Dinah Washington - I'll close my eyes

Songwriters: Buddy Kaye, William Gordon, Billy Reid (1956)
lyrics:
Heaven sends a song through its doors
Just as if it seems to know, I'm exclusively yours
Knowing this, I feel but one way
You will understand too, in these words that I say
I'll close my eyes to everyone but you
And when I do, I'll see you standing there
I'll lock my heart to any other caress
I'll never say yes to a new love affair
I'll close my eyes to everything that's gay
If you're not there, to share each lovely day
And through the years, those moments
When we're far apart
I'll close my eyes and see you with my heart

I dedicate this to my beloved husband, Bob. I lost him almost 2 years ago. We had a 44 year love affair. Hearing Dinah sing this brings me to tears.

Sharon Lightfoot, isn't it wonderful how this song can bring such tender emotion? I had been saving it for years to be the first dance when I married the love of my life. Sadly, he passed away before that could ever happen. It's pure bittersweet beauty isn't it? 😌

When i first heard this song, earlier today, i thought that i was listening to - sarah vaughn - nancy wilson - gloria lynn Just as when i first actually saw and heard sarah vaughn sing, immediate tear flow.. In my current time from return to surreal, played the recording, again, its either because of time of night, or a sense of fullfillment. To have loved is better than not to have been loved, and to have memories that are a reminsce over-rides the temporary flash of missing him so much, yesterday and today.

Two of the most dignified, principled, GOD, fearing georgeous Black persons, that I was Blessed to be reared by, who I miss ever so dearly!!!!! Lee Daniel's out did himself with the makings of this wonderful, uplifting, interesting film, "The Butler!!!!!!!

Thank you. Dinah & Sarah were both very talented. As far as I know, Dinah started earlier, very young. I always enjoy, "Broken Hearted Melody." Both had many loyal fans. Including myself! Chuck Cecil, the Disc Jockey, "The Swingin' Years," said that, "Broken Hearted Melody" is a Rock 'N Roll Song. One of the few things which I don't completely agree with Chuck, on, though I understand his perspective -

There are two versions by Dinah of this lovely ballad. This is by far the better orchestrated one with incredibly lush strings now replacing the horns. It make a huge impact. I first heard this arrangement on Clint Eastwood's THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY (1995) soundtrack and it hit me in such a way that I had it played at our commitment ceremony in 1996 with my now husband. To Reece with all my love.

Anotyher one is by Quincy Jones, but that arrangement pales by comparison to this one.

I was in an old record store some months ago. And I looked at all of the albums made that are no longer listened to. Why do some vocalist and artist get remember. Its the interpretation, life story, and pain behind these recording. When you listen to Billy Holliday or Dinah you know these ladies went through some stuff. Dinah was no Joke. I love that raw talent.

The female singers today think they have it. Man, are they wrong. It's not just about having the straightest, shiniest hair. It's not ever about your face or body. And, it's not about hitting your mark or a note on time. The greatest singers are, indeed, heaven sent, gifted, and they reek of heart and soul. It can not be produced. It's an inherent talent that makes it impossible for the listener to NOT believe what she sings. Like this song by Dinah Washington. A man can not, NOT, believe every word she sings. Don't you know? Just try closing your eyes while you listen.
