We have begun digging a terra preta pit on our homestead in the Southern Ozarks of Missouri. What is a #TerraPreta pit, you say? Well, we’re glad you asked!
Ages ago, the Amazonians dug pits in the sandy soil to eventually build it up to be fertile soil for growing their gardens. The terra preta pits would be layered with biochar, bone meal, seaweed and fish emulsion, green matter, brown matter, broken terracotta pots and they would toss in their chamber pots. Once the terra preta pits were layered and filled in, then they would grow their veggies on that spot.
We’re recreating the way the Amazonians were building their soil as an experiment on our homestead to see if the same principals will work in our environment.
Will terra preta pits work in the Ozarks? Well… You’ll have to stay tuned and see (because as of the publish date on this video, we’re still working on them and hopefully we’ll have them up and running before last frost 2022!
The terra preta pits that we’re digging will be inside our passive solar greenhouse, which we’ll build around the pits.
Because of various things happening in the world, soil building inputs may be hard to come by at some point in the future. As a result, we’re going to be running some #ExperimentalGardening on our #homestead to see if there are different ways that we can produce fertile soil, year after year, without having to purchase soil amendments. If you’re thinking of digging a terra preta pit, you’ll want to stay tuned to see if this ends up being a success or a big flop!
One thing we wish we had is a backhoe to dig these pits. This is some super labor intensive work for both of us to do! But we feel like the result will be worthwhile for years to come!
