Tolkien fans, Warhammer fans, Deep Rock Galactic fans, Dwarf Fortress fans, Overwatch fans, and D&D fans are all united by one fact. That fact being a dwarf is the greatest and most loyal companion to ever have.

This song is legendary because it carries that same "Uncle Sam" or "Yankee Doodle" energy. You just know "Diggy Hole" was a taunt made by the knife-ears to make the dwarves sound like childish little mole men, and the Dwarves took it and ran with it.

It’s incredible how a joke and few words became a massive song

I have this headcanon that in some fantasy universe out there, an Elf once told a Dwarf to piss off, saying something like “Go dig a hole, Shorty.” The Dwarf, offended, pretended to use a shovel as he replied in a sarcastic voice “Oh, sure…I’m a Dwarf and I’m deeging a hole. Deegy-deegy hole, I’m deeging a hole. Phooey!” The Dwarf went home, and he relayed the story to his kin. Eventually a mob of Dwarves chased the troublemaking knife-ear out of town, all while jokingly chanting about how they are Dwarves, and they’re digging a hole. From then onwards, the joke based on a Dwarven stereotype develops into a full-blown song; each generation in the clan adding their own proud lyrics to it and belting it out in times of triumph and hardship alike. Centuries pass, and it becomes a sort of anthem for all Dwarfkind across the land, equally at home as a lullaby to newborn beardlings, as a war cry for hammerers on the battlefield, or as a hummed tune among the few living ancestors who dwell in the Great Halls. From the earliest days of RU-vid, it started as two friends on a grand quest, trying to come up with a song to sing whilst digging. I was just a kid back then, only 10 years old. I love how a one minute skit in a minecraft video has somehow evolved into the default song for all dwarves in all IPs.

I like how he kept the superior instrumentals of Wind Rose for most of the video while keeping the superior vocals of the Yogscast version.

I remember watching the original Yogscast episode of their old Shadow of Israphel Minecraft series. Where Simon just started singing randomly as he was digging, just to get in character and goof off. To think it started off as a random off-the-cuff moment, and it has now become a beloved part of internet culture.

This felt like the dwarven clans meeting to vote for the new high king and in the end everyone is feasting after the coronation.

I am convinced that a not insignificant portion of the population would choose to become dwarves if they were given the chance, living under the mountains, forging master craft armor, digging through rock and stone unearthing gems and gold, and drinking ale with their bearded brothers and sisters, sounds like a life well spent if you ask me.

As you venture deeper into the cavern you begin to hear something. Chanting? No singing, you reach the end of the tunnel and you see a massive city filled with dwarves. The men of the mountains have united at last and they celebrate with an anthem of fellowship.

I just love that the image of a dwarf is that consistant throughout all of fantasy media. most of the other fantasy races get morphed and merged with creative ideas and concepts. But the "dwarf"-concept is as solid as the rock it digs into.

From 8 eight years old to 20 years, this song has been one of the best I've heard and brings back so much nostalgia for while I played minecraft and even figured out the beat on a ukelele. Thank the Yogscast for the original, but everyone else cemented it in history!

This is my favourite mix of all the versions of the song. Because it genuinely sounds like a chorus of dwarves all singing in unison. From the deepest deposits all the way up the mine shaft to the mine entrance where the raucous singing of thousands of hard working dwarven miners can flood their undermountain kingdom.
