That said they still need to establish the legitimate state of ownership over resources because they need to feed and breed their most physically powerful members first.

You would be wrong, the growling is a physical power projection technique used to establish the legitimate state of ownership and chain of custody of resources. The more physically powerful wolf is the legitimate owner of the resources. That does not mean it is unwilling to share. Wolves, and pretty much every other living thing other than humans, feed and breed their most physically powerful members first pecking order heuristic. This is because feeding and breeding your strongest most physically fit members first is the best way to ensure the survival of the species as a whole.

Same lifespan? The average human lives around 75-80 years. Wild wolves rarely survive past 8-10 years whereas in captivity, they can be as old as 14, and that's *ancient* for a wolf.

They know instinctually that this increases the odds of survival for their species as a whole.

Nah coyotes are smaller than that, plus their vocalisations and body language is different in many ways when comparing them with wolves. Also there are many types of wolves with different heights, builds and fur lengths too :)
