Digital Piano Duel - PIanoteq vs Truepianos

This is my favorite duel so far, we are putting two of the very best physical modelling VST software pianos up against each other in a shootout. The challengers today are MODARTT PIANOTEQ and 4FRONT TRUEPIANOS.
These pianos are fantastic because they do not use massive sample libraries, everything you hear is modelled in real time using algorithms. The advantage is they are lightweight and consume less resources than sample-based pianos. You can also adjust parameters on the fly to create new and interesting piano sounds.
I always love to hear feedback from the viewers so please post a comment telling me which you prefer!
We will be using a midi file from Purgatory Creek to do a fair and consistent test of the two instruments. Audio recorded direct to a Zoom H4N in CD quality, levels matched in Cockos Reaper and then uploaded to RU-vid after adding visual effects. Reverb was disabled on each instrument.
Thank you to Purgatory Creek for their kind permission to use the midi file.. Visit their site for many more Digital Piano Shootouts!

PTeq sounds like a real piano at times and like a 90s keyboard at times. True sounds like a very musical digital piano with its own character.

You don't mention the sounds that TruePianos has: Atlantis, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Amber and SapphirePed each with 8 or so presets. I bought it a long time ago and have never felt the need to move.

I have both. I never use Pianoteq. I play TruePianos Diamond Module at least 4 hours a day. It is so expressive. It's just like a real instrument

Very interesting. Truepianos seemed to have a more traditional timbre a bit sharper(like a piano with harder hammers and more high treble content) but pianoteq seemed more expressive and responsive and less like a recorded sound.

yes, i tend to agree with you. i have a copy of pianoteq so I'll be covering it in more detail during the autumn.

I own the old True Pianos version made in 2011 and I also own PianoTeq 6 stage, Addictive Keys and Sonivox Ensemble 88 v.2.5. I also own a Yamaha C3E concert grand with Disklavier system installed. I can tell you with certainty that 1. Pianoteq 6 is way better than 5 but only as far as it concerns the Petrof and Bechstein additions. The Steinway D is the worst Steinway D representation I have heard 2. If you run True Pianos through an analogue console, say soundcraft notepad 12fx (the cheapest) and you play with eq and reverb you get fantastic sound. I run PianoTeq 6 into console and the sound is even worse, which is weird, cause sonivox 88 and addictive keys sound fantastic through analogue console. CPU and RAM wise truepianos is the best, you can run it with a 10years old laptop. Pianoteq 6 requires i5 cpu to run adequately, otheriwise its full of clicks and pops.

truepioanos is cool - it has that lofi feel - warm and saturated a bit - i'd use this for my tracks, thanks for video - it's cool

I've tried a lot. Finally I got me TruePianos. It's not the sound that convinced me but the dynamics. It's the only thing we've got to compete with other instruments.

i'm a huge fan of the sound of both, it seemed to me though that TP was no longer in active development, do you know anything about that?

Which soundcard do you recommend for the least latency? I have a creative x-fi titanium that can go as low as 5ms without soundcracks. But still, I feel the lag compared to my digital piano's own sound.
@palamud
@palamud 4 года назад
I have a Creative x-fi Titanium too, and I can't notice the difference between 1ms and 5ms latency when using Creative Asio driver and no audio interface. If you are getting crackling below 5ms, maybe Its CPU issue.

hi, my opinion is this: true pianos have excellent dynamics and sound, but for my taste it needs to improve the control system to adapt it to any sensitive keyboard. I find it difficult to achieve that on the modest keyboard I use regularly. The basses tend to be too powerful, I have a hard time mastering them. On the other hand, Pianoteq allows a good adaptation, in addition to allowing absolutely incredible modifications that revolutionize everything, for example eliminating the inertia of the keys. This makes more accurate playing possible with less effort and study. He also has an almost insane variety of pianos, including several harpsichords and a virginal. The variety of possible settings for each one is mind-boggling, you can model absolutely everything and save all the presets you designed. Of course, all these qualities make it much more expensive than Truepìanos. But when you want something less distracting and that sounds great, Truepianos should be in your arsenal, because their sound is so pure and expressive, it's wonderful. Anyway I think TP is designed to be playable on heavy weight keyboards and it may not be controlled well on light weight keyboards. I need to do more tests, but at the moment that is my position.

Woody, The word I've heard is that Pianoteq 6 is miles better quality than Pianoteq 5. I don't have either product but I'm getting very close to spending the price for Pianoteq 6. Do you know if it is true that Pianoteq 6 is much improved? Thanks in advance for any feedback...

I liked more the Pianoteq sound. I'm not an expert, though. Can I play in real time with low latency using a normal PC? I mean, without a dedicated sound card. I want to use Pianoteq mostly for real time playing, so the response time is important to me.
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 8 лет назад
response time (aka latency) is critical if you play in realtime. you don't want any lag. normally you want a studio quality sound card for this with ASIO drivers. But you can download ASIO4ALL which will give you low latency with most built-in sound cards. good luck!
@reyespiano945

I get down to 8 ms latency (the time it takes sound to travel 2.5 meters) with no special equipment - just a built-in soundcard on my 5 year old desktop machine. The CPU - and the CPU cooling - is more important and might be an issue on old laptops. Pianoteq uses a very complex physical model that takes a lot of machine power to run - the computer is literally calculating the sound on the fly - so if your CPU isn't good enough, or overheats, the latency might increase in places with too many fast notes and changing chords.

Owning pianoteq 5 for about half a year I must say, that the sound of it on this video is far below the real quality, which pianoteq can provide.. The sound sample of this video would have never ever triggered me to buy Pianoteq. In this video it sounds artificial, too bright and far off from a good acoustic piano. - Sorry fot that, Woody Piano Shack! Pianoteq 5, combined with my speakers or - even better - with my earphones comes very, very close to a very expensive acoustic kingsize piano and produces superb and very authentic, acoustic piano sound. --- So the disappoining sound quality in this video might be a mic/recording issue. PS: Can´t give an assessment on "Truepiano, since I don´t have it.

that's an interesting comment thanks! i agree that pianoteq sounds fabulous and I think it is captured well on the video. The audio from the VST is exported as a CD quality WAV from my DAW, imported into my video editor and uploaded to youtube. just a sanity check, could it be a playback issue on your device? bad soundcard, earbuds etc? it could also be that i'm using a piano module or a preset that is not what you are used to. hopefully we will get some feedback from other pianoteq users. cheers!

i'm sure pianoteq version that i have contains the same sound engine, just less options to adjust the sound. i think it would sound the same for the presets which I was using.
@DesLysProdArtist
@DesLysProdArtist 7 лет назад
The difference between the Stage and the Pro version are mainly the custom feature. No, the fail of this duel is the midifile, this is not a good way for a test, if you play the piano your mind is not a midifile, you play with your ear and your finger use the piano with this information. So the piano sounding better. I know the two vsti and I can say Pianoteq is better and Truepiano, if is good, is old school now.
@isaacvongurtberg7341
@isaacvongurtberg7341 7 лет назад
Azerlylo I was thinking the same. I am not sure I am correct but the first midi file seems to play like somebody who will push on the piano keys with the same pressure each time.
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 7 лет назад
i take your point. actually, there is a lot of variation in the velocities in this midi file, but all notes have relatively high velocity, some digital pianos can sound a bit harsh when using full range of velocity. so i did another version, with an overall lower average velocity , you will find it on my channel. probably you will prefer this.
@forgottensky
@forgottensky 7 лет назад
Sounds like a not so well recorded midi.. my Pianoteq sounds wayyyyyy better. Of course you need a stellar controller for that.
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 7 лет назад
I am using a midi file that is composed specifically for testing digital pianos. It could be that the velocities in the midi file are higher than your controller produces, which results in a brighter, harsher tone. I'll publish some more pianoteq vids where I use a good controller.
