Here is the story, meaning of the song and how the idea came about. By the way with this song Dimash broke a myth on MTV on Request Fridays. First video to be No.1 without being interpreted in English. It was also the first video directed by Dimash An incredibly deep in content, full of tragedy and sincere hope, and an emotionally piercing musical composition… In essence, the song “Qairan Elim” is like a prayer in which Dimash shares his personal experiences, his anxiety about the fate of his homeland and the whole world. For the most part, the idea was influenced by the coronavirus epidemic, which hit humanity and claimed millions of lives around the world. The melody of the song came to composer Renat Gaissin one early July morning, in a recording studio, during a break between recordings, when he was leafing through the news feed. With each news read, the composer’s feelings became more and more unbearable - they, like reports from the war, were filled with information about the number of new people infected and died due to the coronavirus. And, as if in a sad background in my head, the musical theme began to sound more and more clearly… Putting the phone down, Renat went up to his musical instrument and began to play a melody that suddenly, like a flash, came to his mind. A few minutes later Dimash approached Renat and asked him to play it again. After listening to the melody from beginning to end, the performer, being deeply impressed, said that he really wanted to sing it. The melody was shown to the sound producer, Yerlan Bekchurin, and he wrote an arrangement for it. From that moment on, work on the song began. “The song “Qairan Elim” is a message and a call to all people for good, positive thoughts. The belief that we will definitely overcome everything and cope with all ailments. The main thing is to believe in it and remain strong,” Renat Gaissin and Dimash commented. The video was shot in the picturesque places of Almaty region. The directors were Dimash himself and the cameraman Azamat Dulatov. Shooting the video was easy, without any hiccups. The whole team was so inspired by the work that they neglected sleep and rest, which resulted in the filming being completed in record time. “When I first heard this composition, I immediately liked its subtle and very competent message. And, of course, I gladly took upon the work. The whole filming process went very smoothly. Everyone here was filled with inspiration. I am sincerely grateful to every specialist who contributed to this project. Our editing director, Timur Dulatov, hit the mark by building the composition according to his inner feelings, and making a very beautiful picture as a result. The talented Yerlan Tanaev did the magic-color correction. Color was very important for us, as we wanted the mood of the song to reach every viewer. We put our soul into each shot. I hope that fans of Dimash’s work will like our work” - Azamat Dulatov shared. Greetings from Panamá.
The song is called «OH, MY SACRED LAND» («QAIRAN ELIM»). Dimash sings in Kazakh. The song is dedicated not only to Dimash's homeland - Kazakhstan, but also to the entire planet Earth. Earth is the birthplace of all humanity. The ancient Kazakh instrument KOBYS has two strings and makes mystical sounds. When Dimash "burns" it means that his soul can "burn" for the sake of the Motherland. Blood runs, it means that you can shed blood for the Motherland. When a pianist dies, it means that only death can make a real musician stop making music. It's an allegory. Filming took place in Kazakhstan. THIS SONG IS PRAYER! Prayer for our land, for the people, for our children: "The universe, help humanity!". /// Before the song, the older narrator (but it's not Dimash's voice) speaks: «The Great Steppe! Ek loof jou genade lande. I praise your vast expanses from Altai to Atyrau, from Yayi to Ili, from Alatau to Saryarka. They are silent witnesses to my happy times. I praise the Great Steppe, the cradle of the mighty Turkic world. Hey, silent world! Don't be silent, holding your breath. There are descendants behind you. Nothing stopped them in times of severe litigation and contractions. The Great Steppe has generous masters who have not broken down or exhausted before the dodgy temper of the fickle world. Their hearts are magnanimous and the souls are noble. They have a patron, about whom no stranger and whom no stranger feels».
I LOVE what you said about Dimash being so "precise, so careful, but so BOLD" with his vocals. Well said! He's like the master painter who's skill is so perfected, he can now break all of the rules as he sees fit with stunning results. And he does! He's BRAVE with his choices... never seen anything like it.
This song came out when lock down was in the beginning. Its a prayer for his country and the world. Dimash lost two teachers to Covid-19.They were not only teachers but they were friends and mentors to him. One teacher he was really close to and he sang a song in tribute to him the name is Qaragym Ai and you can see the pain in his eyes . Don’t do the one from the Digital show there is another with just him and a man playing the piano. It’s beautiful and heart wrenching.Thank you for your reaction and waiting for your next.
Totally agree. That performance in Oct'20, was powerful. HIs pain was piercing, and every moment was tense with sadness, yet so beautiful to witness. He and the pianist, both former students, created magic, and i"m sure their teacher would have been proud of them.
Beautiful sentiments shared. I think the thesis of this song is to be found in the fact that Kazakhstan is the land of the Kazaks. Dimash is Kazakh and that people endured annexation, war, and famine, through centuries including through Csarist Russian annexation and then Communist russia as part of the USSR only gaining their full independence and autonomy in the 1990's with its fall. They've recently been enduring political strife, a high COVID toll last year, and so .. this song comes from that place of reverence and deep respect for where they've been and that they should remember who they are, take heart, rally, and overcome. I think that's what it is.
This song was inspired by the pandemic. Dimash lost a couple of his beloved mentors, who were also artists, to COVID, and he was grieving. The dying pianist symbolizes the artists who died. I strongly suggest to also review the live performance of this song on the Digital Show. Dimash's lives are even more amazing and emotional than his studio versions.
The piano player wrote this song. Fluffys Mum wrote 6 months ago (edited)Yes the song is all original, Dimash lives in a very traditional family and adheres to cultural values. He is a massive patriot and always performs a patriotic song for all the countries cultural holidays 🇰🇿 the instrument is a Qobyz an ancient 5,000 year old traditional Kazakh two stringed cello type instrument, no fingerboard and the strings don't touch the neck part. The bow is also held by the end and the strings which is unusual and it often is played to make the sounds of animals, the weather, as well as making incredibly beautiful music. The strings for nothing the qobyz and the bow were traditionally made of plaited horsehair. This isnt the Chinese erhu thats a different instrument altogether, the qobyz is made from one piece of wood where the erhu is made in a drumlike fashion with snakeskin stretched over Dimash is big on symbolism and him being on fire symbolises his soul on fire for his people, his sacred land of Kazakhstan, the blood is the blood shed by his people, Kazakhstan has had a very turbulent past, the start of the video wasshowing some of the fighting that went on to defend their people and land. It means so much to him 🇰🇿 at the end the sun rising over the mountains and the colour coming back to the film, not sure if you noticed tbe muted, washed out colour scheme, shows hope for a bright future. Kazakhstan only got their independence in 1991 so its a very new country now, very modern but they still, hold onto their nomadic past and culture its very dear to them. The pianist dying was a nod to covid, Dimash lost two of his university teachers who were very close to him
The instrument is the cobyz/kobyz, Dimash has said the gentleman playing it, is the best in the world on this instrument. Did u notice the last note was one of hope for the future, and the sky lightened as they rode above the mountains brining hope. Dimash and his team created this video with Dimash directing it (1st time he directed a film) . I love this film. He has developed a stage performance of this too, which is very powerful, but this is my favourite to watch and listen to. Cheers
I came back to you. I answered negatively to your sos 2021 digital concert version. You had said that Dimash was not as emotional as your two female artist you react to. Your answer was that you didn’t appreciate the song that it wasn’t for you. The thing about sos is what it means to Dimash. It’s his signature song that he sings at all his concerts. France brought him there to sing at the Cannes Film Festival in Nice. The words are about a person that doesn’t feel comfortable in their own skin. The person is questioning his immortality and may commit suicide tho those words don’t come out in the song. Dimash has been singing it since he was fifteen. I gave you a like and cae back to allow myself to see you in a different light. The flames and the blood are the future destruction of his holy land he speaks of pollution ad everything. As the camera goes over the moauntain a green landscape is seen with other colors as the music documentary video was in black and white. The color came with the blood-red flames yellow fire. Thanx for your reaction and fr your Christian words.
I’ve felt on fire while in intense prayer when going through a very trying time in life. (Abusive marriage.). I felt the fire signified the intensity of his prayer for peace and an end to the destruction of the world’s beauty. I felt when the pianist passed away it was depicting the destruction of the beauty in the world. (Just my personal impression of this song.) ❤️ It also showed me that whatever one’s faith, we are more as one family than a lot of people realize. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for your reaction! The song is partly inspired by the pandemic. It's a prayer for Dimash' s homeland. The images of blood, fire and death express the pain and grief of the people imho. The video and the song remind of past adversities, which the Kazakh people have been through and survived, and call for resilience and hope, ending with the theme of the phoenix risen from the ashes, the sun rising and the black and white landscape turning in color.
There is a Qazaq saying "Even if you have to walk through fire and flame out of love for your Homeland, the flame can't consume you nor burn you". In this MV Dimash tried to show us to stand tall when faced any hardship of life. Thank you for your reaction, Larry! Greetings and Love from Qazaqstan!
What I really love, is that every note is equally important and intentional. No matter if it's a big showstopper note or a little note during a verse..he treats them with equal care. It makes for a really intense experience, imo
Hello Dimash is the best, he transmits those emotions as perfectly as with his voice. I read out there, what it is about, the part of the pianist, and the fire, of what human beings can do, destroy, all the beauty in the world, everything that is precious to us. It is very sad indeed. But true .
One thing i have found with Dimash is a lot of his music video's have a very profound meaning or message behind them but every one of them is amazing especially those concerning his homeland
Thanks for another great reaction video. The instrument in question is an ancient Kazakh instrument called a Kobyz. It was performed by the talented Olzhas Qurmanbek whom Dimash calls the best kobyz player. FYI, Olzhas Qurmanbek played the kobyz again at Dimash's recent Stranger performance at New Wave Sochi. Here's the English translation of the introductory narration. Qairan Elim (Oh My Holy Land), read by Yisbek Abilmazhinov. English translation: Anna Ludwig-k The Great Steppe. I am speaking of the land which spreads across the four directions. I am speaking of the Altai mountains and the region of Atyrau, the rivers Zhaiyk and Ile, the Alatau mountain range and the Saryarka Uplands, about the finest vast lands of all time. I am speaking of the Great Steppe, the cradle of the Turkic realm, which gave rise to the nomads. O silent world, do not hold your breath inside! You have a generation who boldly withstood the struggle, A kind owner with a generous soul and a compassionate character, constant against the dark transgressions of a changing world. The Great Steppe has a guardian spirit, unknown to a stranger, incomprehensible to an outsider. Translation source: Dimash USA Translations Team
I don’t think he did, not many reactors notice it. Makes you wonder. Lack of focus, not watching the screen or they just really uninterested in the whole experience of this production. I don’t know. 🤔
🎧👍🇷🇴🇰🇿 Kobyz (instrument), also played in "Stranger"... and Kazakh language... 🤓 Thoughts: 1. That fire in the videoclip... I see it like a purification way... If you escape of it, you are purified... 2. Most of Dimash's songs follow this recipe: they start slowly, in low notes/registers and slightly evolve into high notes/registers till a climax... 3. All his shows and videoclips are veryyy good, spectacular, original... He made his own musical production company (DimashAli), with a few relatives of him, his dad et caetera ( I realized that reading the details of production on his videoclips). This allowed him to make expensive videoclips and according to his own tastes. You will see this in his other videoclips, live shows. 4. The kobyz/piano player is a good friend of him (you saw him also in "Stranger", on the stage...). I forgot his name, it's a Kazakh one, of course, and still hard to remember for me... For sure, he is mentioned on the videoclip and deserves to be memorized. 🤗 5. Since you have already reacted to "Stranger", I would kindly ask you to have a look at this "Bass singer's reaction" to Dimash... It is a very good, professional reaction, that could more enlight you about Dimash's extraordinary skills and techniques (as well as he also enlighted me 🤓). I see you have a lot of information about the musical "field" and I hope this recommendation doesn't offend you 🙏... For neither I or you are singers or vocal coaches or musicians and we could learn from professionals... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f7uXDlgN4Lw.html No need to react to it! P. S. You said you were Christian, so did I (Ortodox, like 80% of Romanians). Fun fact: Dimash is Muslim.
My impression is that this piece links the Nation's trials with it current trials and offers a message of hope that they will be overcome, as they have been in the past. It is, perhaps worth noting that Dimash lost two very important mentors to COVID 19. His video, Qaragym-Ay, that was released about a year ago, is a heartbreaking tribute to his professor of composition. It is so personal that maybe you should just watch it, not react. There is a more recent version of the same song that is in a different context.
Please react to Dimash’s mini film, Story of One Sky. The official video. He composes this and it took him 3 yrs to write it. He also acts in it…the message is the most important thing
Lovely reaction as usual, I know you mentioned you play guitar, strings.... Dimash has a video River of Love which is an actual studio recording of him playing the Dombra, I think you will enjoy it, he equally puts as much emotion playing the instrument as if he was singing.... The pianist who burns in this video accompanies him with a keyboard on this one... check it out, even if you don't react to it.
PS. I saw a different, longer version on stage, with more videos of wars, and it was explained. The country has been thru misery after misery, and he is mourning the deaths of so many while praying for his country's future. 👍👍 You'll have to look for the other one...
That string instrument it's a Kobys and the genteman that play the instrument is the world best player of the kobys. Some people say that this old instrument has the strings made with horse hair, and could imitated the sounds of animals and sounds of natural world.
Beautiful, it gives meaning to me. We live in a world where disasters are spreading like flames in dry grass. I know we are many who worries about where we are heading with all this. Still there is hope and we have to hang on to it and believe that the good will survive all evil and destruction. Thanks for your great reaction. My love to you all. Ann from Norway
One must understand the history of the country, the wars, the Russian occupation since the czars and the Soviet Union, and now independence. Hundreds of year enduring, tempered by fire and quenched in blood. Samaltau speaks of a young man taken from his family by the occupation to serve as a foot soldier in a foreign war, perhaps never to return to see his homeland and parents. He's very passionate of his homeland and people. Far beyond our idea of patriotism in America. Given that the founders of the USA are the occupiers/invaders. Such a song would be through the eyes of Native-Americans, or Black descendants of Slavery.
For me, It is about the sacrifice they made in the independence of Kazakhstan from the Soviet Union (The Great Purge) There is a terrible past in that country, which achieved peace only a few decades ago, I think 25 years or so.
As English I find the Patriotism of others very strange. "Patriotism, the last refuge of the Scoundrel" comes to mind. I like my country and I am very critical of it, especially now. This was a beautiful piece and the landscapes superb. The variety in this world, land, country, people, this is what we all should celebrate.
I enjoyed watching your reaction to Dimash's beautiful but sad song "Qairan Elim" and thank you for your thoughtful comments! 👍And I noticed so many intelligent comments left for you. They are amazing! Dimash's fans are very intelligent people, they not only enjoy his amazing songs but also understands where he is coming from with his performances, study his Kazakh culture, Kazakh history, for better understanding Dimash and his art and his thoughts. I am amazed about those comments! Dimash is amazing and his fans are amazing as well! 👍😃
I've heard this song many, many times but never realized the interesting observation you made about the octaves being played on the Kobyz instrument. It looks like a very challenging instrument to play. Did you notice that the strings never touch the wood neck? The notes are created from the pressure of his fingers on the wide strings and the bow. I think the loose, wide strings give it that full rich sound instead of a single string. Thanks for your reaction.
To me it shows the trials and tribulations his homeland has been through and the sacrifices in lives it has made. The sun coming out at the end suggests that the sacrifices were worth it. ♥️
Since I became a Dear, I’ve been fascinated by anything Kazakh. I read up on the history of Kazakhstan and understand what he was trying to express. This people have survived an amazingly turbulent history, especially during the Soviet era. This proud nomadic population was forced to settle into communes, then their land was used for nuclear experiments. Their young men and women were drafted into the Soviet Army to fight in far away lands. About 4/5 of the population died. The inept regime diverted water flowing into the Caspian Sea, formerly the world’s largest inland sea, causing it to dry up and shrink to 1/10 its original size. Finally, their big break came when the Soviet Union collapsed and the present country was born. Yet, suddenly Covid-19 happened and again people started dying. Dimash ends with the horizon lighting up the world with color, meaning there’s always hope. I hope you noticed in the opening credits that he co-directed this piece.
Dear Larry, I remember your first reation and actually, you were a bit in shock and not fully convinced :) what I liked was the fact that you persisted, you continued to listen to more of his songs, to see this young man's incredible versatility, his creativeness. I admit, his music is not everybody's cup of tea. But in diving in, most people who love art and music fall for him, Dears call it 'dimashification' LOL I am glad you are getting close :)) Thank you also for your interpretation and your thoughts on the lyrics, I am sure you will get tons of different interpretations, but that's OK, whatever it means for everbody individually. Dimash's ideas and those of the creative team around him can best be taken from his channel Dimash.News. cheers from Vienna!
The only words I could find to describe how I felt when I first watched and listened to Qairan Elim: Emotionally piercing. Apart from the stunning visuals, the excellent production, everything was spot on -no need to talk about his voice, especially at his lower range, where he masterfully used those breathy sounds and the cracking at his voice... This whole project is so deep in meaning and emotions, here Dimash is not THE singer, is a human being praying for the fate of his country and the whole world. For the most part, the inspiration for the song was the covid pandemic (Dimash has lost dear friends and beloved teachers and mentors, Larry I think you have already reacted to Qaragym Ai which was a tribute to his mentor), but I believe he also speaks about the hardships his country has gone through so far, the wars and opression, and through his prayer he really hopes for a better future. You can see that at the closing scene, where the almost grey filters give their place to some colors on the mountains, the rays of sun and you can hear the birds singing. As for the fire (and the piano player that fells to the river), I think it's one of the most heartbreaking scenes, to me the meaning is that people try (or should try) to save what's pure and closest to God and human soul till their last breath (using the Art and Music as a symbol of beauty and purity). As for Dimash being on fire (what a shocking scene, we all gasped at that I think), I believe it could have many meanings, but I chose the Phoenix meaning. Although he is buning, he stays alive and survives the flames and maybe this represents his country or his hope for human race in general. Thanks for a great reaction, love and peace from Athens, Greece.
I would love to see a reaction to Ikanaide! And also: Love is like a dream, Stranger and Ave Maria! And if you want to see something different; Be with me
This WAY Dimash IS... Walking towards us...Arms loaded with ALL he has !!! I CAN'T RESIST !!... Till August 2018. THANKS James (not 100% sure of your name) for your very interesting reaction!! Greetings from Quebec City, Canada .
Is Daybreak/Bastau consert or Autumn strong/ Singer 2017 or Couldn't leave or Marigold Your next Reaction? All these songs are very emotional, but by different way as this song.
The violence at the end of the song depicts the fierce struggle of Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 to fight for over 200 years, to only gain their freedom in 1991. The history of Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 is amazing and inspiring to all who are oppressed in the world today. The faithful will be redeemed here or after death. 🙏 Thank you for your appreciation and kind comments for Dimash and his music. ❤ Your review was wonderful. If you haven't listened/watched "Samal Tau" yet, this is another one that I sincerely recommend. Is is a true story/song, penned by an unknown author/soldier during the war of 1916. Pull up the English translation. If they are not available with the song, you can Google the song for the translation. There are three very inspirational versions that I hope you watch. "Samal Tau" during Dimash's Online Digital Concert and "Samal Tau" for the Tokyo Jazz Festival in 2020. Also "Samal Tau" commemorating the history of the"The Silk Road". Thank you for your great understanding and review of "Qairan Elem". Hope to see you again soon. ❤
Dimash is the King!! Since you're reacting to the king, I think it's time to discover the Queen, SoHyang, South Korean singer, who decided to sing only for God and people comfort! You can start with her " You raise me up cover from Immortal Songs" where she was suffering from Pneumonia!! Greetings from Lebanon🇱🇧!
Thank you so much for this review. I also very much appreciate the information provided by your listeners. You provide not only your musical critique but informative comment about Dimash and his songs. xoxoxo Suzie
I have to admit - many times you have managed surprised me with spotting something which skipped my attention or you payed attention to something, a detail, which I did not yet after you did it, it immediately appeared to be of high significance (even if in many cases it is about some nuances). Like here with seeing that the strings have different shape or that he is able to reach to different octaves without doing something obvious. Your reactions have already made me see many songs in a completely new light. Interesting... :)
Russia brutally used the Kazaks/Cossacks. They used their men to fight their battles for them. Long, deadly, bloody wars being forced to fight a land that is not yours. The Cossacks are known for their brutality, but they were forced into those actions and were desperately trying to gat back home. In 1991, Russia gave Kazakhstan their freedom along with 15 other countries they had controlled. These 16 nations became republics. In 1994, Dimash was born and as per Kazak tradition of him being the first born son of his parents, his father's parents took Dimash as their child and raised him the first 10 years of his life. They were still a people shaken by the horrific wars and shared the atrocities thrust on their land for long years. This has never left Dimash. He is a deep lover of his land and as you said, is highly patriotic. Kazakhstan is 82% Muslim but as i describe Dimash, he is a "Reformed" Muslim in the same sense that I would say that there is a group of Christians who are reformed. He fully believes that Alla has chosen him and that he is to do his best to please him. Dimash is highly philanthropic but will not discuss it when asked about his giving. Others have let his giving out. Recently, when in an interview, he was asked about his giving and he was uneasy to agitated. He said his country has a quote about giving, "We are not to let our right hand know what our left had does. LOL! I do not think he had any idea it was a quote from Jesus, but he believes and practices it fully. I have read stories but have ceased sharing them because it goes against his desires that those generous gifts be kept a secret. His family actually has a family moto. "The Family Where Love Reigns". They are a beautiful, close knit family. His Name, Diamsh Ali means Gift from Alla
Thank you, waiting for more reactions to Dimash's performances! Kobyz sounds so mystical... In “Qairan Elim” Dimash shares his personal experiences, his anxiety about the fate of his homeland and the whole world.
Hi, I'm a french canadian. Sorry for my bad english. In many songs of Dimash, I tell myself, Dimash is only 27 and he sings and talks like he is 70. How many singers think of subjects like him? The young singers doen't sing song about the subjects like this one. He sings about life, love, children, our planet, the war & peace, etc. That's why I love him so much. He said so many things in interviews, I can't tell you all about him. I'm 67, sick and alone. Dimash is my sun for 4 years, and eveyday for 4-5 hours. So, tks, take care from Montreal, Quebec, Canada
👉 Here is playing the best Kobys player in the world, Dimash’s friend Olzhas Qurmanbeck. This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak. The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the prototype of all European string instruments. (Turkic means: The Turkic peoples are a collection of ethnic groups from Central, East, North and West Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa who speak Turkic languages.) A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. In addition, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music. The old outlook and piety towards their instruments and music was constantly preserved in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Simple people, for example, did not dare to touch the shaman's Kobyz. It is said: The balance between the courses of life and death on earth can be maintained by playing the Kobyz. 🌼🇩🇪
Going back to the tempering through fire to make us stronger, going through the COVID deaths, especially early on. The pianist was the composer and wrote this when he was very very depressed due to the deaths everywhere. Dimash learned of this and collaborated. The color of coming back shows the hope for the future. This song shows hope for his beloved country, the world and each of us as humanity. I love this beautiful song and Dimash’s interpretation!
Dimash includes a lot of symbolism in his songs, you have to understand the history and culture of Kazakhstan which is long, painful and bloody. They have a very different mindset which is hard for Americans to understand as they have never suffered what his people have been through over the centuries. You would have to take some time to research this huge and beautiful countries history, its fascinating and heartbreaking. As all native Kazakhs are direct descendants of Gengis (Chinggis) Khan they are very strong people and after surviving these terrible things they can survive anything. Alga Dimash 💖
My opinion may be a bit simplistic but I think the brutal imagery is meant to represent his message earlier in the song, that difficulties temper us. That it ended going into a green valley with brighter colors than anything before to me suggests that same message, that it makes you stronger, troubles come and times pass and things will be better in the end. Hope despite true tribulation.
Ikanaide (in japanese) as a virtual performance in Tokyo Jazz festival or amazing new version of Stranger in Shine Super Brothers--TV program in China would be perfect to react to.
