Every time I hear this song, I think about my fellow brothers and sisters in my volunteer emergency services community worldwide. We didn't have to do it, but we chose to stand up and sign those papers knowing we will risk our lives to protect and save others any time there is a call. Our mentality of having to "go out, but not guaranteed to come back" is always with us. This song is about the tragedy of warfare and the stupidity of mankind, obviously. However, the mission of responding to dangerous and hazardous situations will hit all military and emergency services personnel sooner or later. We are all a band of brothers for that.

I think I speak for every veteran, soldier or reservist: this song will not leave any of us dry-eyed... War is bad and must be avoided. But, and this is my personal opinion now, when a country is invaded it has every right in the world to defend itself and ask for help and all countries in the world have a moral duty to help that country in some way! None of us want to go to war but we know that unfortunately sometimes it is necessary to protect the freedom of those who cannot defend themselves.

Such a hauntingly beautifully sad song. Marks soft, subtle delivery belies the trauma and sorrow of a dying soldier, but not so much that it cannot move anyone to tears. I think on a world stage it is slightly under-rated as an anti-war song, but I think that goes with what you said about the song mid-point, it doesn't need to be in your face, it doesn't need to be shouted. Hello from Switzerland, since I heard the song for the first time in 1985/1986, it has been one of the songs I keep hearing (it's on my playlist for a long time, of course). Along with "Telegraph Road" one of Dire Straits' most outstanding songs. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing, in a way similar to David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), emphasizing the song in places, underlining the text or addressing the emotional level. A peace song from my understanding, as meaningful and deep as "Imagine" (John Lennon), both songs will stand the test of time and will probably not lose their meaning for a long time. Of course, as a veteran soldier, the song title has a special meaning, because nobody is closer to you in such times than the "brother" with the gun next to you, who stands by you when the worst comes to the worst. I usually prefer live recordings, but sometimes, like this song in particular, with the black and white smearing, it fits the song like nothing else.

This song will always remind me of an episode of 'Our Tune' which was introduced by Simon Bates on Radio 1 I can't remember the year, but a Woman had written in to the Show to explain the loss of her Husband in a War (at that time) leaving her and her Children on their own. Simon Bates told the Story to the listening audience, with his usual heart felt description, then he introduced this song that the Woman had chosen as 'Our Tune'........It simply had me in pieces listening to it. I hope today that this Woman and her Children are much happier.

One of the best and most haunting rock songs ever created. An incredible message and delivery. Starting with the sound of distant artillery, this lament is aimed against all wars, but particularly those caused by aggression and greed. This song is meant to get us emotional and thinking about why. Why do we allow ourselves to be fools; manipulated over and over? Nationalism, like religion, has caused so much pain, death, and suffering. And for nothing.

He never sings loud, and he is a story teller so he basically speaks the words. You should react to Dire Straits playing Sultans of Swing and Telegraph Road both from the 1983 Alchemy Live concert. This song and Disturbeds version of Sound of Silence should both be listened to as they both have a similar powerful presence though quite different but they both talk about humanity and the sadness of the world. This song has been known to make many grown men cry. Im 57 and i still do. Theyre absolutely great at their art and they know how to use their tools of the trade, guitar doesnt need to be loud, it tells a story with each note, his voice is more poweful telling the message than if he just sang louder. They are gods of their art and know exactly what to do to bring out your emotions, happy or sad.

When Mark Knopfler picks up a guitar, you KNOW you're in for a treat! This is one of my favourite songs of Dire Straits.

Again, I'm new to your channel, so I don't know if anyone else has said this: Knopfler is one of the only rock guitarists who doesn't play with a pick..really ever. He plays his chords and melodies entirely with his fingers on his right hand, which makes his tone unique.

Wish you was a child of the early 90, So much good music in tv series. To me watching this on Miami Vice in the 90's was so amazing. Love the reaction.

I was only 11 or 12 when this song came out and even at that tender age this song was inctedibly moving to me.
