So few artist can capture a song and make it so undeniably theirs. Such was the magic and artistry of Jon Lucien. This was one of the songs I used to inspire my early poems. Wow what memories, what beauty, what love does this song brings back to my mind and heart. Truly a blessing to have heard the sweet , mellow, and magical sound of one Mr. Jon Lucien. Yes my heart breaks to discover his passing. To the days of W.R.V,R and the chief rocker the late Frankie Crocker, when radio was really radio. I salute the days, the music, and the artist that made that time of the 1970's, just the best.
Very well said, and so true. Frank Sinatra does a beautiful version of this song, also, but I must say this one is incomparable. Years ago, I made a mixed tape including this song, followed up by Ashford and Simpson's 'give me something real'. Must listen to that one now..
Not sure if I heard it on the radio back in the 1970's, but my dad used to listen to this and I'm still listening to it. I also have two of Jon Lucien's albums, Song for My Lady
Yeah, sad news. I just discovered it while I was uploading this video and doing a little research on him. Fortunate of you that you got to see him in concert. Lovely man.
Jon Lucien makes any song he sings his own. Fellow Detroiters from back in the day whose radios, like mine, were locked on WJZZ 24/7 know and love Bobo's version. They both are fantastic. The little Bossa Nova scatting at the end of Bobo's version is special.
Audrey Boyd I remember Vaughn and the quiet storm. I wonder if these wonderful DJs know just how fondly they are thought of by us. They came into our homes...sometimes, in the middle of a very lonely night, with their warm voices and their great music and made it a little less lonely.
Terry Turner On an up note, a wonderful thing I also discovered in my mini research project was that he did an album he always wanted to do before he died.. It's called: "The Wayfarer". The liner notes for this album on Jon's website say: "This project realizes Jon's dream to sing praises to God and Jesus Christ his Savior".
Hey all....I've been a fan of Jon Lucien for many years. I'm happy to say I'm still on this wonderful planet to continue to enjoy this man's beautiful voice. I''m in a new relationship....being divorced for many years....This song perfectly describes my new love. Bless this fantastic woman...One who moved my whole universe with her grace and kindness. I'm a very lucky man today.....Jon lucien makes my wonderful new journey an easy ride!
Had the pleasure of chauffeuring this phenomenonal artist around St Louis while he was here for a concert. He sang this song and brought the room to the edge of their seats.
Yes.... sultry.... WBLS Radio..... New York. They sure knew how to lay down smooth music. I spent my last years before leaving for college listening to great vocalists like Jon Lucein, and James Moody,,,,,"Moody's Mode for Love". Later in life.........I found out that love....... can never live up to the way these guys sang it! ,,,,,,,,,,, WoW!
This is the version I remember from the Seventies, @ NYCCC, 300 Jay Street, Bklyn. and Hanging with Sensei Moses Powell and got to see/listen to the to the Hon. Minister Louis Farrakhan, at a Church on Herkimer Street, just East of Bedford Avenue and South of Atlantic Ave. Willie Bobo has a version also.
Thank You Arthur! I just downloaded it. Sounds beautiful! I put a "shout out" to you in the details for this helpful information. Much Appreciated, Annette
Nicholas Jackson I'm glad to hear that. The way I have loved Jon since I first heard this song in the early 80s, I assumed he had a kind of recognition that his voice deserved. But, in reading up on his life a few years ago (when I uploaded this video,) I was shocked to find out that he didn't. Perhaps, the balance in all of this is that: for those of us who DID know of him and recognize his amazing gift, he remains to be among the best vocalists and song interpreters that have ever graced us and continues to be much appreciated and loved.
Lara O'neal I'm so glad you enjoyed this. He made a few versions of this song "Dindi" but, this one was my favorite. Jon Lucien was one of the greats in my opinion. And yet, I had to hear him on an obscure Jazz station from Connecticut back in the early 80s.
Gin-Jee is the Portuguese pronunciation of this song named Dindi by AC and Tom Jobim. I love the Gin-Jee pronunciation, such a wonderful name. You are lucky...
Hahaha. Busted! It was 1983 and there was this great jazz station broadcasting from Connecticut I think. The DJ at night played awesome music. Was in a pretty bad situation at the time and, one of my few pleasures was listening to this great music and recording it on my JVC boom box. This song is a gem that I caught on one of those nights.
SOMEONE SAID JON LUCIAN MADE THE BEST VERSION OF (JINJI) BUT THEY ARE WRONG. NOT TAKING ANYTHING FROM(JON LUCIAN) BUT WILLIE BOBO HAS THE BEST VERSION OF (JINJI) HANDS DOWN ....
NAH...Willie's version is missing the gift of absence, the surprise of delay in his vocals. Jon's version has variety, delay, little vocal nuances that surprise the 1st time listener. Willie's version, however nice, is predictable. Even Jean Carne's version is better than his. Just another opinion... :-)
