Not only that, but given the murderer's diplomatic immunity, Columbo had to have consulted with the California District Attorney so they could prepare the confession for him to sign on short notice so that the murderer's confession and waiver of his rights would stand up in court. One of the beautiful things about writing a Columbo episode is that Columbo does a hella-of-a-lotta "leg work" that we never actually see and only learn about and understand by context after the fact.

Sometimes he is working simultaneously on more than one case at a time. In one episode with Robert Culp as the murderer, Columbo mentions to another police officer he was up late I think it was, working on the "Hayward case", a reference to the case where Jackie Cooper played the senatorial candidate who murders his bodyguard.

There was a similar type ending in another Columbo episode not to do with diplomatic immunity. In one of the later 90's episodes the killer kills a mob bookie and claims self-defence. So the mob boss who employed the bookie gives Columbo a choice, he will accept Columbo's justice in the courts but if the killer goes free he is going to send his own hit men after him to do the job. That forces the killer to confess.

One of the finer points of diplomatic immunity - the diplomat cannot himself renounce his diplomatic immunity, only his country's government can do that. Generally though - the diplomat would become persona non grata and be required to immediately leave. We didn't see it here - but the King could revoke his immunity, so maybe that is what happened.

Sometimes you just have to admit that you opened your mouth in a vain attempt to look important and knowledgeable when in fact, you are neither. How is this title still up here? He did not walk free because of diplomatic immunity. He signed a confession admitting to the murder so his conviction is guaranteed. But if during his trial he decides to repudiate that confession and hire a top lawyer, he will be sent back to his own country where his conviction for the murder is a foregone conclusion.

The title is misleading, he didn't walk free due to diplomatic immunity. This is like a "Hobson's Choice" episode. He could face to US justice system for the murder, but if he was somehow allowed to go free because he had a great lawyer, the Suarian king who appointed him in the first place would recall him home to stand trial for the murder he overhead him admitting to Columbo. Suppose he took that to a US court claiming the king was lying, who would they believe, him or the king?
