Since I built the watertight side seats on my skiff I hadn't tested the boat's behavior when capsized. It was time to practice some capsize recovery!! The skiff floated higher, still didn't have the tendency to turtle and the hollow box mast proved really helpful with that!!
It's always good to know what to expect by training under controlled circumstances, the more you practice the better you react when it happens!
All in all an amazingly well spent afternoon!
It's all about having fun! 😁

It does feel weird at first, when you're editing but it brings something else to the table... 😉 One thing they don't tell you is that although the camera films in 5.7K, that is the res at full fish eye mode. by the time you correct the distortion you will get 1080P or 1440p at best.

Without that buoyant mast you might have had trouble with turning turtle. Those side seats combined with the weight of the rig would have been a dangerous combination. As it is, your boat is better than a lot of life rafts! Well done
@TheBoatRambler

Hey Andy, the GIS already has 300 liters buoyancy built in from original design. it wont sink! 😁

Well Done. Wash, rinse, and repeat on a windy day, make sure you have a length of rope to hold onto so the boat does not get blown away. :-)

Have you thought of putting in a self drain , or auto bailer valve thing ?
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler Год назад
Hi Dan! no not really, the GIS is a very dry boat and the auto bailer alwys end up letting water in the boat at some point. Also in 3 seasons I have never accidentally capsized the boat (yet) so....🤞
@michaelbell7465
@michaelbell7465 2 года назад
Has any builder done one with a waterproof sole built higher than the DWL with rear scuppers to be self bailing in a static condition? I was surprised how easy it was to capsize with just your weight shift.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 года назад
Hi Michael, The GIS is lightweight & fast much like a performance dingy. Like most racing dinghies (and many others) if you don't compensate your weight on the gunwalle with some wind on the sail, it will flip!
@andyjarman4958
@andyjarman4958 2 года назад
I read somewhere that climbing in over the transom risked the boat turning away from the wind and racing off without you!
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 года назад
Hi Andy! Even if it turned away from the wind the tendency would be to go round to windward as the tiller is loose. 😉
@andyjarman4958
@andyjarman4958 2 года назад
Try it without the mast, that would be interesting. Imagine you tear your sail in high winds and decide to row. Knowing how important the mast is to prevent capsize would be an important reason not to take the mast down.
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 года назад
Rowing in high winds with the GIS high sides would be almost impossible. Better off trying to just go downwind to the closest shore if possible.

Maybe I missed it, but it looked like all your capsizes were to starboard. Have you tried any to port?
@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 года назад
Hi Chris! You are right! I was trying to see how much water would go in the hatch with the camera in it and I ended up not capsizing to port! It is an important test since the mast will be under the sail, boom and yard. I will do it next time! 😉

@TheBoatRambler
@TheBoatRambler 2 года назад
Hi Adrian! Some of the GIS owners have made a watertight box with a pump and battery to have aboard. It is a good idea and I might just make one too! 😉
@cosybike
@cosybike 2 года назад
They are very slow. Maybe useful in his buoyancy tanks or for emptying the last few litres. Buckets do 14 litres in one pump. Look like 5 or 6 scoops in this boat. Mine is about 15! I have an electric pump for under my floorboards too.
