One idea I suggest to customer a lot is renting a chipper themselves and creating piles of chip, which can be decomposed and used as a mulch, or simply blasted into hedgelines etc and allowed to decompose. One of the cheapest ways to get rid of green waste!

Perfect suggestion 100%. I purchased a DIY'er/Gardener Friendly Shredder from B&Q. One of the best gadgets I have for our garden and I use it each year. The mulch is perfect for the borders. Go for it, you wont regret it and with all the trees and bushes you will use it for years to come and will pay for itself.

@BottleBrookGardens I just checked out to see if you had a channel. You do but no content. You really should start filming the work you do, they always do great on RU-vid, you could earn some extra dosh. Seriously, people watch drain cleaning 😆 I do. Concrete poring, block paving cleaning, building channels, renovating etc. Go for it, just set up a camera and let it roll.

I’ve dug up a lot of stumps, I’ve found a reciprocating saw works great for cutting the roots through the dirt, it won’t dull like a chainsaw will. Just dig, cut, pry, push, repeat…. 😎
@mm9773
@mm9773 5 месяцев назад
Yes, that works. Or the cheap version: a short pruning saw with a thick, rigid blade. Easier and much safer than trying to go at the roots with an axe.
@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 4 месяца назад
That's what I did for a stump that grew close to a concrete retaining wall and had massive roots. I don't think I'd have succeeded without the reciprocating saw. I tried to dig up as many of the roots as possible to make sure they wouldn't grow back though. No idea what species of tree that was but it had self-seeded and grew back with a vengeance when we cut it down to the ground.

Last week you asked us about Palm trees. In California the Victorian Era definitely used Palm trees in the landscape as seen in many pictures of Los Angeles and Riverside, CA. They were also used at the trains stations in both cities and I found this to be true in Spain. The era also used palms as potted plants inside their homes. I think you stated they are not original to your station. I found a short article on History of Palm planting in Britain. They tried with the New Zealand Cabbage Palm (a shrub). It seems that your station has produced a few palms where others failed. You have something special and desired by the Victorian's. In a way a hint of international travel to have one at the train station, I think. I leave it up to you to decide if they are special enough to keep. Some are messy and others require maintenance. Only you will know if it is worth future efforts to maintain.

This was hugely popular in Australia too! In fact globally! The podcast episode “Palm Reading” by 99% Invisible is all about the palm craze, including how people even stole palm trees to sell on palm tree black markets!! You can still tell very old houses in australia if they have two big tall palm trees out the front still, on either side of the front door. Some abandoned houses have palms trees so tall it’s amazing. Houses with both, original, tall palm trees still remaining are quite sought after here and quite expensive now!

Good job done with those tree stumps. I would then take up more slabs and dig out the rest of the buried roots. If you don’t, they will eventually rot and the ground will sink making the slabs uneven. I did the same in my garden years ago. With a walnut tree. I took the stump out and left the buried roots . I ended up with a large sunken patch in my grass about 5 ft diameter and 1 ft deep. Keep up the good work 👍

While I prefer actual gardening, I do like that feeling of cutting trees and clearing out. You can quickly see the results and the sore/tired feeling afterward is satisfying and a good excuse for hot baths, cups of tea, and putting your feet up. Much better in winter than the blazing sun we have in the summer. I was happy for you that the stumps came out so easily (relatively). In my area of Southern California we have a lot of clay soil and rocks, and one almost needs a jackhammer to do that job. Often we just cut the stump even with the soil, drill large holes from the top, and use "stump killer". Now you are on track to restore your pavement! Another person mentioned the bamboo. I know you want to clear out, but if you have more, consider saving it to make garden structures in future. Glad you could find a way for the tree debris to be recycled. The driveway and the front of the station are really looking great!

@@ruadhscottygirl2480 We had bamboo at my childhood home, so I know what you mean. I meant the cut pieces, which can be used to build fences, privacy screens, trellises, or other plant supports once they are dried, as in dead. Someone else mentioned that bamboo pieces for building can be expensive to purchase at Home or Garden Centers. :)

Kids can be entertained by the most annoying events. I was a young boy in the late forties, We lived in a ground floor apartment in a building heated by a coal fired steam boiler. The coal was delivered by truck through chutes that passed through basement windows directly beneath our windows. The coal made a lot of noise and some dust as it was delivered. It entertained me and I would move from window to window as the truck and chute were moved as each portion of the coal bin filled up.

Brushing and cleanup is hard work ,but if you do it right you can have fun doing it. Personally I would have rented or had someone come in with a large wood chipper to reduce the brush down to chips and used that material for landscaping or mulch around the property. Good work though cleaning things up.

If I need to remove a tree stump, I first leave around 5 or 6 feet of tree trunk on the stump to use as leverage to get the stump out after cutting the upper roots on the stump. If it's a big tree I attach a come-a long to leverage out the stump assuming you have something low to the ground like another tree to attach the strap.

You are very sweet people and I wish you every success with your project. This station will make an amazing home. I know everyone is going to be giving you advice but one of the problems with posting work like this on RU-vid is there is always going to be a time lag with the work shown. So most of the advice you get is after the fact. I strongly suggest that when you are doing work that is not familiar to you do a search on RU-vid and you will invariably find lots of channels showing how to do what you are planning to start yourself. I am surprised that the gentleman who was helping you with the trailer to haul away everything didn’t just bring a mulching machine to the site and mulch everything right there. You have plenty of property to use the mulch yourselves. It looks like you have a lot more to do in terms of clearing overgrown areas so maybe you should consider bringing a mulching machine onsite. I am sure there are rental companies in your area with these machines. Clearing overgrown areas like you are doing by hand is very time consuming and back breaking. Save your energy for all the other work you have ahead.

Suggestion: Record some ambient sound/noise like chopping sounds or silence (of the room where you record voice overs) or dragging branches or branches being tossed into the truck. Then weave them in between the vo segments. It creates a more “natural” soundscape. Music is good too but you need to fade up and down between vo cuts to not be too jarring. This all emulates the video/film experience we are used to and will be more appealing and entertaining for your audience!

I've grubbed out more than my share of stumps in my lifetime, & that is hard work no denying it. ("Grubbing" is what we call digging up stumps in my part of the US.) I'd suggest using an axe to cut those troublesome roots, however when I grub out a stump it takes me a couple of hours so maybe your husband & friend know something I don't at being more efficient.

On a H&S note, when using chainsaw or brush cutter. It’s advisable to wear a visor or goggles as a minimum. I know this sounds nitpicking, but I was a safety officer on a heritage railway project.

You’re absolutely right, I’ve learned a lot about safety gear from our comments and you’ll never see me using those without my goggles again.

Maybe invest in a wood chipper? I hated to hear you have bamboo it's very hard to get rid of. I'm loving your channel 🙂💐

An engine hoist/crane is a great way to pull out tree stumps.

With all the overgrown garden you have, it calls for heavy duty- petrol chainsaw, battery pack carrying leaf blower, commercial drills etc. More outlay but if you look after it, will last longer. Bamboo is v invasive but a fantastic natural material to make stuff. In China its used for scaffolding - no metal tubes or planks!! 😮

Clearly, the gas chainsaw works better.🎉. It will help the clearing work go much faster.

I'd be keeping that bamboo for garden stakes. Do you know how expensive simple bamboo stakes are?
