Per records, between 1986 to 88 Vengsarkar stood as No# 1 batsman among the likes of greats like Richards, Martin Crow, Gavaskar, Miandad, Border etc...and through 80's he was among leading Indian batsman. He commented on BCCI through an article and was banned for 6 months sometime in 1988. After that his captaincy didnt click which impacted his batting and eventually his position in the team .. and he took a retirement in 1992, probably 2 years before time... Irrespective, one of the best batsmen India ever had..

Vensarkar was one of our best bastman in 80's he retired quite early could have played 2/3 years of international i remember this series i think we where unbeaten till final

The match scenario was so much like the 83 wc final and whole india were just hoping they will see history repeat in their home ground..just the result was different this time
Dilip Vengsarkar likes to play straight always..Hence he lost captaincy and the place.He is a gem and decent fella… Retired quickly and silently without making scene. His coaching academy is grooming lot of youngsters. In those days he is one of the few who can score fast… His strokes are handsome and joy to watch

I watched this match live in DD. It was a great innings from Vengsarkar. there were some verbals between him and one of the windies pace bowler and umpire had to be involved :-). but i still remember those shots played by him...
Still remember this one, thought India had a winning score but West Indies won this easily. Richards played superbly after Vengsarkar had played the best innings of the tournament.
Had the 1983 World Cup legends Dilip Vengasarkar and Kapil Dev played 1996 World Cup instead of Match Fixers Mohammed Azharuddin and Manoj Prabhakar then India would have won the final match of the mega tournament instead of loosing miserably to Sri Lanka in the semi final match by 98 runs.
Kapil Dev and Shahid Afridi both could have scored almost 50% more runs than what they scored had they been more responsible in middle. They did not justify their batting talent
Very rarely he has won matches for India, his only achievement in 15 years is 100 against weak and mediocre English bowling. Couldn't prove his metal against WI, Pakistan or Australia. Kapil was a far better batsman then this nepotistic Mumbaikar who only backed cricketers from Maharashtra. If no Kapil this guy would have been a nonentity. Puckka Waste
