Samaltau, in English Mountain Breeze, is one of my favorite songs, it is a true story beautifully performed by Dimash and the Kazakh traditional instrumentation -Kobyz and Sybyzgy-takes you to that place and time of the song. I love the rendition for the Tokyo Jazz Festival in 2020 during the pandemia, Dimash from his home studio, he was sitting crossed legged and accompanied by two musicians and their traditional instruments. This a tresure song of kazakhstan and Dimash sing this like no one. Quobyz (ko bish) is a 2 stringed ancient Kazakh, Nomad instrument, and pressure applied on the horsehair bow controls the sounds and musical notes. China, Russia and other Eastern cultures have similar instruments.

The dombyra shares certain characteristics with the komuz and dutar, such as its long, thin neck and oblong body shape. The Kobyz (co-biz) or kylkobyz (keel-co-biz) is an ancient Turkic bowed string instrument, spread among Kazakhs, Karakalpaks, Bashkirs, and Tatars. The Kyrgyz variant is called the kyl-kyyak. The qobyz has two strings made of horsehair. The resonating cavity is usually covered with goat leather.

"Samal Tau" (Mount Samal) is the song of those recruits because it was the name of the place where they came from. The song and the performance are great but I prefer the version of the Tokyo Jazz festival. I think the keyboard is ruining it for me here..
