I REALLY liked your way of presenting the diminished scale shapes as approach tones to the dominant arpeggio. Thanks for sharing!

You nailed it Marc. I am able to use the diminished scale in the context of a G7 now. I need to make it smoother, but the concept is very clear. Well done!

Hi Marc. Is the diminished 7 the same as half-whole step scale? Is G whole-step diminised the same scale but on half step up? thanks
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 2 года назад
Yes. It's the same. You can either do HWHWHWHW or actually WHWHWHW... the structure is the same. In the video, I'm talking about G7b9 ... so it's G to Ab to Bb to B. So it's HWHWHWHW starting from a G note :)

How to make phrases out of it?
@jazzguitar
@jazzguitar 2 года назад
Well -- that's the secret of being familiar enough with the patterns to "shred" lines on it. Then build up your own vocab. Also transcriptions are good. Numerous Bill Evans and Wes Montgomery lines using that scale.

Ah yes -- that's another story. When the chord changes, attempt to outline one specific note at a time.

If I may make a suggestion, just play the scale from the start, and later explain it.

Ah! Understood. Another way to see the see the diminished scale (Half-whole) starting from the G note in the video: -Start with the chromatic scale (12 notes) -In the sequence of 12 notes, remove the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th notes. -You're left with only 8 notes out the 12? --> THAT's the diminished scale :)
