LOL there is more to art than just light and shadow, I am sure that regardless your artwork has plenty of great qualities just because it carries your unique voice. Please do let me know if there's any topic you'd like me to make a lesson about. Thanks so much for your support!
Reflected light is something that I struggle to wrap my head around. So as I take it, the light ray hits the ground and then reflects in all directions, but rays that travel a shorter distance create a brighter reflected light, which is why the underside closest to the light source of a sphere is brighter than the opposite side? Is that how it works?
You are correct! Direct light is much stronger than reflected light. On every bounce the intensity decreases so it will always look weaker than the side directly exposed to the light source
Before working on digital canvas I have also worked in Acrylic and Oil canvas mediums for a long time and best way to understand is just do more real life study. Try real life objects, figures, humans for your subject of painting more you practice it, more you will understand how they actually work.
Hello! I really enjoyed this video because it was one of the only videos on light sources and shadows that made sense to me. I have a question though. I’m just beginning pixel art and have watched many pixel art tutorials on light and shadow but none of those videos made sense to me. I have even gone on miniboss’ ‘Basic Shading’ article and didn’t understand anything. I just wanted to know if this video could be applied similarly to pixel art? Thank you so much :)
Hi Leahmari! Thank you for your nice comment. This theory applies the same to any style. Pixel art tends to be quite simplified and abstracted in comparison to the depiction I made. This means that subtle variations (like reflected light or core shadow) would probably be mixed and represented with one value only. On the other hand, what you would really have to watch out for is keeping the clear division of light and shadow readable. Only two tones, if this reads the rest is bonus. I hope this helps :)
