You are right that Digital is better for short run and customization. You're wrong on cracking. It still does occur with offset. My shop just reprinted 35,000 sheets because of a paper issue that caused cracking. Cracking generally occurs because your score line is against the grain of the paper - or in our case the paper company screwed up and delivered bad paper. Offset does do higher quality - digital is catching up fast. However it has a long way to go before the output of digital matches the efficiency of a high speed offset press.

i have work on all kind of presses offset (heidelber, komori), flexo (neilpeter) and now on a digital press ( carlson) ill say this offset quality is way better than any of them but digital press is by far the best overall but of course for small runs if not it wont be cost effective at all

@Captain Boomer That is still not "hundreds" of years. It also wasn't called "offset". The offset printing as we know it today took it's flight in the 70s, passing letterpress printing as the primary method in the 80s.
@Captain Boomer I know very well what I'm talking about. Lithography is the predecessor of offset printing. I graduated college in printing in 1969 and only then the offset technique using the indirect printing via a blanket cylinder developed rapidly, surpassing letterpress in the 70s. The first Heidelberg offset presses were actually modified letterpress machines, hence paper inlet and delivery on the same side.
My bobst ci press does the same thing at a higher rate of speed. 1300 fpm and nothing but quality. Expanded gamut and proper printing plates is key. You said a metal negative plate. It's been along time since gravure was the only thing that was considered a plate. Now it is really only used for adhesive and metallic inks. I can run a 1,500,000 feet run with a 1000 line screen and still have minimum ware. And I can do that within 20 hours at 50inch wide substrate. My little brother runs digital at multicolor. 150fpm max and the same quality. Same waste. Shit.. you might as well tell people to print their own labels at home on a Canon printer at that rate.

This is a crock. Very biased against digital. It is not true that you cannot print spot (Pantone) colors with digital, HP Indigo has color mixing. Most people will not find it necessary if they utilize up 7 colors with HP Indichrome inks. Being a 40 year print veteran, it is rather comical having a couple of 20 somethings delivering a seminar on Digital V Offset!
