I bought this about six months ago as well, really good kit! It would be fun to see it painted, i guess there must be millions of ways to paint it. I went for a green approach with a light yellow bottom side and sort of a green-gray top side and a red head. If you read this and consider buying it, remember that it will look cooler when running, but it's easier to make it stand up if you make it in standing pos.
Feb. 2018---Thanks for the kit review. After 15 years, decided In late 2016 to get back into modeling, but this time going for 1/35th scale zombie/apocalypse dioramas. Why 1/35th? Because that's what my stash of figures, trucks, etc. are in. Since I started doing this, did a lot of research via Google for possible diorama ideas and came up with photos of an abandoned dinosaur theme park in Arkansas. Which is why I bought several of Tamiya's dinosaurs, though my T-Rex wasn't the diorama one. My T-Rex will be laying on it's side, with a hole in its belly with a survivor (or survivors) cooking a meal in front of the hole with maybe park benches outside the hole as a security measure.
I built this kit once back in the 80's. I remember replacing all the teeth with stretched sprue teeth. What a pain in the butt that turned out to be, but it looked so much better than the molded teeth that came with the kit.
I had always wondered about the Tamiya Dino kits. Having built several of the Tamiya Military kits, I assumed the the kit to be of above average standards, but, Now I know having happened upon Your review! Thank You for sharing, I can now purchase with relief. Later Russ
I didn't even know these were back out. Never bought this one when they came out in the mid 90's as the box art never looked right to me. I had the Chasmosaurus, Triceratops and Velociraptor pack kits. Might have to pick this one up if I can find it. Been into dinos since I was a kid. Actually did have a larger scale T-Rex and Raptor kits made of vinyl from Horizon when Jurassic Park was out. They had a huge Brachiosaurus from this series I wanted as well as in vinyl. That one was over $100 I found it at a local hobby cheaper but it's huge. Great review as usual and I'm looking forward to the build.
The head does look different but I put that down to the Jurassic Park style of T Rex and how everyone associates that look to the beast now. I'd love to get a hold of some of those Horizon kits too. Last time I saw a Brachiosaurus, the price was up around the $600 mark due to rarity.
It's a good kit, much improved over Tamiya's old T-rex kit. It reflects the more modern interpretation of the fossil record, at the time it was issued.
Wow, that's really cool! This video was an absolute joy to watch, as I'm a bit of a dino nut myself. Can't wait to see how it turns out! Subscribed! ^_^ (LOL at the cloaca)
Looks surprisingly much more like an Abelisaurus. This would actually make a pretty cool abelisaurus with a few modification, like resculting the infamous two fingers pronatous arms into 3 fingers supinatous ones...
It's on the cards. I'm hoping to get into more Dino tutorials soon as they are few and far between on the web. Creating texture stamps and seam removing on Dino kits are two I'm planning on doing one day soon.
Anyone who's interested in building dinosaur kits, whether styrene or resin, should check out the Clubhouse modeling forum, which is at theclubhouse1.net/phpBB3/index.php There is a subforum called the Tar Pit, just for prehistoric subjects.
