"Dire Straits" was a British rock band formed in London in 1977 by Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, John Illsley, and Pick Withers. The band was active from 1977 to 1988 and again from 1990 to 1995.
Dire Straits' debut single, "Sultans of Swing," from their self-titled 1978 album, was a top ten hit in the UK and US. They followed it with several other hit singles, including "Romeo and Juliet" (1981), "Private Investigations" (1982), "Twisting by the Pool" (1983), "Money for Nothing" (1985), and "Walk of Life" (1985). Their most successful album, "Brothers in Arms" (1985), has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. This album was the first to sell a million copies on CD and is the eighth best-selling album in UK history. Dire Straits has spent over 1,100 weeks on the UK Albums Chart and is the fifth most to date as per the Guinness Book of British Hit Albums.
Dire Straits had a diverse range of influences, such as country, folk, J.J. Cale's blues rock, and jazz. Their simple sound contrasted with punk rock and showed a roots rock influence from pub rock. The band had lineup changes over the years, but Mark Knopfler and Illsley were the only consistent members. After breaking up in 1988, Knopfler said, "A lot of press reports were saying we were the biggest band in the world. There's not an accent then on the music, there's an accent on popularity. I needed a rest." They disbanded for good in 1995, and Knopfler pursued a solo career, declining any reunion offers.
Dire Straits, the biggest British rock band of the 80s according to Classic Rock magazine, had two world tours from 1985 to 1986 and from 1991 to 1992. They won several awards, including four Grammy Awards, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Dire Straits has sold over 100 million records worldwide.
