"Zag heth czhagis phalila mallei, ( I have changed it from the rendition by Mr. Hafiz) wash kudd zulffan shaannou seeth. he posh dannei beyi masvallie, Bo ballie channei deedar e seeth." If we have to understand ' Sufi kalam', we must also understand how Sufi mystics are able to create the 'kalam'. We usually think that it is intuitive knowledge, which means that the kalam is poured into their heart ( consciousness) mysteriously and they speak it out. Intuition is okay but it is a state that mystics experience. During that intuitive experience, which in the mystic language we call ' Haal', they are very creative. This means that they can express their ideas with great perfection and finesse either in the shape of poetry, prose, art, sport, music, discoveries, or inventions. So, Faqirs, poets, musicians, singers, scientists, naturalists, sportspersons have always that mystic touch. Our great mystics like Naem Saeb, Amir Khusro, A.R.Rehman, Einstein, Messe, Boxer Ali, and so many others have that mystic element in their creativity. But remember that creativity is the product of your intuitive knowledge plus your own observation, skills, and experience. You can not express your creativity without your personal observation, experience, and skill. That is why, most of our Faqirs, Rishis, saints could not do mystic shayiri . They could perform miracles but not mystic poetry. Now, with this background knowledge in mind, let us analyze the quatrain (a stanza of four lines) reproduced from Naem Saeb's kalam above. The lines written are not dictated to him by any mysterious or hidden force but are a product of his own observation and experience in life. What is intuitive about kalam is that Naem Saeb in his state or ' Haal ' is highly intoxicated with spiritual enlightenment (mast) that takes him to a tour of Hazratbal Shrine of our beloved Prophet (saw), where he first goes to 'Yarbal' the bank of the Dal lake, washes his hands and face (Wadu) and then proceeds to the shrine and pays obeisance. After making his obeisance he approaches ' Aam Khas,. Aam Khas is found at all shrines in Kashmir. This is a small sacred place at the entry of every shrine, where you have some water or dried soil, which you usually rub your hands with and then rub your soiled hands on your face ( Khak malei royus Aam Khas tallei). I used to do it at the shrine of Makhdoom Sahib. Then he offers Nimaz at the gate and looks for some kind of mystic union with the Prophet (saw). Coming back to the quatrain, he says; After having a heartful ' deedar' of your 'zulf' , I shall rub flavored oil on it. Spread open your hair with the movement of your shoulders. All flowers, such as; ' he- posh' and 'masvallei' will bloom all around and I will be cured with your Deedar. You see, why I said, it is the experience of observation of mystics that speaks, A mystic, who apparently looks simple, unaware, unmindful of the objective beauty around, is a deception. Mystics are the most aware people. It is their awareness that makes them mystics. When they see something, they see much more than what we see in an appearance and that is how they can give worldly similes to explain mystic experiences or expressions. A mystic in his state of calm- eyes closed- can hear the sound of the falling needle from a distance. That is their level of awareness. So, be careful to behave in presence of a real mystic. He can pick up all your pranks. Spreading Zulf with the movement of shoulders is a very rare phenomenon. Normally the hair is moved with hands. I have practically observed moving the hair with shoulders in a 'Majazi' experience.
