I've never been a big fan of music videos, but this one has always been my favorite. Great band, many, many great songs to enjoy. A truly unique voice and guitarist is Mark Knopfler.

This song is written from the perspective of a dying soldier reflecting on not going home, his wounding, and saying goodbye...key lines are we have one world and we are fools to make war on our brothers in arm....

One of my favourite bands for 50 years. Mark Knoffler the lead guitarist and singer also released solo Abums. One of which was called, Sailing to Philadelphia, omg what a great album, please check it out, you won't but be disappointed.

Can't believe you'd never heard of this classic British band

You guys said that you haven't heard Mark Knopfler before, but being Scousers I'd be willing to bet you love your football, in which case you've heard him every time Newcastle United run onto the pitch at St James's Park. They take the field to 'Going Home' the theme to a film called Local Hero. (Having been raised in Newcastle, he is himself a local hero.) Knopfler composed the soundtrack and plays guitar on it. If you've ever seen The Princess Bride movie then you'll have heard him play on that too because he composed the soundtrack to that one as well. As for his work with Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms remains one of the biggest selling UK albums of all time and had the distinction of being the first album to sell a million copies on CD. Money for Nothing from the album was used to launch MTV Europe, featuring as it does the refrain 'I want my MTV'.

there are a few videos of this song with pictures and film sequences from the Falklands War, and you will immediately understand what it is about, the Falklands War, that's why dire straits wrote this song because of this war, what a pity you don’t know that Greetings from Germany

I love this song too. I have seen Dire Straits in concert, and they were great. Mark's vocal on this is so understated. But the lyrics are really profound.

Your comments on this video are intriguing. On one level, you really seem to appreciate the visuals, but also seem to miss the meaning and the emotion of the song. I feel that you put more emphasis on the kudos of how famous he is than how good the song is. It’s disappointing to be honest. This is a song about the futility of war as much as the fraternity of comrades.

The ultimate dire straits video is the Alchemy Live Sultans of Swing. One of the top ten rock moments of all time, IMHO. MK is also one of the top 10 guitarists of all time as well.

Thank you for reacting to this fine song from Dire Straits. The album that this is from has other great songs in a similar vein. You really can't go wrong with anything by them, or by their lead guitarist/singer/songwriter, Mark Knopfler. He has done, and continues to do, some wonderful work as a solo artist. He is a brilliant storyteller, and one of the greatest guitar players in rock history. Yes, he is British, but not your ordinary British man. He's a northerner who grew up in Newcastle. His mother was Scottish, and his father was a Hungarian Jew who fortunately escaped from the Nazis during the era of the holocaust. This contributes a lot, I think, to his sensibilities. He also has an affinity for the Irish, & has written songs that reflect that. One is called Irish Boy. A couple of my favorites from him are Piper To The End, and Fare Thee Well Northumberland. He has composed scores for a few movies, too, such as Cal, The Princess Bride, and my favorite, Local Hero. I think you would like that one, too, if you can get your hands on the DVD. Only one piece on the soundtrack is a song, sung by Gerry Rafferty, called That's The Way It Always Starts. I think you would enjoy delving deeper into his songs, even if you don't do them as reactions. By the way, they played at the Live Aid concert at Wembley in 1985. They were on just before Queen, luckily, because Queen sort of stole the show, and other bands weren't very happy to have to follow them. But Dire Straits did a great job, too, with Sultans of Swing and Money For Nothing.

Very significant band. Okay, so I wanted to BE Mark Knopfler for a while. The he lost his hair and I backed right off. But Dire Straits is Top Five band with me. Doobies, Santana, Creedence, Steely Dan and Dire Straits - all in whoever is playing at the time. You're not ready for Creedence yet. I'll tell you when. (And if the government kicks down some bucks, I consider staying sane with entertainment a "necessary expense".
