This video is about our recent trip to White Cliffs, NSW, Australia where our main goal was to dig for opals. We had such an adventure. White Cliffs is a gem in itself, the people, the scenery, the experience, more precious than opals. And the opal fields were so unique and amazing. We stayed there for over 2 weeks. Each night, weather permitting, we would wait until the sun went down and then visit the opal fields, where we would dig in the piles for opals. Using a black light torch, the opals were hard to find but easy to see. But beware the black light torches also show up any organic matter, including kangaroo and rabbit poop and other interesting specimens, like scorpions, spiders and tonnes of little bugs. So be careful before you put that opal in your mouth.
We loved digging for opals and the opal fields had such a wonderful feel to them. It was incredibly peaceful at night, in the pitch black. And it was so exciting when we found opals.
A word of warning, I would not recommend taking children to the opal fields. In the middle of each round pile are mines, some so deep that it would surely end in disaster if you fell in.
We've only been back a few days. We came back with a lot of opals, which included a lot of potch (colourless opals). However, we have quite a few with colour, including a few exciting bits. We are going to rejoin our local gem club and using the special wheels grind the surface layer off to see what we found. I'll post a video about that when we're done.
We had a lovely Xmas Day and a fun New Years Eve with the locals of White Cliffs. I have never visited such a friendly town, and I have travelled and lived in many parts of Australia.
White Cliffs is indeed a Gem, one that should be preserved.
The locals realise the importance of tourism, so if you happen to visit, and if you can afford it, a good idea is to spend a little money in the township. It doesn't have to be much, but it helps the town and the people.
Once a week, there is a bus that you can catch that takes you to the town of Broken Hill. It is a 3-hour journey, each way, and it will set you back $10 per person. We visited Broken Hill this way.
White Cliffs has an ageing population, and many people who live there, have never looked for opals. They just like living there.
I hope you enjoy this video, I'm back to cooking for my next video, but it was fun putting this one together. Thanks so much for watching, it encourages me to keep going with this channel.
Best wishes,
Lee.
p.s. Thank you, White Cliffs, for having us, we'll be back.
