Mariah Carey is the definition of an icon/legend. Singer, songwriter, producer, actress, philanthropist, best selling author, etc. She should be a no-brainer
I have nothing but Respect for Dione, She would know, but Mariah is almost up their with her neice Whitney. Mariah is one, did Mariah make her mad lol.
@@pamelaakachicago1408 Yeah. Mariah kinda made her mad. Back in 1990, Walter Afanasieff said of Whitney vs Mariah: "Mariah is a songwriter and producer. Whitney neither writes nor produces. I remember Whitney would come into the studio, memorize whatever was told to her, sing and leave without listening to the final track. Mariah is an artist in the creative sense, and Whitney simply isn't." Dionne replied not by attacking Walter, but she instead attacked Mariah herself-who had never uttered one bitter word against Whitney ever. She said, "If Whitney would have sneezed on her debut album, Mariah would do that too." I have always received hate from Whitney stans for openly supporting Mariah when they disrespect her. Sad because the woman herself didn't disrespect Mariah. But her fans and relatives have always been the worst people...I hate them. They were the ones who ultimately took Whitney's life away as well. Truly evil wretched creatures.
She’s saying an icon is someone who is timeless. She mentioned Ella and Sarah Vaughn - people who started way before even Dionne and are still known today. To her, an icon is someone who will still be known 80yrs from now. I do, however, think MARIAH is one of those people.
Out of all those ladies, Mariah is the oldest and has been on the industry the longest and is the most relevant out of the lot, the fact that they have all mentioned Mariah as an influence as well. The women literally owns the Christmas, she had a 25 year old song go #1 all those years after, she holds the record because of that. People have no idea how hard it is for the older artists nowdays to even chart on the hot 100 because of streaming.
I’ll have to agree with you. Numbers and nostalgia don’t equate to iconic status. It’s being able to endure the test of time and your contribution to your generation and those that follow. Mariah fits the bill, but just barely.
The fact that Mariah's legend status is being questioned in the first place is ridiculous. She has the awards, records, sales, hits, and impact to back that up. She also wrote/co-wrote almost all of her own catalogue despite being one of the best vocalists of all time, something that doesn't come together quite too often, or at least in that level of mastery. She IS a living legend.
@MansaMusa stop playing yourself....the vocal trinity consisted of Whitney Houston, MARIAH CAREY, and Celine Dionne. Not to mention she out sold all the other ladies you mentioned...
@@ReluctantGarbageCollector Celine Dion is a vocal powerhouse but her style seems too different to group with Mariah/Whitney. The closest to Mariah/Whitney would be Christina Aguilera but her 'pop music' image often distracts from the voice.
And...if Mariah isn't an icon then no person outside of MJ, Prince, Beatles can be considered an icon based on actual talent, longevity, hitmaking and influence.

Fun fact, Mariah’s Christmas album alone gives her iconic status. However, that’s only 10% of her catalog. She has hits for days that will be remembered and sung forever. Songs like Hero, Always be my baby, we belong together, one sweet day, emotions etc are forever iconic. Dione doesn’t have half the success & influence Mariah has. The only thing she has on Mariah is age.
That's not all she has.. She has the history of being a pioneer so that singers like Mariah could have a place in the music industry and be know and credited for their work..
I think what many fail to acknowledge or even consider... Dionne Warwick is the 1st, the original, Pop Diva. No female did it before her. And before you run the list: Aretha was soul and gospel Diana was not solo (she was a supreme) Patti was with the Bluebelles and then Labelle Barbara was very much Broadway (along with Liza, Judy and such). Numbers aren’t everything. Natalie Cole definitely hit her for a home run. Few people know that Natalie's hit Now We're Starting Over Again, was actually first sang by Dione Warwick... And Natalie's version has classic hit written all over it... Mariah is known internationally, like whitney aretha and those girls... if I didnt speak 3 languages and had access to the american bs nobody here in morocco, or spain where I grew up, sings or hums a damn dionne warwick tune... yall gasing this old lady up for no reason got her looking all sorts of crazy...
@@moe3691that lady you referring to is the first black female pop star. And her impact is very much relevant people sample her music all the time believe it or not 9 times out of 10 you heard a dionne song
She seems to think it involves people who primarily didn't 'make it' and their names were remembered for generations to come. Mariah's still 'out' now and we don't know if the next generation is going to know her. Many now only know her because of Ariana. Mariah really doesn't get out into the public spotlight as much and people today have a habit of associating publicity with relevancy.
The toni braxton part was hilarious cos she is one of best female r&b icon out there that she still perform like she did on her prime. No shades but yeaaa
Ask random people between 20-60 years old and ask them about Mariah Carey and Dionne Warwick and let's see who is the real icon/legend based on Warwick's definition of the term. 🙄
@@thedivasofsupreme6190 Awards are somewhat part of an icon but not a necessity. Ms. Dionne has many awards and the first for many accolades and stood the test of time that is what makes her legendary and an Icon. Although, Mariah Carey is one as well for me🙂
I agree with the fact that the titles 'legend' & 'icon' are too loosely used when describing the current mediocre pool of artists HOWEVER, everyone he named deserves that title. EVERYONE!
Dionne is still in the solid gold era capsule......How is she going to say I don't know if Mariah is an Icon?>...are you kidding me>??? It might have something to do that we lost Whitney so soon who happens to be her cousin, and was constantly being compared to Mariah. Of the 4 artists mentioned Mariah is the only one known worldwide, that in itself makes you an icon period.
Mariah Carey is an icon, she established a new style of singing. Nobody could replicate her style. She & Whitney each inspired a whole new generation of singers. Mariah & Whitney are THE vocal bible.
Of course, she'll be mad at Mariah for the multiple ways in which Mariah surpassed her cousin. She has also shown that madness at Mariah way back in 1990. Coz no person in the music industry can even part the lips to say that Mariah isn't THE female legend of the industry- give me another female artist who can simultaneously be called "The Voice" and "The Pen". At least she got the songwriting part right, I'll give her that.
😂😂😂 Ha, should of know a hater like you would be. Yet, Mariah doesn’t even have the best selling single or album by a female like Dionnes cousin. Mariah is not the female legend in the industry. I said it and? Mariah isn’t called the voice or the pen. But Dionnes cousin is The Voice that even Mariah said influenced and inspired her. And let’s not forget Dionne’s cousin inspired all of these ladies. 😂😂😂
@@The_Truth- Mariah is more talented than Whitney point blank. She vocally and artistically out classes Whitney. Well vocally she Is more on par with Whitney but artistically Mariah is a music industry G.O.A.T. She is apart of the songwriters hall of fame, which Whitney will never be in history. Unlike Whitney, Mariah had the artistic integrity to perform her own produced material. She was no industry plant depending on covers to shine unlike Whitney's biggest hits💀💀. Why be called The Voice when u can be called the Songbird Supreme. Also why does Mariah still out sell Whitney even though Whitney holds those records🤣🤣. Maybe because Mariah can actually write 18 number one hits and still sing into her 50s. Stay pressed as the dusty nails in Whitney's disintegrated coffin and Ms Warwick's career.
@@kitpaul3929 How can Mariah outclass Whitney when Whitney eclipsed her live in front of the entire world at the Oscars. Had Mariah’s face shook👀👀👀👀👀. Whitney is way better live singer than her. That’s where it really counts, she didn’t need dub tracks, backup singers, whole choirs at any of her concerts, event performances. Let’s not even start with the dedicated videos of lip syncing Mariah has done. All that material Mariah has put out yet Whitney has the best selling album and single by a female artist😂😂😂. Mariah put out almost double the material, yet Whitney almost outsold her with less. Plus, Mariah said out her own mouth that Whitney influenced and inspired her which both know she did. Whitney laid out the blueprint for singers to follow her footsteps if you want to be a world class singer. Mariah being put in the songwriters hall of fame is nice and good for her. However Whitney is known for her voice not writing and is already in the rock and roll hall of fame. Mariah has been a hit or miss live since her debut, the streets were talking and so were the critics. It’s a good thing Mariah can write her music because being a hit or miss live like that she isn’t even eclipsing the moon🤣🤣🤣🤣. They both were nominated in the same category and Whitney cleaned house. Why would someone want to be a songbird supreme when you are The Voice, there are other songbirds, but there is only one The Voice. Remember they both sung true star spangled banner, one made history, the other no one remembers🤣🤣🤣. That’s GOAT and when 9/11 happened they play Whitney’s version, not Mariahs 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Next case.
@@The_Truth- Whitney is not better than Mariah vocally, Mariah best her ..Artistically they are not even comparable..Whitney's vocal technique was limited , she had no technique on whistle, neither on falsetto, her singing range wasnt even near to encompass all the singing technique ranges unlike Mariah lol how come the greatest singer ever could be a complete stranger to whistling ? To low register vocals ? To growling ? A high belter ? Lol the actual greatest singer of all time ( Mariah) is the one who can be in vocal comparisons with any other mainstream singer at every vocal technique, and being the best at most of them or among the bests. Whitney was only a mid belter, she was never a high belter .Her last comfortable notes were Eb5/ E5 even on her prime. This is why you coulnt provide me even one Whitney's performance of I'm Every Woman with live climax, as every performance of the song had pre-recorded vocals instead or dodged with adlibs pretending to change the song artistically lol Whitney couldnt give I'm Your Baby Tonight justice as it was in the recorded studio version live neither .Cause after Eb5/ E5, she was always constricted with lot of tension and unproper technique + lack of resonance.
@@The_Truth- As for the Oscar performance, Belting louder never meant singing better. For that case you will need some knowledge about singing , which your clearly don't have.
Mariah can sing, write, and produce music. She isn't just a singer, she is a complete package 👑 Sad to hear others bringing down a woman who has worked hard to be where she is.
Girl friend is time for you to lay down.. and give it some good thought cause Mariah is what???? Legendary!!! icon for sure one of the greatest voices of all times alongside Whitney she was the 90's generation voice and influenced many with her undoubted talent.
Nobody’s flocking to see either Mariah or Toni as much as I love these two. Dionne has a strong fan base and has toured the planet numerous times. Her songs are classics she has been out since the fifties
@@erolynbarnes6654 Dionne who girl shut up, no one knows who Dionne is, Mariah is the greatest vocalist of all time and best selling female artist of all time
@@Fan-vv8wb Mariah is one of them you still have Whitney Madonna Janet and Celine who are record holders for best selling female artists of all time. In fact Dionne has sold over 100 million records. I blame your age for not knowing the facts.
I think her definition of iconic is different. I honestly think many of her contemporaries would say the same. Keep in mind, she along with Aretha, Diana etc pioneered and created the blue prints
You’re completely right! Aretha was notorious for saying similar things. People have to realize it’s hard for artists who have been around for 50 and 60 years to see an artists with a 15-20 career in the same light as they see their idea of what icons are. Dionne is using Sarah, Ella and the likes the standard so of course Mariah, Brandy and Toni wouldn’t fit that mold.
@Layla Alexander why you’re so butt hurt over this woman’s opinion is beyond me. Whether she acknowledges Mariah or anyone doesn’t negate the fact that Dion is still an icon, so get over it. The fact you’re putting so much stock on her word is a testament to just that. There are far more important things happening in this world to lose sleep over... Mariah’s legacy ain’t one of them.
@John Moses Why wouldn't Mariah Carey fit the mold? She has been in the business 30 years and has accomplished more than most can even dream of. She has influenced a generation of singers just off her first single in 1990 alone. She has No.1 albums. No1 singles. Countless awards. She has broken records. Set records. Popularized the pop/rap collabo that has become a mainstay in music today. Singers also try to duplicate her signature whistle. They try to duplicate her Christmas success. She is a prolific songwriter named to the Songwriters Hall of Fame which few female artists achieve. She's a best selling author. Achieved her 19th No.1 29 years into her career. She had one of the biggest comebacks in music after the disaster that was Glitter. But Mariah Carey doesn't fit the mold? Mariah has made an incredible impact in music. You cant get more iconic than that. I wish people would just do their research. It's not that hard.
WHEN WHITNEY , MARIAH, AND TONI WEARING GOWNS.......... MARY CAME IN THE GAME WITH COMBAT BOOTS AND JERSEY'S \. EVERY ROUND AWAY GIRL WAY WANTED TO BE MARY. THATS WHAT I CALLED A ICON. MARY DIDNT CHANGE FOR NOBODY......MARY CHANGED THE GAME WHEN SHE STEP ON THE SCENE, SHE HAD A GENERATION OF WOMEN WANTED TO BE HER. NO OTHER ARTIST CAN SAY THAT.........EVER!!!!!!!
What???? No. Dionne!!! You are breaking my heart😩😆. I LOVE YOU. You know this. But, MARIAH CAREY IS THE DEFINITION OF AN ICON. Look at what’s she’s accomplished in the music industry. How many doors she’s opened. Records she broke and set. Generations of new females vocalist she inspired. How can she not? I don’t think she meant that guys. 💯🙏🏾🙌🏿.
I find it hard to believe she doesn't know mariah that well when Mariah and her Niece, miss Whitney Elizabeth Houston had a huge song together with "When you Believe" and if that wasn't enough Mariah has timeless gigantic hits. Just "All I want for Christmas" alone, without the rest of her discography, is enough to put Mariah in the pantheon of enduring icons. This was weird from Dionne. Very weird answers.
Very shocking of her saying that. She basically said she wasn’t sure because she doesn’t know her that well. That definitely was not a valid answer in my opinion.
@@thedivasofsupreme6190 I believe she meant to say she doesn't know Mariah personally but that's not even a valid criterion lol. Who cares if you know someone personally or not to decide if they're an icon/legend, especially if that someone is already established with success, impact, and longevity? Anyone on this planet in their right mind would know Mariah is a legend or else you wouldn't hear her 26-year-old christmas song on retail stores again and again lmao
A true icon to me not only has great music/ hits BUT you have a personal story with lessons learned. You have some longevity. I think all four ladies are icons. By 1994 they all had albums/singles on the charts at the same time.
I’ve always felt like the older generation or people in general don’t like to make way for newly established icons like the list isn’t always just going to be Micheal Jackson, Whitney Houston, Prince etc Mariah and Mary are ICONS without doubt their contribution to music was and still is impactful we have to celebrate and acknowledge the talent and history now because it seems like nowadays it’s only when an artist dies we give them their flowers.
