Dionne Warwick often gets overlooked when compared to many of her contemporaries - Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, Patti Labelle, etc. Unlike these ladies (who are all remarkable), Dionne was never a soul belter but rather an interpreter who uses finesse and subtlety to convey the meaning of the lyrics Classy and always elegant, her style is easily recognisable and a pleasure to sit back and listen too. She's a storyteller in her approach to singing and the end result is timeless.
@nycp1969
@nycp1969 2 года назад
I think she's overlooked compared to those others because although she took a soulful approach to her music, it wasn't R&B at all. She was a sophisticated MOR balladeer for the most part. Really, a singer like Diana Ross has a catalog with more soulful music than Dionne. Dionne's strong start with the original, yet not at all soulful sound of Burt Bacharach set her on a long path of a unique sound and approach to music. I love her phrasing and articulation. I love the way she weaves her musical stories.

The most amazing thing about this genius is how effortless she makes this vocal brilliance look. Her control of her breath is mind blowing, you Never see her take in the oxygen needed for this powerful performance. The control is unreal, so elegant, the most faultlessly effortless delivery of this masterpiece ever.....

The most underrated female vocalist of all-time!
@shawnjones4527
@shawnjones4527 4 года назад
If you think an artist of her caliber is underrated, I suggest you look up the definition of underrated because that's not a word that has ever been used to describe this iconic legend. In the last few years, I've noticed how many people use the word "Underrated" to describe an artist that they feel doesn't get the recognition that they deserve. However, in majority of the cases that I've come across, the artist isn't underrated, so I suggest those that are making such claims, do more research, especially for those that are too young to remember the impact the artist has made. Just to give you an example of her accomplishments, I took the liberty of providing you with this excerpt: Warwick ranks among the 40 biggest hit makers of the entire rock era (1955-1999), based on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles Charts. She is one of the most-charted female vocalists of all time, with 56 of her singles making the Billboard Hot 100 between 1962 and 1998, and 80 singles making all Billboardcharts combined.

@WarperBlade
@WarperBlade 5 лет назад
She got really lucky as smoking usually ruins the voice like it did with Whitney. (With all due respect. It wasn't the drugs, but in fact the smoking, among other things) Dionne's voice on the other hand endured over 30 years staying nearly intact well into the late nineties.
@shawnjones4527

I strongly disagree, she definitely lost the range, due to smoking, don't kid yourself. This performance was in 1975. I love Dionne's voice but she couldn't even sing like this in 1986, with "That's what friends are for".

@lsaturn01 Whitney did not have bad technique what the hell are you talking about?! Whitneys voice declined to smoking cigarettes and also the fact that she toured consistently for 15 years, did movies and soundtracks and singing when she should have been resting. Even Clive Davis said it wasn't that caused the damage he said it was cigarettes. Whitney never said she free based so I don't know where you got that from. There are plenty of vocalist who snort coke and keep their voice
@mariahyohannes
@mariahyohannes 2 года назад
@lsaturn01 You just edited your comment, you're not slick. While your editing your comment go ahead and delete she freebased cocaine because Whitney never said she freebased nor did anyone around her say she did. Cigarettes and over touring is what killed her vocals. Her touring schedule was abuse

She looks stunning here. I think this is her natural hair here just straightened with a flat iron. Smooth voice, smooth skin, smooth hair, phenomenal talent, phenomenal woman.

I only discovered this recently and I keep playing it over and over. Dionne in her prime was simply the best. I love listening and watching her sing when she moves the microphone away when she sings those sustained notes. The orchestra sounds fabulous as well. PERFECTION!

she has a beautiful voice...Seems to run in the family (Whitney Houston is her cousin on her mom's Cissy Houston's side. Stevie wrote a heartfelt song with this. Of course all of his music is great. " Genius" is what he is ❤

At her peak, she was a master vocalist - phrasing, touch, power, tone, dexterity (e.g., Promises,Promises). But almost as often as she recorded some of the greatest songs and made them hers, she wasn't always selecting the best songs consistently. I have several of her albums, and along with the great songs, there's also often a lot of filler. But at her best, she's astonishing. No one like her.

Dionne Warwick is an artist - not a singer, star, celebutant or gossip subject. Compare her with 99% of those heard on radio today and you want to weep at the mediocrity. Female singers "talk" though songs in a 5-note range. It's like evolution in reverse. Incredible arrangement by Alan Peters - perfect for Warwick's unique voice.

It’s the connection with every word for me. I love a vocalist that connects with the lyrics. Singing is so much more than hitting the high note and belting
