"He was able to save himself because he had friends and the professor" I approve of this line because there's far too many love stories with "the beauty fixing the beast". Yes, Dimitri is a bit of an edge lord with a woman that saves him but Byleth doesn't say things like "I like you just for who you are" nor does she try to fix him with love from the beginning. She actually does point it out when he does something bad and encourages him to change. It is only through their journey that they eventually fall in love.
@@i_will_not_elaborate It's not even Byleth who "snaps" him out of his dark phase- it was Rodrigue (or rather his sacrifice). His friends comfort him and Byleth guides him. There's some minor symbolism if you play AM, namely before the skip Jeralt died and Dimitri was the one to support Byleth- and now it's her time to support him. I like this subversive take on the "beauty x beast" trope (if it is one) because the heroine knew and befriended Dimitri before he snapped, and also, there were implications of an underlying attraction between the two. In other words, there's no "girl meets beast and instinctively knows he's a good boyo deep inside" but rather she wants to get her friend who's suffering back to his senses. She knows he a good boi because he was a good boi when they met.

Sure, they might look the part as they are portrayed as so in many fanarts (no offense to the fanarts tho i love them) but what i really love about their relationship (whether you view it platonic or romantic) is that they BOTH grow. They didn't change each other, they both learned from each other. Byleth starts out as the ashen demon with no emotion, in pre TS, its Dimitri who reaches out to her and shows her her humanity. In post ts, its the opposite. Its Byleth reaching out to Dimitri to help him back on his feet again 💗 (sorry i typed too much XD)
But sadly in our reality, at the mere sight of you being at your worst, everyone would leave and cut ties with you to suffer alone, no one will go near you. Non will stay by your side to help and guide you towards change and even if there is they will be left as well. If you take your life out of hopelessness, they either mock your death or act as if they pitied you, act as if they cared so others will see them as a “kind soul” and that they are “right”, they have better judgement. They talk about mental illness and giving support when they themselves do not practice what they preach.

I honestly feel like not marrying Dimitri at the end of AM is a disservice. Dimitri and Byleth getting together at the end is the perfect end to their journey. Their relationship is one of the best parts of the route.
true... even though there are a lot of romance choices, story is pushing you to do dimitri s support which makes sense not only because they went through a lot together but the s support itself reveals about dimitri not being able to recover after all. Everything he says in s support is consistent with the story. its sad tho a lot of people miss out on this part and assumes he had a magic redemption.
I know, the writers did so well with his character interactions here! While the story is arguably kinda nudging us along his Romance, I never once felt pressured or obligated, It felt like a natural progression for their story! It just works so perfectly, other games could learn a thing or two!

Popping back on this video months later to add a true story: When I was defending Garreg Mach on my first Blue Lions run, Dimitri shouted the "Get down!" line and then took a hit from Randolph that by all means should have missed (it had like a 30% hit chance). So the only way I could reconcile it in my brain was to imagine that Dimitri, even as crazy as he was, still shoved Byleth out of the way and took the hit for her.
i plan on recording it but when he tells you to "go away" try zooming in on Byleth's face. It changes into a frown 🤣 its a nice detail that's so easy to miss
Not gonna lie, I feel so bad whenever I have to romance someone else in the BL route. Especially after the A support cause it became so obvious Dimitri is in love with Byleth at that point 😭 and I just can't abandon my boy....
Me too tbh but he can have Marianne Ferdie is a beautiful orange man and I wish I married him in my first playthrough in golden deer route (Claude is just too good of a boi to pass up)
I mean, that small dagger Byleth always has does look like a gift. It clashes a bit with the rest of the outfit too. And personally, I think it looks like a "childs first weapon" kind of gift. A dagger as a sentimental gift would work probably REALLY well for Byleth specifically. @@dragonstouch1042
This is why I ship them! Dimitri grew so much and had lots of development thanks to Byleth, they went through hell and back together and despite that she was gone for 5 years she helped Dimitri when he needed her most after reuniting. I refuse to romance anyone else in BL but him
Felix and Annette probably went for that for their first date considering how "happy and excited" they were at their first kill during the first mission to Zanado compared to everyone else lol
See, I never play the blue lions route anymore because I’m completely and utterly satisfied with my only blue lions route play through where I married Dimitri. And he gets special S-support music which is YES YES YES!
same!! all the routes were amazing but nothing satisfied me more than azure moon and them ending up together. Among the lords, his s support is the only one with "some where to belong" which is quite fitting because its as if it wasnt even an option to marry him

I started with mbyleth too :( when I saw there was no S rank in the support menu I was devastated :( they didn't even bother changing the dialogues like asking you to smile for him and that "mesmerizing" line lol, so maybe I thought hey, they can be a thing? ( i mean I was able to s support edel as fbyleth in my first route) I literally restarted the route just to switch to fbyleth
I am starting to think that they should implement a "give a hug and support" option...........or terapy. I could think of a few people that could benefict from the last one (right Eldergard?)
God the voice breaks in the rain scene fuck me up every time. Dimi puts himself through a façade he feels he has to endure as penance, but a penance he nonetheless detests, and no matter how much he shrugs off or tries to hmph his way through conversations on it, he's ultimately just so broken that the second he's legitimately pressed on by Byleth in that scene, he's on the verge of tears and is choking them back. It makes the hand holding between them so important, as he finally is able to feel human once more, and end his cycle of destructive self-hatred. god i love him so much,,
I finished the blue lions part first and now i wanted to start another one but it hurted so much to choose the eagles over lions.. *Then i just chose lions again*

I noticed something that is now one of my favorite details in the game. When Dimitri is all grumpy and stuff, there is a gray shade on his eye. But, when he's not grumpy, that gray is gone! I love that detail oh my gosh! 😭💖

i thought it was some twisted joke too :( because dedue literally never leaves his side (except those 5 years) it may have been mistranslation again but I suppose he only realized that sentiment comforting after he almost lost everything. but at least in their paired ending, they're by each other's side forever.

It's probably an unpopular opinion, but I totally wanted to S Support him as male!Byleth. Don't get me wrong I married him on BL route, but male!Byleth deserves to marry this big dork too. 😭

i thought so too at first but i think this is another one of those localization problems....another thing could be that this statement is valid IF you didn't do dedue's paralogue (which i hope everyone did his paralogue...) because he'll just be gone the rest of the timeskip....so he literally cant be by his side anymore :(
When he started telling me to go away and leave him alone made me genuinely worried I'd done something wrong and I wouldn't be able to S rank with him later. I was so relieved that we were just persistent with him to make it so at the end, he just needed some love
I just finished AM, after starting VW, stopping at the lava map, starting and finishing CF, going back to VW, and doing AM. This video really makes me love Dimitri's story and character development. And his reaction to Byleth being surprised about the ring, man I live this guy. I can respect Edelgard's will power but not her ideals, I love all of Clayde except how he runs away, and I love Dimitri's personal story, despite his atrocities. I wish this game could've been more fleshed out, but overall I really love how they did the concept of how you'll never get the full story until you play each route.
On a side note. I love how if you talk to Balthus during Azure Moon he always goes on about how strong Dimitri is but always says that hes only 2nd strongest to him 🤣🤣🤣
its the cutscene before taking fort merceus. the scene will always be there :) because its part of the main story. but his dialogue to byleth depends on byleth's response to his concern
Yeah because the option "Will you save me if I'm in trouble?" His response goes something along the line "Of course! You are the heart of the Blue Lions, as the same goes for the Kingdom army."
