It is been a while since the last time I post a dim sum recipe. Just in case you don’t know what dim sum is. It is a Cantonese style brunch that people normally enjoy with tea. It is a variety of food that is prepared as small portions and served in a bamboo steamer or on a small plate. I am a super fan of dim sum. I have a playlist of all the dim sum recipes that I love. I will put the link in the description. You can check it out later. But now I am going to show you another classic - Cantonese turnip cake. I know it sounds weird. But this is a dim sum staple. So let’s get started.

That’s great. Thanks. I make it the same way too but I omit any wheat starch and use just rice flour. I just julienne and don’t dice to daikon. Lots of “liew”. I limit that because as you say it gets expensive. I sometimes also cut them in half inch cubes and coat them in tapioca powder and then deep fry. After deep frying I wok fry it with bean sprouts and XO sauce.

I love this channel. This recipe took a ridiculous amount of cooking pots/woks and "set aside" bowls. The chopping was what I expected. The steaming setup was onerous. I don't eat "meat" so I only included the dried scallops and shrimp. There were so any pots, pans, dishes, etc to wash - this recipe is a TON of work. The taste was delicious. I still have to slice, wrap, and freeze the excess. Definitely make a large batch, as she suggests, as there is a lot of effort to put into this.

Hey there Mandy, recently I've been watching many of your vids. So yesterday I've attempted this recipe....two thumps up!!! Your recipe is true to your measurements, no hidden ingredients! I like the texture and firm enough that it doesn't stick to the pan. It's an all day snack. Love your work, keep it up!!! ☺️

I tried this over the weekend and WOW... better than restaurant! I couldn't find dried shrimp and scallop so I had to substitute 50g of fresh each... I used your Souped Up Recipe's wok and good thing I did because this recipe makes a lot! We had dim sum this morning (steamed Sui Mai and Wontons - both your recipes) with this pan fried Turnip Cake and it was so delicious! Green tea, as you suggested, made the whole meal very authentic. Family was very happy! Thanks for all your amazing recipes, Mandy... you're a star!

After days of researching which Lo Bak Gao recipe to try, I decided on yours. Months ago, my mom 'taught' me the way her mom taught her. My problem is that #1, I didn't write it down, #2, She used no measurements. I can't work like that LOL! So..It came down to you and me yesterday. The only 'change' I made was that I didn't have the patience to julienne the the daikon, so I used the biggest grater I had and shredded the daikon into large shreds. Oh. And I bought too much daikon, so I had to double the recipe. That made me really nervous! When all was done, and I fried a batch (I ended up with 4 baking tins - enough to save for Chinese New Year), my mom declared it better than hers. I have to ask her to show me her way again. I'd like to see if I can incorporate any of her method/ingredients into your method in order to keep some of my traditional family essence in the recipe. Thanks very much. Sorry for this long review.

I knew you would have this recipe! I am stoked, this is one of my favorite dishes and I have 4 pounds of turnip I need to do something with. I love you by the way, you are as cute as a button. You know what would be a cool video? How to put on a mini-banquet at home. 5 or 6 dishes that one person could reasonably cook and serve at about the same time and get to eat with your guests. A couple of little cheats to help you through it, like buying the duck and having a good brand of frozen pancakes, what you could cook that would take the same amount of time as a poached chicken so 2 or three things could come out together. Dishes that might leave you with a stock for soup. The order to serve in, noodles last, fish third…that kind of thing. I’ve tried a New Years celebration that had 6 dishes…it was tricky and I spent more time cooking instead of drinking and eating with everyone….but I noticed that everyone wanted to watch me make the fried rice, chaffing dishes were very helpful and a hot plate at the table was also useful in keeping the “flow” going… I’m sure you get the idea. Oh, and what types of dishes should you serve, one chicken, one noodle and so on. I remember getting yelled at for serving jook/congee at New Years- kind of a bummer since it is one of my favorite things…I make it at least once a month on average. Thanks Mindy 😊
