Include this essential step of recording identifying information while you’re digitizing your precious family photos. This way, the information will travel with the digital photo wherever it may go!
Learn how to add descriptive metadata to your photos so you can attach all of the information you know about the people in the photo, their relationships, the reason for the photo (an event? celebration? reunion?), the date and location, and anything that may have been written on the front or back of the original photograph. This is a brief introduction for adding metadata to your digitized photos using PC and Mac.

That was so interesting and extremely helpful. Tags were a closed book to me so seeing how and what you included was perfect. Thank you so much and if I may add a clear explanation too which isn't the case with all channels.

Don’t forget to save ALL information on your family photos when you digitize them! Even if it doesn’t make sense to you yet, you never know what clues the details may eventually reveal. I show you how to keep that information with the digital image once you’ve scanned the physical copy here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A0Bnr7vJp7M.html

Very helpful. Is there a reason you've chosen the .tif format?

I’m so happy to hear that, thank you! Great question, and while it depends on the project at hand, generally if it’s a photo that’s really important to me and I want to capture all of the detail from the original, I will scan as a TIFF to achieve the highest quality image. I go into more detail about that in this video if you’re interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k-QAiJwlj_E.html

Great information. Metadata is overlooked and as can be as important as the scan itself. Please, please, please include the subject’s proper name in the file name and the metadata. Simply using “Uncle Bob’s photo “ will not give future researchers much information as to the person’s identity. Use the family name as well if that suits you. But remember the frustration when the only information on the back of that photo in your collection is “My great grandma”.

Thank you, any additional details are always helpful aren’t they! I’ve definitely experienced that frustration before so I do my best to prevent that by using an ancestor file with their full name, including date of birth and death years where applicable, that holds all of their photos and documents in one place. Hoping that will make it easier for future researchers should they look it over.

I second your appeal. Your job today as a historian is to be working for future historians, and proper names are crucial to the work. "Papa" and "Mom" in the metadata, without detail, is not a kind thing to do to a future owner of these files.

Do you copy the exact metadata for the backside that you did on the front?

It is a pity that there is not horse in that photo with the crying kid. It is a mule, completely different beast.

Ha! A good example of why we shouldn’t take everything written on the back of photos as fact 😂
