Eminence eventually sold the speakers they had built for these cabs, they probably kept em 10 years then sold them. They went for like 17$ per speakers close to 2010-2012
I think that people underestimate how important Rex’s bass was to that overall sound. Yeah his articulation got buried in the mix sometimes, but it was still part of the thickness.
They all fed of each other. They were basically a super group from the getgo. Dime and Vinnie with the groove, Dime and Rex with the tone, and Phil with the testosterone and heavy lyrics.
Rex and Dime were a unit. It’s so great to see Dime walk up to Rex on stage and hype him up and then they break out and start jamming. Fucking awesome. Talk about chemistry, not all bands have a happy ending but this band had an immaculate lineup not because of their talent but because of how they all worked with each other
If you doubt Rex and Phil's contributions to Pantera, listen to the Damageplan album. Then listen to the Rebel Meets Rebel album which had Rex and was recorded well before Pantera broke up.
I think what's missing is that hump centered at 600-800 Hz that gives Dime's tone its signature crunch. But overall, turns out that the bad rap on these wasn't really justified, cus that's a pretty nice foundation to work with! As far as the Precision Drive, I find that it makes things sound a _liiittle bit_ too spanky, even for Dime's standards - and the L500XL and Dimebucker are already quite spanky to begin with. They have this very prominent peak at around 2.1 or 2.2 kHz, which does come across quite a bit in distorted tones... so that might actually be the "spike" you're referring to.
these newer modern drive pedals are more for lower tunings, definitely not on a Dime tone. I have an Airis Effects savage drive and I can agree it is a bit too spanky for Dime standards
That spikyness is mainly prevalent with the precision drive, it removes too much of the oomph from the guitar and the bright control Is definitely too high and the gain is a little low from the drive. The thinner jangly overdrive settings definitely are nasty but not in the way you want I think
It's impossible to get Dime's tone in one amp. Dude had some many little tricks he did to achieve that sound. I still think I liked the tones out of the Krankenstein better than most of his other signature amps. Great stuff, Ola.
Exactly,i don't think anyone could crack his tones,i have watched thousands of pantera's cover, only few came close but not really.his was a super unique one.
Dime was a big Eddie Van Halen fan and most likely took from his playbook by keeping his full setup and tone secrets to himself while throwing people "off his scent" at the same time.
I had one of these provided as backline for a festival once, having never heard of them before. Not what I was expecting but it ended up being pretty decent!
The Dime pickup just went serious bright. I hear the spike in my room. I wouldn't last 20 minute with it. You gotta change the speakers out. Its the speaker.
@@PapaWheelie1 Did you swap out the speakers? If so what speakers did you choose? I have an original 5150 Cab and the Block letter head. Eventually i am going to change out the SHITFEILDs in it. Maybe a pair of the EVH and a pair of Hempbacks. Not sure yet. That thing is SO loud even though my Torpedo reload. And since remote work, I can't even move it to another room and mic it up.
This stack was always good. Afforable and killer tone, the inside circuit is the same as the preamp on the rg100 so... A lot of people hated it because it was SS and sounded like shit (maybe they dont know how to dial an amp tone xD)
I had the Randall x2 warhead which nailed his tone amazingly, it was one of 50 made in slime green tolex, I kept the cab and went for a triamp head for more variation but that x2 was probably a hair better sounding than this And I always wanted the warhead 2 15 lower cab for a full stack
I always played Cemetery Gates' squealing amazing riff next to the nut. Pinches always come jumping out for me there, and I play .8's so bending not a problem
I had a Randall RG100ES years ago, It had a ton of gain which was surprising for its age, but it really didn't sound like Dime's tone. I eventually realized that he used a ton of post EQ and that's how he got his tone. He took a mediocre, muddy sounding amp and made it sound good and unique. Unfortunately I sold that amp, but luckily got pretty much all the money back I had into it because of its value and rarity.
Muddy!? You must have had a dud or a 'tired' amp!? I have one and people cannot believe how tight and powerful that amp is straight in without ANY pedals whatsoever. A sleeping giant of an amp. This coming from a guy who owns 2 EVH 100S Stealths, Mesa Road King 2 V2, Marshall JVM 410H, 2 Ampeg 140CC's to name a few in the high gain camp I own. Trust me - your experience is an unusual one.
I had one as well, I agree. I ran a set of active humbuckers into the face and it had a really hot sound for an amp of it's age but it always lacked something. I was close but not close enough to ever be satisfied. Although I wasn't going for dimes sound, I was going for max Chug usually. Boost on always. Was weak without it, even with the 9volts
I had about 50 amps..... I was always experimenting with my engineer new capacitors and NOS tubes and trading...so I had mesa rectifier a lot of times...bogner shiva...diezels....plexis vintage..etc... And there were 2 amps that made me crazy... Orange Rockerverb MK1 ( not 2 , not 3... 1 ) and this dime D-100...fuckin amazing man
With these companies getting every last drop out of DIMES name. I’d love a video where you do a complete rig with his signature amps /pedals/guitars to see if ya get anywhere near it 😂
I run this amp in my own personal rig. It’s a killer when you roll the gain back and boost the mids while cutting a bit of the highs…the tightness is UNREAL 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 My own setup: Dime D100 head Voodoo 4x12 cab with V30 / (I believe) Greenback mix Hotone Ampero multi-effects unit Jackson KEXQ Kelly w EMG H3 bridge, H2 neck Jackson SL7Q Soloist w EMG 57/66 combo
The EMG passive pickups sound cool. I have several of them (H1 (2), H2 (2) ALX (2), H1A (2), H2A (2), H4, H3) and they sound killer. Then again, I'm not using them with poor sounding beginner gear, so they sound better than most people would assume.
@@austinfailz if only they made them for seven string guitars, I’d have the H3 / H2 combo in both. I’m partial to the 57/66 combo though, they’re very versatile 😊
@@austinfailz why do you have to virtue signal the fact that your not using beginner gear? Do you say that at the beginning of a live show, so that everyone is clear on the subject? "Hey folks I expect to raise your expectations because I'm NOT using poor sounding beginner gear like some other stupid putz. Understand, my gear is top notch professional sounding gear, unsurpassed in quality and performance! And i have to mention that i have SEVERAL EMG passive pickups, and they sound coooool! Here, let me list them: Starting here i have the (H1 (2), H2 (2) and blah bla blahhhhhhhhhhuugh. Crowd leaves.
This one won't be popular at The Gear Page. They had a recent thread asking "which guitar God has/had the worst tone?" Many said that thought Dimebag had the worst. Personally, IDGAF what they think lol.
Well, out of context, it's a bad guitar tone. I can't imagine going after this type of tone for noodling around myself. But I can't imagine Pantera songs with any other type of tone since it's all baked in our ears.
It says a lot about Dime's skill as a guitarist that he is one of the most revered dudes in history with tone that would get guys like us thrown out of a band. Can't help but love the guy!
It may not sound exactly like Dimebags tone, however as a amp of its own it gives a great metal tone in its own right to be honest. A lot more midrange and can give a great modern metal tones. This is a killer amp and someone can come up with thier own signature tone with it.
Sounds nothing like Dimebag. A lot of eq-ing is needed to cut away mids and hi-mids and get rid of the harsh pick attack. Then again, with the right IRs you can get the same result out of pretty much every Head. I hope it's not expensive, otherwise they are just selling a name with no quality attached.
Dimebag will always be my favorite guitar player. Yes he was obviously extremely skilled, but he also had an awesome style and on top of that he was extremely fun to watch play on stage. He really was the center of the show every time I watched Pantera, Phil was entertaining too but Dime was the best showman. Most fun to watch guitar player I have ever seen. He was a character.
"make an amp that sounds like dimebags" is an amp makers dream. Dimebag proves that a great guitarist can come from anywhere with anything. Absolute opposite of the "tone" of the 80's. Disgusting, dirty solid state tones that just punch the fuck out of you.
Honesty, even before N.G killed Darrell I remember thinking Dime was going to die soon due to his alcohol abuse. I remember before his death kind of losing a bit of respect for him as a human being due to his alcohol addiction, I kind of got to the point where I honestly wanted to see the guy clean up his act! Even if he wasn't murdered I highly doubt he'd still be alive today...I know a lot of his fans liked the drunk Darrell, but myself as a fan started to think the alcohol was getting the best of him.
@@LeadMe2TheBliss funny enough i've heard about Dime having written letters about him wanting to get sober. It's very possible he would've went to get clean. He even had plans to try and reunite Pantera again before that tragic evening in Ohio.
Michael Angelo Batio used them, I saw the same NAMM video you did, and I knew what to add to them so I could get the perfect tone, but haven't been able to own one myself. I'm weird, I enjoyed the stuff nobody else liked, and I REALLY enjoyed the Dime stacks. If I could have one, man, that'd be a dream come true. Maybe one day I'll be fortunate enough.
I'm still rocking my Randall Warhead full stack cabs with the 2x15 for those natural lows. It's fkn killer 20 years later, or whenever I bought that thing. I remember the Warhead amp sucking balls so I got rid of it, but kept the cabs and still use em to this day.
Me too man, I bought the cabs off dimes old personal photographer through eBay. I never had a warhead head but I was lucky to acquire a krank krankenstein plus which was a rare one off made with an independent fx loop for the clean channel which no other model has. The thing is a beauty and can't wait to release my own music with it.
I had the cabinet for a good bit. I think the spikey frequency is likely more from the head or the boost. That’s not to say the cabinet isn’t a tremendous hunk of shit, because upon taking one apart I found perhaps the thinnest front baffle I’ve ever seen and the whole thing was stapled together. I used those speakers in another cabinet however, and they sound much better there. I actually think they’re good sounding speakers but not in their original enclosure.
If I recall correctly, in an interview back in the day Dime boosted the hell out of the signal going into the amp, with the preamp gain set a bit low to tame that woofy sound.
There was an in depth interview in a magazine that iirc was called Thrash Guitarist where Dime discussed how he got his Vulgar Display tone and in particular his tone on F***ing Hostile. The description went something along the lines of that Dime grabbed a handful of distortion pedals, plugged them all in in series, he couldn't remember them all but there was a big pig in there and a fuzz face and he said "I had to keep hold of the guitar in case the feedback ripped it out of my hands" 😆 🤣 . Can you get any more Dime? Phil: "What distortion pedal shall we use for this really angry song?" Dime: "Yes!"
It'd be interesting to hear this with a tubescreamer instead. I think that characteristic hump it has would lend itself better to Dime's tone with this amp and those pickups than a more modern OD which feel to me, at least, like they're more catering to lower tunings and lack that sound profile that the TS does
I still miss my Rg100 half stack. It was my first proper amp I bought. Unfortunately I had to sell it to save my pops house from foreclosure back in 08. One day I’ll get one again.
@@MrCarcass1978 You do what you gotta do for family. I miss it; but I do not regret helping out my pops. I get a pretty similar tone with my pod go; but nothing is like the original.
You need 3 of those heads and cabinets, one with mids boosted, one that sounds horribly bassy, and one that sounds normal ish to get closest to the tone.
I had this "instant dime tone" experience with a mxr pedal like 8 years ago. Not sure but I think it was the full bore metal. think I need to buy it XD. And I wish that they would be more leftie models from his signatures.
I have the D100C, but it came with no pedal. I use the one for my Peavey Sheffield Bandit and it does the same job. Great Video as Usual Ola ; ) I am a huge Dime Worshiper myself🤘✌🖖
I saw them open for KISS, I didnt know anything about them. I wish I had appreciated them more at that show.... and thier " hair metal" days , they sounded AWESOME!! I didn't know they were so good at hair metal
That spike hurts the ears but there is definitely great tone in there. I'd love to see a series where you match up each head you have to a bunch of cabs. It'd be a load of work but great content!
Hi Ola! I think the volume of your playthrough at the intro is louder like +5db than when you're talking. Just a heads up haha Awesome vid btw! 5:45 Horizon Devices Precision Devices Horizon Zero Dawn Precision Drive HAHAHHAHAH
Not for me. D. Darrell was one of those people who's playing was great and songs were great, but their guitar sound? Not so much. At least if you're not playing a very specific type of metal. He's in good company though, Randy Rhodes had that same thing. Crazy Train has one of the best riffs in all rock, and he was one of the best players. But the studio version of that song sounds like he ran his Marshall through the stock speaker in 1998 Gateway Laptop computer. Boxy and harsh.
I had the Randell, I believe it was 200, been years since I owned it, this Dimebag amp your playing through looks better and sounds better in my opinion, I think Dimebag would have loved it!!! We all love The Abbot brothers, they blessed us with their wonderful music and abilities!!!
That mic'd amp sounds like nails running down a chalk board to my ears... arghhh turn it off lol. The (in the room) mic sounded better but you've done other dimebag tone videos that sound WAYYYYY better than this.
I wouldn't buy an entire stack just for 1 tone that I probably wouldn't use for myself. This makes no sense unless you're a Pantera tribute band or something.
6 or 8 years ago I was in Guitar Center & they had one of these amps pretty cheap. I think maybe $200. I passed on it without trying it out & Damn I do regret that now.
Hi Ola! I was stupidly amazed by the whole foam thing. I had never seen that trick before, and would be very interested in seeing more useful tech tricks. Which brings me to my point/question: It would be great to see a video, in which you share some tech tricks. Or, if you have a ton of them, maybe make a segment where you share a tip per Swola? Take care! And thank you very much for your videos!
9:10 That's a pretty narly tone! Nice!! Overall, Dime in a box? Maybe not but seems like an affordable option for people starting out. This amp might be more reliable than the old Randall's and without collector's prices. Idk. I'm curious how these Eminence speakers stack up against Jaguar ones. That could be a significant factor.
I have that same Dean ML Southern Cross. They;'re going for almost 6 grand now with dings. Holy shit. Mines a daily driver too lol When did thi shappen? P.S. what number is yours Ola? Mine is 13
Gary Sunda, the Engineer behind Randall rg100es has a youtube channel with one video about his time with Randall and his involvement with the Dime d100. He said it's just a reissue of the Rg100es.
Dime always had one of the best guitar tones of all-time that many players have tried to duplicate over the years. If only we could get his tone out of simply buying this set-up.
@@MostlyLost on cowboys and vulgar? Yeah, kinda sucked, Trendkill on the original release sounded great though, they wrecked it on the 20th anniversary remaster... Terry Date’s mix of RTS also sounds mega
Well, they're not the best guitar tones. But, it is legendary. I think Dime and Randy's tone are the most sought after. Probably 2nd and 3rd to Eddie Van Halen's.
What if you mix the room mic into it. Atleast the "GSCHHHHHHHHHH"-highs of the room mic. That metallic clunciness is what i am missing in most dimebag type Tones
