I usually subscribe to anything visual art related, be it both digital or traditional, characters, landscapes, I love all and its a mistery to me how I haven't found this art channel yet 0.0
I'm probably late but sometimes the recording program doesn't show when the canvas is rotated. Also, in Photoshop, I think I remember I use lasso and press some keys to make it easier to use
I love this kind of style! I like to do art digitally too but I have really trouble going from drawing with an outline and everything to painting like this. I have no feeling for light and shadow and I don’t know which brushes are best to use and how to use them and it’s just...so overwhelming and frustrating... I just don’t know how I should practice these things and I often find myself giving up and returning to my “art safe” space. Art is haaard lol When I see artwork as beautiful as yours I try to not to compare it to my “inferior” art (since that only tears me down) but to instead use it to fuel my inspiration and motivate me to continue learning. Keep up the good work! You’re amazing!
If you feel like shadows and lighting and coloring is too hard for you, begin with a very simple art style. Then, as you get better, slowly start incorporating shadows and lighting into your art
Try finding the book Color & Light by James Gurney. It goes into great detail about light, shadow and how they affect color and also uses tons of examples to show you what to look for when you're trying to paint just about anything. It's so good that reading it felt like reading a skill book in an rpg.
tip : if you press control + H in photoshop, you hide that outline thingy when you have selected objects. it helps you block out the shape paints without getting distracted by that outline.
I would love a brush tutorial where you explain all the brushes you have and how and when to use them. As well as maybe a download link possibly? 🥰🥰 thank you so much!!
u really hit me with "That once draw every single eyelash" That's me this makes me realize how much I was doing wrong. Warmful and beautiful painting, love it!
Working on the background first seems so obvious. I’m primarily a traditional landscape painter(it’s what I’ve trained in)...but drawing characters makes me happier. Every time I *try* to draw a character I have done the background last and it never looks great together... D’oh 🤦🏻♀️
Sam: "We all have hands." Someone without hands: "Well, excuuuse me." Haha. For real, though, I really like your style. The light and form are very expressive and insightful.
FInGEr gang right here!! I use ibis paint x, and upload speed paints to yt. I find using ibis easier than other apps on phone since its interface is similar to those of computer softwares .
This is basically how I work, but my biggest challenge continues to be mentally fixating on unimportant details - like in this painting it would've been her ear, forearm or foot - & over-rendering them. In client work I do this less bc of deadlines but in personal work I'll just zone out & suddenly I'm rendering every section of hair 🤣
yeah, it's artistic license. In photography you're not going to get skin that red & saturated on a human arm from subsurface scattering, since the arm is solid not just cartilage like ears. You might get red reflected light if she had on a red shirt or from a torch or fireplace on her other side.
just found you today, omg I love the lighting and colors on your paintings!! Thanks for creating videos explaining your thought process, that's amazing 😊 I am very interested in how you approach painting hair, you have just the perfect balance of soft and hard edges and brush work visible 👌👌👌
Interesting approach, usually people use a "detailed" sketch that they fill with flat colors and then add the shadows etc, but You, you paint directly all at the same time light color etc... isn't it a bit risky? you can't go back if the colors don't harmonize as you would have liked. So, do you recommend this technique to beginners? (those who have not yet mastered the theory of colors, anatomy etc.).
Actually a lot of traditional painting uses a technique similar to this! I actually prefer it too since I get bored easily if I have to follow a strict, detailed sketch I’ve already spent a lot of time on. I think any technique is good for beginners since you’ll have to practice to get good at any technique regardless :)
That's why he likes to paint his Backrounds _first_ so he get's a better idea of how the colours harmonize off the bat. With a good understanding of colour that actually works out quite well if you ask me.
I would personally love to see a light theory from you, and what colours to use, and shading and how to add like texture to cloths to make them look ruffled with shapes, but mostly lighting, light is such a big part in your art and I love it!! Good job!
People think it's all about the details, but I recall it with my feelings. To me this piece was very interesting and it reminded me of how my cat looks at me when I'm eating something she might want to try or smell. This whole piece just pops and I can't look away from it or really pay that much attention to the details other than the ones that matter and help me remember it. I'm humble, it's a very sweet video
I'm having such a hard time "refining" the sketch and adding in those small details. I'm trying to move away from the hard lines that I used to make in order to clearly show my character but I wonder how I can learn more about this. Watching this video helped me see what you were doing but it just looks like you are using smaller brushes and lots of colors to fill in the areas better. I am lost :(
I love the painterly edges on your paintings! I would love to see a video where you explain how you go about using and switching brushes during a single painting. I draw in procreate and have yet to find a brush that gives off an airbrushy but also painterly look thats also feels good to use.
BTW, instead of activating a selection to constrain your painting to your overall character color blocking, simply click the Lock Transparent Pixels buttons in your Layers panel. Doing so will prevent Photoshop from painting on transparent areas. Very handy.
OMG!!! This is AmAZinG💕💕💕 and really helpful^^ Could you cover anatomy next? I'm currently trying to improve my art and the main problem that i have with is anatomy:') Pls help T^T
this is the very first video I saw sam did and I remember thinking "wow this artist is really amazing, and he sounds like a guy who wouldn't threaten to hit his viewers in his videos, I'm sure nothing will go wrong"
I don't understand why ppl roasting him with this video. Nothing is emberassing, he just explained his art so well. Good job Sam!!❤ I'm learning so much from u.
damn this is the best tutorial on digital painting I've found so far. You're way better at actually explaining what you are doing than a lot of other youtubers!
Always start with a Sketch! Never Ever forget the sketch! Don't you even THINK! about forgetting the Sketch! If the sketch is not there You're DONE! Throw everything away. And I mean EVERYTHING. Pencil, paper, eraser, ruler. Your whole art supply- know what? Might as well Forget about the chair, Throw that one out as well. Everything. It's over. Stop drawing. And take a good look at yourself. Shame! That's how one o my pal stopped drawing. He didn't do the sketch.😔... He was never the same again. Lol. Love your Videos, 💯 Always inspirational✨🏆
hey sam, love your videos! would you ever make a video explaining how you decide to pick colors for lighting? including shading and bounce lighting etc etc
This is extremely Useful. I just picked up an art tablet for my PC, and while I'm pretty decent at physical art, I've not done a piece in about 7 years, plus digital art is something entirely new to me. This process has showed me the fundamental steps required to getting things looking good. Thank you.
As a hobbyist now trying to really get into colour, this was immensely helpful! I followed along with this video as a type of tutorial (though I swapped the characters haha) and I was amazed how simple yet powerful the process and approach is! I'll definitely be trying this myself on some other photos I find from pinterest and will see how it goes. Thanks for the video with all the tips and the explanations!

respect! It took ages! :D good for me to understand what it takes! :D Thanks for the video though
I can see that ur using a laptop bit how do u actually draw? Is it like a touch screen one or r u using the touch pad to draw that! I seriously have no idea
This was a truly excellent video. I learned so much, thank you! Not just seeing your process & your commentary, but your insights and the *reason* you were doing things. The result is amazing - such an engaging composition, both visually and emotionally
Dude, yesterday my huion kamvas Pro 13 came in (first digital drawing device). This is exactly what I needed! You always come in clutch man, thanks a lot!
Hey man, I really have a problem with placing detailed shadows on faces and other detailed parts of my drawings. I understand the whole "imagine you being the light" concept, but I still can't seem to accurately create small realistic shadows. Do you have any tips?
This is amazing! Do you have advice on knowing what colours to use and how to add lighting correctly? I find I have trouble knowing how to bring the character into the environment.
