, Mann’s Export, Kol Beer, Bock, Keeley Ale, Blackhawk Beer, Red Fox Beer, Sweet Life and Arrow 77 to name a few. Cumberland Brewing was merged into Queen City in 1969. It was the big brewers and union issues that finally hastened the end of the local brewing industry in 1974. Miller, Anheuser-Busch, Coors and others began to mass produce beers for the nation. Old German is still brewed today by the Pittsburgh Brewing Co., the makers of Iron City, which purchased the rights.

It amazes me how you can barely see a shard of metal or glass and know what it might be from. Like the heel of a boot in this video.... just amazing.

In the 19th century, J. & G. Meakin was known for the vast quantities of cheap ironstone china it produced for the domestic English market and for export to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. The firm was taken over by the Wedgewood Group in 1970. In 2000 production under the Meakin name ceased and their long-established works, Eagle Pottery, was then used for the production of Johnson Bros pottery. Eagle Pottery closed in 2004 when production was transferred abroad; the works were demolished in 2005.

In the late 90s I had an unhappy experience. I was walking in the Kaibab forest south of the Grand Canyon and found a couple of old bottles, a cork top whiskey and an AT (Arizona Territory, from before AZ was a state). Lot of history in the Kaibab, from Native American camps to the remains of speakeasies, to old Fred Harvey employee campsites; I've found pomade tins, cobbled leather shoes and tricycles, among other things. I wasn't artifact hunting that day, though, so I didn't have a collection bag. I sat the bottles by the trunk of a tree, intending to pick them up again on my way back. When I returned and hour or two later, I discovered some twerp had used them for target practice. Learned my lesson there.

Thanks for sharing. I was in the other room when the video started. I kept thinking you were saying Bartle. Those were some cool bottles. I found a cork top, rounded bottle completely intact along the original Central Pacific railbed in NV. The article I found about it said it was only made between 1800 - 1895.

By the way chigger, that barbed wire is called allis sawtooth and it was made in 1881 and its very popular with farmers that like to collect antique barbed wire

that barbed wire is worth a lot to a collector. also showed at the begging were someone stacked a lot of rocks. could it be blocking a cave opening?

That Ritter bottle was probably Ketchup. It was a great product. They also canned dry Limas in the off months, the very nest! The plant was in Bridgeton, NJ and had a huge work force during the canning months. I think that PJ Ritter the III is still with us. He married a girl I went to school with. Hope all is well with them. Oh, I think, but will not swear, that the bottle is from the 1920's so is approaching the Antique designation. Just like me.

Enjoyed the video, although when you stick your hand into places to get bottles or whatever, all I can think of is, "copperhead!"...lol...

When I lived in MS we would follow the roads pulp wood trucks wood make and find old home sites and dig their trash piles.

Beau, I would work that whole place. If nothing else you will have a bunch of trading bottles for ones you really want, or later, you may find they are better than you think. Never force a bottle out of the ground!

I was told that the 'dump' behind our place was over 40 years old back in the '70's. Was told there was a brass bed out there. I found a lot of old milk bottles, most were whole, booze bottles, a sugar bowl. with the lid, Tavern ware plate from a bar called The Brass Rail, a child's bracelet; Shield with rampant lions facing left, background in red, blue, white and green enamel on gold. Mohawk bottle bottle shaped like a skyscraper {it was mostly buried under a tree) And one black cast iron bell, bent clapper and a 6" long crack near the skirt that widened out about 1 and a half inches at the center. It was buried under a tree with about 1" of the skirt up and 3" length showing. I had to see what it was (We had a larger rusted iron bell for calling us to the house. .)

I'd be tempted to swing a metal detector in that cave area just for the heck of it as it would be a great place to stash a cache, especially with it back filled like it was with that newer garbage!

that J&G Meakin plate, their Hanley factory started around 1850, but the England inscription means its 1890+. The ridged bottle at 16:27 was a catsup bottle, again around 1890. The sauers extract bottle at 18:53 cannot predate 1887. None of this is a surprise, but I love researching these old companies

The little square bottles you are finding are shoe polish. I am probably not telling you anything you don't already know, but before the ability to read was something many people had, container shapes told people what they were dealing with and labels on cans usually had pictures to show you what was inside.

Beau, if an untouched North Dakota bottle dump only dated back to Teddy Roosevelt, is it something you or other collectors would hunt or is it too new?

Hey Beau. That insulator piece you found around 2:47 looks like a broken early classic multipart. You must have been near an old right of way. Although it is busted, many collectors repair and piece together early multi's as they are usually found in less than perfect condition. I noticed the base of the insulator looked to be fully intact and would actually be worth taking home. The sulfur cement can be dissolved in acid and the base could be used to complete an insulator of the same style and manufacture that is in need of a complete one. Let me know if you plan to return to this site and grab it.

J&G Meakin - Stoke-on-Trent. My Mother used to work at Meakin's in the early 1950's. Closed circa 1970. I used to play as a kid in the derelict factory!!

great videos. that US entrenching tool is one of the best things the army ever used. it is much lighter than the later ones with the pick. which as a vet i am sure you already know. those Fletcher's Castoria bottles held a terrible tasting laxitive.

PJ Ritter bottle is an early 20th century ketchup from Philadelphia. The tomatoes we're raised/processed in southern NJ and the resulting ketchup bottled by Ritter. I've heard they are some what collectible because they are unique to Philadelphia/southern NJ area and that they don't look like a typical ketchup bottle. Hope that helps

Hey Chig, there was an old dump sort of like that where I grew up that had a pile of old fence wire on top with brambles growing through all of it. We knew there had to be good stuff under it, so we got a come along, hooked one end around a tree and the other to the wire with a hook my grandfather made out of old 1/4 inch rebar. It took a while but we were eventually able to pull enough of the wire out of the way and dig under the rest. Something to think of if you decide to try to get in under all that mess

Awesome little site and loads of different ages tipped there which is good, I guess over the years the older stuff has been covered with the modern stuff much like my sites here in Great Britain so it would be a case of digging through it all like on your recent video and trying to get to the older bottles. I have the same issue with old Victorian Brick work on top of my tip sites and they are the old very heavy dense bricks not like modern porous lightweight bricks so it does amaze me that the bottles survive all that time? I found an old milk bottle in pristine condition down in John D. MacArthur Beach State Park in North Palm Beach and the local museum wanted it but they wouldn't put my name on the placard saying I found it so we kept it

Great video. I like bottle hunting but have done any lately. My property as an old dump sight and I have found a few bottles but most are screw tops. I have also been trying to find some good pieces of blue or cobalt blue and red glass. I Knapp projectiles points. I started with glass then went to obsidian. Keep up the good work.

New subscriber here. I find those square widemouth slick bottles too. Am told they're most likely shoe polish. That Ritters looks to be a condiment bottle, maybe catsup or chili sauce. The Fletcher's and Sawyer extract are nice.

thanks for the video. I've avidly watched all of your videos and I have been waiting for a new one. I live in upstate ny and I'm dieing to get out. we got a foot of snow this morning.

If you take some copper wire, stretch and then twist a few pieces together with a drill you can wrap it around your cracked crock and make it sound again. Not for liquids but it will look nice and can still be functional for magazines, umbrellas, etc... I hate seeing something as nice as an old crock being tossed if it can be fixed and still look cool with the pretty copper wire around the crock. Then, as the wires oxidizes it will look even nicer as it gets that brownish green patina on it.

Hey Chig, have you ever tried adding some sharpened wood tools for bottle digging? I find they seem to be good additions in certain situations since you can be a bit more forceful if you have already located a bottle. Maybe if you like the idea even throw the ends of some choice sharpened sticks in with the relics he next time you do some waxing so you can harden them a bit.

Cumberland had I think 3 brewery's Queen city, Old German, and one other I can't think of the name right now, people came from miles around to get married in the early 19 hundreds, like my grandparents in 1909 from central PA. (Lewistown) because it was the city with the beer. Cool bottles

That flat steel wire was used by sheep and goat farmers as the wool would not get caught in it. The earliest was called Buckthorn and dated from 1900.
