Terrific little adventure. Invest in a small 250g drone, if you haven’t already. It would’ve been magic to get some aerial shots of the islands & reef. 👍🏼👍🏼
I'm so jealous of your dinghy! I almost got a dinghy, Albin Vega is almost a dinghy, she will be my home for the rest of my life I hope, I'm cutting the cord with society, and now I will go see stuff and fish as many different kind of fishes I can. I will be building a sailing tender to please my dinghy craving! 😁
Vega’s are great boats.Good luck with your adventure, I lived aboard and cruised yachts that I owned for 20 years before embarking on the dinghy sailing.Cheers
Hey awsome adventure guys! JOHN is it possible to do a walk through with your boat? I'm really interested to see just how your sail set up is as I have never seen anything like it! I think you guys are having a better time then the bigger boats by far.. I have never thought about doing that trip on a vessel of that size 😳
Great videos Bruce. Up in my neck of the woods. We are blessed to have some quite outstanding cruising grounds. Hoping to get my Hartley out for some decent sailing this summer. Looking to do a week or so around the Keppels before Xmas if things go according to plan. Thanks those such as yourself, Kate Louise and Trim I think we are getting some of the best dinghy cruising on RU-vid.
The La Nina isn't making things easy lol. Saw my first ts16 at Manly (bne) public ramp about 63 or 64, didn't know what they were then, my Dad asked the owner what it was. Had a cabin so to me was a proper yacht lol.
What a fantastic trip Bruce. Looks like you had the last two islands pretty much to yourselves. The most adventurous two dinghy cruising videos I have seen. Dream sail!
Thanks for taking us along mate. I'm not a sailors backside, but being a Lake Macquarie boy(60) I can appreciate the journey, scenery and wildlife. Good one boys, bravo.👍
Great quality video of a great trip ! Gutsy effort in small boats, but well rewarded with the beauty of what you saw and visited. Well done both of you.
Bruce you guys are between nuts n amazing ! You had me pure hanging almost with this awesome sailing ⛵️ out in open water. Those cays a vividly gorgeous with the crystal clear water near each islet/cat n intense blue in deep waters. Fast turtles 🐢 (except the couple mating), sharks 🦈 swimming by n a couple playing n breeching whales. Loved 🥰 that rush of adrenaline surfing ashore on the incoming swells as well. Just one truely amazing venture in open dinghies … great wx window with blue daytime skies n vivid sunsets as well. Bet the starry nights were grand n spectacular.. not sure 🤔 I’d try in a near open dinghy but maybe in a Soveign or Precision 18’ with a nice cabin. To be 40 or 50 again n free to try that challenge n adventure. Thankz Mate for a great share .. Think 🤔 you could get Paul out there ? Cheer mate, Papa J Washington State.
It’s so nice to receive feedback from someone who’s enjoying my videos so much. I really appreciate it, and am planning another Barrier Reef trip again this year.As to Paul doing one you will have to ask him yourself,he would make a great production out of it that’s for sure. Cheers Bruce.
Bloody brilliant Bruce and John. When I was a kid we had a family friend who had one of the few (7 or 8) tin fishing shacks that was then 1770 and spent many great fishing trips around the area and offshore. Well done and hopefully see you on the next Raid! Cheers, Ric
Great videos! Love the Day Sailor, had not thought of it as an expedition boat but it seems to do a good job. Love the lines of the boat. Seems a bit tender from the videos but you seem to have great control over the boat. Beautiful sailing area you are in.
Thanks Jim,yes I don’t think the Day Sailer was designed to go offshore but it is a good solid boat and has stood up well so far.We are lucky here with our cruising grounds.
Thanks, thoroughly enjoyed the videos, I've been working toward getting my little trailer-sailer ready for something similar and you've really whet the appetite! I hope you'll continue making videos of your sailing adventures, even if it may not be easy to top this one.
What wonderful sail you all had, truly stunning views and just so much to try and take in. I'd have been just as camera happy and I think you got some really spectacular shots on your adventure. Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...
You two had one great little adventure. And some fantastic sailing. So is the sloop a little faster than the cat ketch? Both looked pretty equal. Really nice video work too.
Thanks Fred,Yes it was a great trip. We are planning another one for next year. The two boats are fairly even although the Core Sound ketch is lighter and seems a tad quicker in light breeze unless I break out the Spinnaker.
Ι like your boats. They are well desined and built.Very interesting the shape of the sails of the boat with the two rigs. What seaworthiness it has ?? Thank you. From Greece
Great scenes. Thank you. Please mention why open dinghy sailing compared to small trailer sailor. I have sailed 125 dinghy on Brisbane River a lot but could not imagine 12 foot dinghy in open water like Lady Musgrave Island. Best wishes.
Thanks John, I like the challenge of open boat sailing and The simplicity of not having an enclosed cabin to fill with to much stuff that I would leave there adding to the weight.
Cracking trip and great video log. What was the depth over the reef entering hoskyn and Fairfax do you remember? I draw about 0.3 with centerboard and rudder up.
Wow, excellent viewing what dinghy are they? The booms around sails on John's boat looked like windsurf booms just asking I'm not a dinghy owner yet. Great video 👍
Hi Bruce, I like your sailing even I hardly understand what your are telling us ;-) I am always wondering how you manage all your maneuvers and reefing single handed?! Maybe you want to show that some time?
Thank you for the question,it is difficult to film when working the boat to show this but generally I try to reef before setting out on a sail and the rest of the manoeuvre’s are performed with great haste.
Hi Greg, I have an Epirb and the required offshore safety equipment you need for any boat going more than 2nm offshore. For navigation I use a handheld GPS and paper charts which you could say makes me old school. I also carry a handheld VHF for communication.John has a chart plotter running on 12v in his boat. I have no 12v system in mine, just small battery packs and small solar panel for charging.
Wonderful video, again. Thanks How do raise and lower your centerboard? My Day Sailor has a lever on the centerboard trunk. Yours looks like a different set up.
Hi Stan, yes my boat has a weighted centreboard which I control with a line attached to the trailing edge then running up and through a sheave mounted in the top of the case.
@@stan440us I think that is how they were done here. I just built a new centreboard out of timber with lead weights inset to make it drop then fibreglassed over.
Looks like a good set up. My set up with the lever is a bit awkward. Two handed operation. One hand to push the lever to remove pressure on the keeper and the other hand to push the keeper. Then pull the lever to move the centerboard into position.
Thankyou Bruce I am inspired to go cruising, very quick question as I am new to this would a Hartley 16 be suitable for this trip and what time of the year did you guys go
@@brucedyson-smith459 Thats soo cool! I'm planing to make a free project called Clown 450, the project is stitch and glue, hope I be able to make few adventures like yours :O Do you know this project? Do you think I will be able to make that? I'm a little worried about him stern, have 360mm tall only :X
What a fantastic place to live with all those small boat adventures. I wish I could join you guys with my little Aquarius 21 sweet pee. Check it out on my channel. Thanks for posting. BTW...did you have your centerboard down when you surfed in threw the breakers.
