It is good to see one of these in use. The answer to everybody asking why the images are soft is as follows. The device is a small camera in a box. The wavelength of light is about 0.5 µm, and it does not get magically shrink when the image on a 24x36 mm film frame is squeezed on to a sensor that is smaller than your little fingernail; it is still 0.5 µm. Thus, it does not matter how many megapixels you have, so long as it is more than enough to represent the image on the sensor, which is likely about 5 megapixels for this kind of device.

Thank you. The company provided a poorly organized and written manual, in minuscule typeface, and I could not find the PDF on their website. Your instructions were clear and thorough.

Man this brings back memories, I had one of these when I started the channel (but under a different, cheaper, sketchier branding) Not only did all my scans look like they came directly out of a dog's ass, but the scanner also had homemade porn saved on it when I took it out of the box. Truly classy

I've got a similar device that I always use for making index prints. And to me just for doing that it's well worth the price. The only thing I find a bit sad is that nobody makes a unit that will handle 120 film and they offer no option to increase bit depth by doing some HDR processing of the images.
@theoldcameraguy
@theoldcameraguy Год назад
A similar device for medium format would be pretty cool
@cdl0
@cdl0 Год назад
HDR would likely not be possible, owing to the small size of the pixels on the sensor. The digital quantization limit, in terms of significant bits per pixel from the analogue to digital converter, is determined by the charge on an electron, the wavelength of light, and Planck's constant. See also my comment on optical resolution.
@tonyb2760

I was noticing how fast the scan was and thinking that it can not possibly capture all the detail of a flatbed scanner. Thanks for sharing
@theoldcameraguy
@theoldcameraguy Год назад
Yes - it sacrifices some detail for speed
@amdfanatyk
@amdfanatyk Год назад
I have tested several of such so called "scanners". In fact they are digital cameras with rather low image resolution. Apart from quite poor image quality also film holders are problematic since they tend to heavily scratch negatives. Finally I ended up with Plustek OpticFilm 8200i since nothing cheaper met my expectations of highest image quality possible. This real scanner produces images of quality at least as good as professional photo lab scanner.
@cdl0
@cdl0 Год назад
Thank you: Good to know that the Plustek works well.
@amdfanatyk
@amdfanatyk Год назад
@@cdl0 main disadvantage of 8200i is that IR scan has too low resolution to detect all flaws on negative surface.
@cdl0
@cdl0 Год назад
@@amdfanatyk Your main enemy is dust. Most is from your clothing, so remove as much as possible. IR defect detection will only work for colour (or chromogenic monochrome) film, not conventional black-and-white.
@amdfanatyk
@amdfanatyk Год назад
@@cdl0 I shoot only color film.
@cdl0
@cdl0 Год назад
@@amdfanatyk Interesting. I wonder what IR wavelength is used. It is possible that this will limit the resolution for defect detection. Also, at these scales, a defect on the film base will be slightly out of focus, and thus spread over a greater area than on on the emulsion side.

Thanks very much for this video. Very helpful. My only concern is the SD card. I have an ACER Chromebook and I'm sure that the SD Slot in the computer is smaller than the SD card shown in the video. If so, will be able to transfer the picture files to the computer?
@theoldcameraguy
@theoldcameraguy Год назад
You can get an inexpensive USB card reader and insert the SD card into that (and plug the card reader into a USB port on your computer)
@AndrewWaltonPhotography
@AndrewWaltonPhotography Год назад
We often get similar devices popping up as special offers at some of the UK's supermarkets but unlike this one they're even lower resolution - often as low as 5mp files. This sounds much better at 14mp. I wonder if the lack of sharpness would be noticeable when scanning images from family point and shoot cameras from the 50s and 60s some have particularly soft lenses.
@cdl0
@cdl0 Год назад
The softness would likely be noticeable, and you would not be able to see the film grain, which is part of the charm of film. See my comment on optical resolution.

So I just tried using this scanner for my 35mm slides and have run into a problem. Many of my slides were taken with the camera rotated 90 degrees. This camera says it can mirror and flip the images, however I have not seen that. If I try a slide where the image has been rotated 90 and I rotate the slide itself--that won't work because of the bright bands on either side of the image. If I put the slide in normally with an image on the left side for example I can mirror it or flip it but the image still stays on the left or right side but never centered Am I doinfg something wrong? All I want to do is basically rotate the image 90 degrees

I've had major issues with the DIGITNOW All-In-One Film Scanner right from the time I opened the box. Others have written that you get what you pay for. I understood that when I purchased a relatively inexpensive piece of equipment. However, I didn't even get that. The instructions are lacking. There is no relevant troubleshooting guide. The Digitnow site is only for sales. There's nothing helpful there. After a few uses, the screen remained white without the menu not showing up. I've wasted money and time with this purchase.
