After keeping tarantulas for years, I finally took the plunge and got my first curtain web spider a few years ago. And, you know what? I LOVE them. In this video, I'll talk about my experiences so far with 5 different Dipluridae or Curtain Web Spiders!

I got into keeping tarantulas to cure my arachnophobia and it worked....to a degree. However, these are beyond my humble capabilities. Fascinating, beautiful and spectacular no doubt, and I never knew they could attain such a size, but they also terrify me. And I thought pokies were fast!😱

Yup, I totally get it. Even after I was over being afraid of tarantulas, these guys continued to creep me out for a while! :)

We have had several funnel species. None lived more than 3 years. Trying again with a sericata and today we got a D. Sanguinea. Never bothered with a waterdish after the first one. It just got webbed over and completely disappeared! I love these spiders. This my be my favorite video. I loved the feeding footage. Cheers!

They really are gorgeous and not so difficult to keep as people might think. Maybe, the most common mistake is to keep them to dry? Both "sericata" and "fallax" are gorgeous spiders that have an interesting development in colors. Very beautiful and interesting spiders that somehow have a misleading rumor to be "dangerous".

I agree, Ken! Those who I've heard having trouble are usually keeping them on the dry side. They are such awesome spiders!

Hey Tom! Long time no comment. But these are my absolute favorites! One thing I love to use with these guys is Vine branches I pull out of a chain link fence next to a river here in West Texas. Not sure if it's trumpet vine or what, but it's really pretty when you shuck the bark off. I'll lean some in their enclosure and they'll use the loops and bends to make web tunnels that look amazing. Just wanted to share that 😁 wish I could show you a pic

These guys remind me of American grass spiders (Agelenopsis). They live similar lifestyles and display similar behaviors to these, but they’re considerably smaller and are true spiders as opposed to Mygalomorphs. I kept a couple grass spiders in the past and it was a blast, especially around feeding time. Whenever I have the knowledge, time and resources, I hope to get a couple of these in the future. Sounds like a rewarding experience.

Hi Tom, great video and on point. They are fantastic spiders, and as I said in a other comment, my experience with these spiders is, that they are very shy, no defensive behavior, no bites, they will be about 3-5 + years old, with luck a bit more, but not as old as tarantulas or trapdoor spiders. They like it a bit moist and warm and in a big setup, they like high growing real plants and some wood for the webbing. They are not difficult to keep, but this is only my opinion. Wonderful spiders. Beautiful footage of your dipluridae spiders! Love to see them hunt! And as I said, I can recommend you the Euagrus Genus, they are like little dipluridae but a little bit clumsy and also not defensive, with strong webbings. Have a great week and stay save Greetings Chris 🤘

I had a linothele sericata (ex megatheloides) sling. I had it for a month and kept it inside a box for feeders. I kept it humid and fed it 3 times a week. It molted ones and after 5 days, I found it dead. It didn't show any signs of diseases. I kept it inside a huge Terrarium (I had several enclosures inside from spiders with similar needs of Temperature and humidity) and it was the only one that died.

@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders Год назад
I'm so glad, Anabel! That's awesome that she's doing so well. Yeah, they definitely ARE fast, but the speed really doesn't come into play in a stressful way. Just ordered a linothele sericata that's about 1-2inches, the only important piece of information I'm not finding is do I wait for it to start making a web before offering food?

@TomsBigSpiders 6 месяцев назад
Hey, Mike! That's awesome! And that's a great question. If you give them a hide and plenty of anchor points, they will usually do a bit of webbing over night. Mine all ate at that point.

@@TomsBigSpiders that's what I was thinking since it's small and it's still small enough to be offered disabled prey anyway

Hey Tom, do you do a lot of pairing ?
@TomsBigSpiders
@TomsBigSpiders Год назад
I do not. Unfortunately, with the podcast and RU-vid videos (and a family and full time job), I just don't have the time. When I stop doing the RU-vid stuff, I will likely focuse on more breeding.

@@TomsBigSpiders ok I have a mature male t apotheosis, figured I’d put the offer up. I don’t have any intention on attempting a pairing but would be happy to send him out.

Not sure if this was asked already, but wondering if they have crappy vision like tarantulas?? Lol

Hey, Natalie! That's a great question, and I'm honestly not sure! The seem to detect movement on their webbing to find prey, so I would guess that they wouldn't need great vision (as apposed to huntman or wandering spiders that spot it). I'll have to do some research!

Totally off-topic, but I really have to get your response to the most recent Dave's Little Beasties pairing video (Neoholothele incei ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bpwd8W9XS0c.html at about 17:15) where right in the middle of sexy time the female decides she needs a drink from her water bowl. Hilarious. Things were going along fine and she just veers off to the side and right into her water dish. I think that might be a first on camera.

The word True spider is in my opinion pretty dumb. They all goes under the category spiders, they all got 8 legs. But ive thought of some of them myself, but took some OBTs instead. These spiders was quite expensive.

Well, it's just the layman's way of differentiating the primitive species from the more evolved, shorter lived ones. Good point, though.
